I really enjoyed this and had to wait until lots of family came and went for my sons birthday to finish but I'm glad I waited as I didn't want to be distracted. I'm really enjoying these books but to me Katniss seems quite self centered in this one at times. She doesn't seem to be able to see the whole picture or notice the small signs.

20% - (view spoiler)[Yikes. Shit is getting real. I really felt for them when they visited District 11 and Katniss saw them executing the man who supported her in the crowd. It really isn't looking good for them.

I'm confused by the whole love triangle though. Because Katniss says she doesn't love Peeta and it's all an act to stay safe, but she was enjoying holding his hand, and the holding each other in bed, I think something real is blossoming. I just don't see Gale as a potential love interest just yet, but who knows.. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[Unknowingly, Gale's whipping was the catalyst that would be the downfall of the capitol, as it gave both him and Katniss the fire needed to stay united and to fight.

I'm surprised how long it took, in both this book and the first one, for the actual hunger games to begin. A lot of the initial scenes are spent building up the characters' relationships and introducing the reader to the culture and horror of the districts. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[I'm glad we got to see Haymitch's Hunger Games as I have been curious how he won. His arrogance wasn't becoming but I respected his actions in the games. I agree with Katniss though, watching it did feel wrong. It was like peering into someone's minds and seeing their worst memories without their consent.

It was interesting to get to know the previous victors. They are largely fuelled by anger and arrogance and lack many of the vulnerabilities of the younger victors. Finnick is a little shit and I love him! (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Peeta's revealing Katniss 'pregnancy' was such a great bombshell, and was the catalyst needed to make the people of the capitol riot. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough.

I was so surprised that the hunger games didn't even begin until the final quarter of this book! They are the most memorable parts of the books, for me, yet take up a comparatively small page count. The concept of a clock for an arena was a clever one and it takes the victors, bar one, a long time to figure this out. Just like Katniss, Mags, Nuts, and Bolts are my favourites...along with my soft spot for Finnick. (hide spoiler)]
