Public domain means that there is no copyright. Many works of classic literature are public domain because they're so old.

Google Books would be an excellent resource. Basically any classic literature you can find a free e-book of would be public domain.

Does anybody know of any good public domain works (novels from the 1800s) out there?
I'm almost done with Through the Looking Glass, so I wanted to get a list ready.
Thanks,

Project Gutenberg has millions of public domain books available in multiple formats:

Another trick is to search by author. While not every title will be free, there are lots of classic titles offered from authors such as Mark Twain, Edith Wharton, Jane Austen, the Bronte Sisters, Zane Grey, Henry James, Bram Stoker, Shakespeare and many more… all for free or dirt cheap!
Please see the attached links that explain in detail how to access public domain books. Also, check out Open Library and Project Gutenberg.
Sorry this isn’t the book list for which you asked, but hopefully, you’ll find titles you’ll enjoy!
Happy Reading!
