Shirley | 3 comments First Night of Summer by Landon Parham
WOW, WOW, WOW. A dark, gritty and emotional tale of secrets, family, love, loss and evil. I absolutely loved this book from a debut author. Not for the faint of heart. I highly recommend for a group read. There is much to discuss!! This author researches bold, taboo topics and raises awareness for them through reading fiction. A must read, that will tug hard on your heartstrings. It is disturbing in parts but does not get too graphic despite what other reviewers are saying. People are just too squeamish and can take anything these days. Warning:It is known to make grown men cry.
First Night of Summer

Amazing - but I love Khaled Hosseini. If you liked his others I would say you would like this. It depends on what kind of books you like, but this comes from a very reputable author who has yet to disappoint.

Beth | 5 comments My 2013 reads are:
The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout Inferno (Robert Langdon, #4) by Dan Brown Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls by David Sedaris

I've kind of gone back and read a lot of older books this year. Especially some of the first books in series that have been around for some time. I have a couple of 2013's on hold through the library now that they have become available as ebooks. I am looking forward to The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) by Robert Galbraith and The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

Howz the gaiman book..??

message 64: by ally ¯\(ツ)/¯ (new)

ally ¯\(ツ)/¯ (allykennedy) | 1002 comments @Aswin - I loved it! Definitely one of my favorite books that I've read this year. This was the first Gaiman book I've ever picked up. Immediately after I read Coraline (never seen the movie) it was fantastic as well. I now have 3 more of his books in my "To Read" pile.

Aswin - As for any books, there are those who love them and those who don't. I did not really care for the Gaiman book. It's very much fantasy, so much so, that I wondered if it might be for a child. But then I thought it too ickie for a child. So, this is a tough one to call for you. I didn't care for "Gone Girl" either, which might help you decide or clue you in.

message 69: by Lorrie (new)

Lorrie (lorrier) Angela - How did you like "Inferno"? I've read all of his other books, "Angels and Demons" being my favorite. I haven't got to "Inferno" yet.

message 70: by Anima (new)

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments I read Inferno in July and I must say it disappointed me, if you read his other books, there is no surprise in this one, and I found it not only unoriginal, but also not very well-written, there were many repetitions and the action was dragging in parts. I didn't like it. Most probably the film would be much better.

message 71: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Lorrie ,
I somewhat agree with Anima, although I would give it 3 and 1/2 stars. It just was not as thrilling as The Da Vinci Code for me. These books seem to be a bit predictable - major world crisis and Robert Langdon saves the day. I think it will make for a good movie . I went to Italy several years ago and I have to admit that the descriptions of Florence and Venice made me want to go back . That's why the 3 1/2 stars .

message 88: by Patty (new)

Patty W Warren | 4 comments I became acquainted with Diane Chamberlain's writing when my book club read, "The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes." I enjoyed that book so much that I decided to explore some of her other books. I love to read North Carolina authors and Southern lit. Diane Chamberlain has written some southern-based books with realistic characters and North Carolina locations I know.
"Necessary Lies" touches on the poverty of rural North Carolina that still exists in some places today and our infamous Eugenics program. It's hard to believe that this program was ever started but it did exist. The struggling characters of Ivy and Jane bring this program and the juxtaposition of poverty and wealth to the forefront in this book. These characters also show the growing realization during this time in our history that women want to make their own decisions.
Of course, even today we are still having some of these battles. es, this book has a lot of layers, but do not think it is preachy or dull. It has been a pleasure to read. Sometimes it reads like a thriller and all of the time it reads well. Diane Chamberlain has written another best seller that should not be missed!
