WOW, WOW, WOW. A dark, gritty and emotional tale of secrets, family, love, loss and evil. I absolutely loved this book from a debut author. Not for the faint of heart. I highly recommend for a group read. There is much to discuss!! This author researches bold, taboo topics and raises awareness for them through reading fiction. A must read, that will tug hard on your heartstrings. It is disturbing in parts but does not get too graphic despite what other reviewers are saying. People are just too squeamish and can take anything these days. Warning:It is known to make grown men cry.
First Night of Summer

My 2013 reads are:
I've kind of gone back and read a lot of older books this year. Especially some of the first books in series that have been around for some time. I have a couple of 2013's on hold through the library now that they have become available as ebooks. I am looking forward to
and
@Aswin - I loved it! Definitely one of my favorite books that I've read this year. This was the first Gaiman book I've ever picked up. Immediately after I read Coraline (never seen the movie) it was fantastic as well. I now have 3 more of his books in my "To Read" pile.
Aswin wrote: "Ally wrote: "Read books released in 2013 (so far)

[bookcover:Cryonic: A Zombie Novel|1581110..."Aswin - As for any books, there are those who love them and those who don't. I did not really care for the Gaiman book. It's very much fantasy, so much so, that I wondered if it might be for a child. But then I thought it too ickie for a child. So, this is a tough one to call for you. I didn't care for "Gone Girl" either, which might help you decide or clue you in.
Since my list from last month, I have read these additional 2013 releases>Inferno
Enon
We Need New Names
Necessary Lies
Someone: A Novel
Songs of Willow Frost
A Tale for the Time Being
Angela - How did you like "Inferno"? I've read all of his other books, "Angels and Demons" being my favorite. I haven't got to "Inferno" yet.
I read Inferno in July and I must say it disappointed me, if you read his other books, there is no surprise in this one, and I found it not only unoriginal, but also not very well-written, there were many repetitions and the action was dragging in parts. I didn't like it. Most probably the film would be much better.
Lorrie ,I somewhat agree with Anima, although I would give it 3 and 1/2 stars. It just was not as thrilling as The Da Vinci Code for me. These books seem to be a bit predictable - major world crisis and Robert Langdon saves the day. I think it will make for a good movie . I went to Italy several years ago and I have to admit that the descriptions of Florence and Venice made me want to go back . That's why the 3 1/2 stars .
My 2013 reads areGone Girl
Best Kept Secret
Forged in Blood I
Forged in Blood II
The Oath of the Vayuputras

Ok, that did it!! I'm going to read it just for the ITALY parts. We're going in December! Thanks, Angela.
TamElaine ,I also loved Me Before You and you already know I loved Necessary Lies! The Rosie Project is on my kindle - will be doing a buddy read later this month . Looking forward to it .
I became acquainted with Diane Chamberlain's writing when my book club read, "The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes." I enjoyed that book so much that I decided to explore some of her other books. I love to read North Carolina authors and Southern lit. Diane Chamberlain has written some southern-based books with realistic characters and North Carolina locations I know. "Necessary Lies" touches on the poverty of rural North Carolina that still exists in some places today and our infamous Eugenics program. It's hard to believe that this program was ever started but it did exist. The struggling characters of Ivy and Jane bring this program and the juxtaposition of poverty and wealth to the forefront in this book. These characters also show the growing realization during this time in our history that women want to make their own decisions.
Of course, even today we are still having some of these battles. es, this book has a lot of layers, but do not think it is preachy or dull. It has been a pleasure to read. Sometimes it reads like a thriller and all of the time it reads well. Diane Chamberlain has written another best seller that should not be missed!
Patty,I couldn't agree more about Necessary Lies. This was my first Diane Chamberlain book and Ioved it . It was five stars for me . I plan to read more of her books for sure. Great review!
I've recently read the latest Louise Penny book How the Light Gets In - it's wonderful! I've also read Life After Life by Kate Atkinson and The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith and the latest Flavia deLuce Speaking from Among the Bones by Alan Bradley. All well worth reading.
2013 books I've readThe 5th Wave
Happenstance
Resplendent
The Longest Ride
The Never List
The Twelve (published Oct 2012)
The Cuckoo's Calling
Him
And I'm going to start reading The World of Divergent: The Path to Allegiant
I recently read a new 2013 release called Somewhere Upriver
and thought it was a fun read, written well, with some quirky characters.
Read The Oath of the Vayuputras by Amish Tripathi, Inferno by Dan Brown, The Silent Wife by A.S.A. Harrison & The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
I have read The Racketeer, Trail of Dead, Every Day is an Atheist Holiday,Annabel and Dad Is Fat off the 2013 list. I read a lot of books, just not that many that were published in 2013. I plan on reading: Requiem & Allegiant by the end of the year!
I am also hoping to read more books in 2014 especially new releases!
