Thread is here, Crystal, under author's last name. Poll is here.

message 66: by Sandra (new) - added it

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) | 19 comments I'll try book 1. What is the start date? Are we taking 2 months to read each book, since it's a year long challenge and there are 5 books listed? Haven't more been written?

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments Sandra wrote: "I'll try book 1. What is the start date? Are we taking 2 months to read each book, since it's a year long challenge and there are 5 books listed? Haven't more been written?"

We're still voting on the start date, the poll is here.

I was thinking 1 month per book, but maybe we'll see how the first one goes and if a lot of us find that 2 months would be better we can spread it out more?

Speaking of the poll, it is really close. There are 27 votes for 12/2 and 23 votes for 23/30. Since the poll closes tomorrow and it looks like it will probably come down to one of those two dates, people may want to consider switching their votes to one of those dates.

message 68: by Sandra (new) - added it

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) | 19 comments I hope it's 12/30, bc I've already committed to other books for Dec, lol!

Celeste (pinkbear) | 53 comments I'm joining in I've had the first book for a while just never picked it up...now I have the motivation to read it

Tonya | 256 comments I am planning on reading, please add me to the list. I originally read this years and years ago (as in my husband bought it new and I picked it up to read while nursing my now 17 year old son).

Scarlett | 12 comments I'm in!

Justin (rockstarintraining) I'm in! I've started and stopped Book 1 a couple of times. This should help keep me motivated.

Barbara (worthwhilereading) I have read all five and they are some of the best books I have ever read! GRR Martin can't write them fast enough for me. I have truly been at a loss as to what to read next since finishing the 5th installment. Nothing is good enough now ;(
I am in a reading slump. If anyone can suggest an epic that is as intriguing and edgy as GoT please let me know!
I have also watched the HBO series to date and what a great job done by the filming crew!! It would be no easy feat to bring those novels to life on screen and to make it believable. Well done!
I will keep abreast of this discussion thread as you all read through the series.
Enjoy and remember, "Winter is Coming"

Hi Barbara! I haven't read the ASOIAF series yet so I don't know what exactly to compare it to, but here are a few epic fantasy recommendations:
The Blade Itself by by Joe Abercrombie
The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson

Erin (ecardwell) I'm in for this! I read the first one but have been dragging my feet for the rest

Thanks Amanda!
I have tried to get into The Lies of Locke Lamora but it wasn't my cup of tea. I have The Name of the Wind and will give it a try.
Enjoy the rest of the Martin's series!

I haven't read them yet but I hear great things about the Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind and the Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan. More series that I need to get around to reading as they are all on my shelves :-P

Renee (reneeconoulty) | 3309 comments Ok, I think I can coordinate all the books I want to read and fit this in too. I read the first one before the tv series came out but never got around to the rest. Now, what to read for the next 2 days before this starts...

message 79: by Sandra (new) - added it

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) | 19 comments I'm in, but don't know whether to read it (faster) or listen to it on Audible!

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments I read the first Sword of Truth and it was great! They're just really long! :p

Justin (rockstarintraining) The series was 50% off yesterday at Barnes and Noble for the box sets. You can also stack their current 30% off coupon on top of that. I got the first four books for about $15 total. Not sure if they're still on sale, but it's a pretty awesome deal.

Justin (rockstarintraining) Since other books and series have bee mentioned, I should probably clarify the deal is on the ASOIAF series.

Jasmine | 2 comments I'm in, though I have to catch up since I forgot it started yesterday.

Mirliz | 373 comments I really need to start reading more, and I've been wanting to read this series for a while. So I'll join you, however I have to get my hands on the book first before I can catch up.

message 85: by Patty (new) - added it

Patty (plv77) | 45 comments Didn't see my name on the list but I'm in :) post 54

Becca (nymeria8) Oh please take on this challenge! I read all 5 books in 3 months. I am desperately awaiting book 6.

I haven't loved a series this much since Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit!

This series is so good it will barely feel like a challenge.

Warning: expect the unexpected!

Enjoy!

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 3473 comments I'm a book behind. Haven't read beyond the second book yet. I can't wait to read it, it's just that I've had too much going on and too many library books due soon.

Renee (reneeconoulty) | 3309 comments All done.
Kept up (mostly) with the buddy reads and read one book per month. Looking forward to the next one when it comes out. I'm glad I read them as buddy reads because it made me stop and think about what I'd read every few chapters. I think i would have missed alot if I didn't do that.
