Are you sure these are the same books, Rafa? One seems to be a biography while the other one is an autobiography.

Laura Meyerovich (laurameyerovich) | 8 comments Please un-combine English and Russian language editions and combine the two Russian editions:
1. Combined incorrectly - please un-combine:

Мои воспоминания and Professor Krylov's Navy They are in different languages so not the same book.

2. Same book. Please combine Мои воспоминания and The World of the Russian Naval Reformer: Reminiscences on Russian Life at the Turn of the Century

because both books are in Russian and have the same content.

You may consider leaving them also uncombined because they are sold in different markets (Russia/outside of Russia)

Goodreads combines books and their translations into different languages, regardless of what market they are sold in. I have combined the three editions.

message 309: by Laura (new)

Laura Meyerovich (laurameyerovich) | 8 comments Rivka, you mean well, but the unintended result of this approach is that I just got this update:

"Laura Meyerovich is the author of Professor Krylov's Navy (5.00 avg rating, 1 rating, 1 review, published 1942)"

If you merge only Russian editions which have only Krylov as an author, it would not happen.

Laura, Goodreads policies about what editions should be combined can be seen here: https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/2...

Since you are indeed an author (translator) of a book that was first published (albeit in a different format) in 1942, that is reflected in the Goodreads database. Every edition has both the edition's publication date, and the overall publication date for the work.

I was puzzled when I red in the English version the book was an autobiography, I am pretty sure it is the same as the original from the outline, also I am sure Juan Belmonte didn't write any work in his life. So this work is a usual biography albeit written in first person as if it were the bullfighter himself. The original release for this work was in a newspaper, directed by Manuel Chaves Nogales, in weekly excerpts. Nobody in Spain has doubts about the hand who did it.

Ok, Rafa. Firstly I had to switch Nogales as the main author of the "autobiography". Now they are combined.

Scott Cramer | 71 comments Hello, my book, Generation M (The Toucan Trilogy, #3) has seemed to divide/clone on its own.

If you could please make it so I only see one Generation M in my author dashboard, I would be grateful.

Thank you

Yes. Goodreads policy is to combine all editions of a book, including translations. See Rivka's comment 321 above. However, you have the ability to set the default edition to whichever edition/language you'd like:

Cécile Chabot (CecileChabot) | 6 comments Hi, it seems a bit strange, because then the description will appear, say in French, and English-speaking people might not see that there is an English-speaking edition.

I just don't GET it, and am pulling my hair about this (which is preventing me to create a giveaway, because I just keep on making mistakes...).

Is there anybody to whom I could tell things in an email and who could set up things properly?

Best regards,
Cécile Chabot

I have gone through and made sure each edition of Le marchand de la mort/The Merchant of Death has the appropriate language description.

Laura, as you've been told before, the default edition for books is the edition shelved by the most users. Just because your translation is more recent doesn't mean it should automatically be made the default. The only way to override the default is if the author himself were to claim his Goodreads profile and set the default. Obviously not a possibility in this instance. Once more readers shelve your edition, the book will become the default. And in the meantime, your edition is already showing on your author profile.

Z-squared -Thanks for explaining, and bear with me, I am new to Goodreads as an author. Re Russian edition: Serves me right for asking to create A N Krylov's page and ask to post the Russian editions on it.

message 336: by Z-squared (new)

Z-squared | 8575 comments I think you literally need just ONE more person to add it to their shelves, and it will become the most popular edition.

If the books are just translations of each other but otherwise have the same content, then they should be combined. There should be only one series page, although I'm not sure there's any rule about what language the series page should be in. Normally I'd go with original language of publication, myself, but I don't think that's policy. In this instance, I guess they were released simultaneously, so I'd go with whatever language was shelved more. Additionally, I'd put in the series description the alternate-language name of the series.

You can see how I've tackled it here:

https://www.goodreads.com/series/1411...

It is, actually. Or rather, the original series name is what we use, and that is usually in the language of the original publication.
