Kourtney (readthateventually) | 1215 comments Random book that I highly recommend so far:

The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible As Literally As Possible

I'm only about 40 pages in, and he has just started his second month of living biblially, and it is really interesting! He researched all types of Bibles and had pulled out all of the "rules" listed. Then he lives by them. He also meets up with religious leaders and different religious groups. For the first month he met with Amish people, and that was interesting to read about...

Check it out if you can :)

Tara - we HAVE to go as soon as it comes out!!!

Kourtney - no worries, it has the same name as the first book, so unless it's like Confessions of a Shopaholic (sorta combining two into one), you should only have to read the first one.

Alicia - Ranger was always hotter than Morelli in my head. :)

Joanne (joelizrado) | 95 comments So is anyone here a Danielle Steel fan? If so I do not mean to offend.
She really frustrates me! She comes out with books that have such a great story line but then I try to read them and can't finish. They are soooo slowww!!! And she repeats herself so much that I feel like she is insulting my intelligence; "yeah Danielle, got that the first five times you mentioned it."
So she has this new one coming out 44 Charles Street and it seems like it would be a great read, but i am reluctant to waste my time.

I like Danielle Steel but I agree her newer stuff is a little slow. I did like Big Girl though. Her new one coming out sounds good and I already put a reserve on it at the library because I am afraid to buy it.

The only book I read by Danielle Steele was called Sisters and I was really surprised that I liked it a lot...I guess I have some assumptions about Danielle Steele being a classic romance type author but really don't know much about her and unfairly judged her...I thought Sisters moved rapidly and had an intriguing plot; at least it kept me entertained and (for me) I read it pretty quickly.

I also liked that book too. I think her previously books from years ago were considered classic romance but her books nowadays are a lot better.

I read a ton of her books in high school, but haven't read any since (so 10 years). I feel like my tastes have changed too much over the years to go back. For example, I recently decided to pick up one of the newer releases from the V.C. Andrews ghostwriter. I read all of her books plus some ghostwriter ones in middle school, but this one just didn't give anything new.

I have read all the older V.C. Andrews books and I am finding I don't like the new books as much either. The writing just isn't the same even though they say it's supposed to be. Who do you think the ghostwriter is? I would love to know.

Andrew Neiderman is the ghostwriter. He used to write his own novels (I'd like to read at least one to compare, but they all seem to be out of print), but seems to have stopped to focus completely on keeping the V.C. Andrews name out there.

Ok, so I just started reading the new Dean Koontz which is the fifth book in his Frankenstein series. And when I first heard that he was making a fifth book, I got kinda pissy about it. I didn't want it to get as unrealistic and corny as Freddy Kruger and Jason Vorhees (sp?). But at the same time, I was relieved because it says it's the final volume. However, upon looking for the last page (as I always do to see how many pages a book is), I came across the page after the last page with only one sentence, "The war against humanity has begun....." And I was like, "WHAT? OMFG! Seriously?!?! Another freaking Frankenstein book?!?!?! Come ON!
......but.......as usual, now I don't want to put it down, and I've had to force myself to stop reading it for the night as it is just after 11pm (EST) and I need to get to sleep at some point which wouldn't happen if I kept going because it is starting to get seriously creepy. And that's not a good match to my over active imagination.
It has now gotten to the point where I will not be able to read it after sundown. Yes, I am that much of a wuss. :) So now I'm off to see what else I can start that will take my mind off of it enough for me to get to sleep......

LOL, I started The Mommy Fund. Only, it was like an hour later because I found a spider crawling along the baseboard and in my opinion it was freaking huge. And I have arachniphobia (sp?) in the WORST way, so pretty much every spider is huge to me. LOL! But it was the size of a quarter and that's mega freak out proportions for me.
It took me a few minutes of just staring at it (because I irrationally believe that it is going to leap at me from three feet away and inject me with venomous poison) before I had the nerve to get up and grab almost every last kleenex out of the box to form a barrier between it and my hand. Then it was hard to get to because it was right where the carpte meets the baseboard and behind the plant stand. No real good way to get it. So I tried coming in from an angle and of course as soon as it sensed me closing in, it started scurrying away - still along that line of the carpet/baseboard.
So then it goes behind my printer stand, making it even harder to get to it. So I used the printer cord to prod it along the carpet/wall line to get it out from behind the printer stand and in the open. And if just looking at a spider standing still gives me the heebie jeebies. OMG, seeing one crawling is enough to make me want to crawl right out of my own skin!
Once I got it from behind the printer stand (again, MAJOR feat for me because of the whole creepy crawly thing), I realized I still couldn't get it because it was still up against the baseboard. My carpet has a pretty high pile and I did not want to smash this thing and have spider guts all over my carpet and baseboard. Once again, I had to prod at it with the cord to get it to come away from the wall a little. And what does the little bastard do, but come right at me. Of course I back of lightning fast because again, irrationally, I think the spider is going to leap at me from a distance of at least 12 to 14 inches. (For the record, there ARE jumping spiders. And those freak me out even worse!)
Finally, I muster up all the courage I have left and make a grab at it with the wad of kleenex, and I thought I killed it in the process so I turned it over so I wouldn't drop it. And in doing so, some of the kleenex came unfolded over it. I brought it a little closer to my face to get a good look at it so I could try to figure out what kind of spider it was and commit details to memory to look it up online. (Also hard to do because I have to look at pictures of the creepy little bastards.)
And of course, it must've just been playing dead, or maybe I stunned it because it like, literally leapt up on it's.....feet(?) and was going to try to run off. I half expected this (not the first time it's happened) so I was ready and squished the kleenex back down over it.
Then I hurried into the bathroom and dumped it in the toilet. The damn thing was STILL alive. STILL! It was crawling all over its slowly sinking island of kleenex trying to find a dry spot or a way out or something. Since I knew it couldn't get out, I grabbed my camera and took a picture of it so I could use it for reference to figure out what kind it is. Then I flushed it to its watery grave. HA! That'll teach that spider to come in my apartment.
This whole process took a good 20 minutes, and then I spent the better part of the next hour going through websites and pictures trying to figure out what kind of spider it was. And to be honest, I may have it narrowed down to a few types of these eight legged little monstrosities, but I can't find the exact spider. And that flips me out even more because I'm sure there's more in here that I can't see and I don't know if they're poisonous or not!
Anyway, long story short - it was so late by the time I actually did start reading, I didn't get more than 15 or 20 (maybe) pages into the book.

This is why I rarely read books at night before I go to bed. If the book is good, I just end up staying up all night reading.

And you're not the only wuss. I was so scared reading Dean Koontz's "Intensity" that I made my husband (then boyfriend) come over and sit with me as I finished it because I was afraid to be alone in the house!

LMAO! That was a good one too! I love his books, I've been reading them since I was 12 - might be the cause of the over active imagination. I hate having to wait for a new one all the time. And I don't know why I can never learn from my past mistake of reading his books at night. I do it every time. :)
My favorite of his is The Taking.

Kourtney (readthateventually) | 1215 comments Signs you have a book-related problem:

Today is the big day! The movers are coming and I'm moving 5 towns over to start a new chapter in my life! I pack and move all of my own boxes and just have the movers come in to do the big furniture. I already know what I'm unpacking first - my books!! They are the easiest thing to set up and I can quickly get rid of all of the boxes :) I think at last count it was 16 boxes of just books (although I keep finding random books in random places!)

I can't wait to be done so I can finish Last Night at Chateau Marmont. After the debacle known as Chasing Harry Winston I was hesitant to start this one, but I got it from PBS and decided "Why not - all of my other books are packed" and I'm glad I did! I am really enjoying this one!

Good luck on the move Kourtney! I have just as many books and don't look forward to packing them when we move.

I have that book to, I got it for Christmas last year, but haven't read it yet.
