Allison (inconceivably) Category 2 - Archer's Goon by Diana Wynne Jones

It is one of Neil Gaiman's Top 10 favorites as well as fantasy...so we could kill two birds with one stone. :D

I just bought this because it's sequel (Powers) just won the Nebula Award

message 5: by Adam (new)

Adam | 5 comments Are there actually any books in YA that aren't fantasy? I know there are a couple, but browsing the shelves at my local bookstore, it seems like 9/10 are fantasy.

message 6: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) My two favorites right now are already in - Archer's Goon & A Northern Light.

Kim (kimtobash) | 4 comments As Fantasy, I would like to nominate "Order of the Odd Fish" by James Kennedy. He is coming to my classroom to do a reading. I wrote him because I bought it as a gift for one of my students, for mopening night and he loved it so much I felt compelled to write him to let him know. Who knew he lived in the same city and he offered to come to a reading I bought it for myself, but I promise to wait until June 1st to start reading it. My students reaction is priceless!!!

My first cat. nomination is Speak, by Laurie Anderson.

message 22: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Teresa, you can only choose one category for nominations. :)

message 24: by Emily (new)

Emily | 25 comments Category 2: The 13 Clocks by James Thurber

On a related note, is there anywhere where previous picks are complied? I'm new to this and hoping that I'm not nominating a previous winner.

message 25: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Emily, this is actually only the second round of book nominations we've done. The previous book picks are the ones you see on the group homepage: The Graveyard Book and Anne of Green Gables. That's it! :)

You bring up a good point though. I think that Fiona and Laura are going to use the group bookshelf only for official group reads. Members cannot add books to it, only mods can.

message 26: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) (By the way, love your Daria avi -- I used to love watching that show when it was on!)

message 27: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) Fiona wrote: "Only one category please Teresa - it has to be one or the other not both."

message 30: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) The Vampire Diaries are by L.J. Smith. The first volume is called The Awakening, but the first two volumes are currently being printed together in one book: The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening and The Struggle.

message 31: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 342 comments For category 1, I'd like to throw in Rules by Cynthia Lord, a wonderful read I just finished and would gladly read again (a quick read) with the group. Rules by Cynthia Lord

Hehe, you're the moderator, you get to decide. It sounds good to me.

message 35: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey | 1046 comments You mean May, right Fiona? lol.

Samantha McNulty Fiona wrote: "Yeah... i'm a ditz. Good thing you all know that what I mean is different from what I say."

We still all love you for being ditzy though, Fiona!

message 37: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) P.S. Die a slow painful death if you don't change your vote to Lightning Thief ;)

message 38: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) I already read The Lightning Thief! But it's an awesome book so I'm kind of hoping it wins so everyone else gets to read it.

message 39: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) yeah, I'll be happy if Graceling wins because I loved it :) So you don't have to die Heather ;)

message 40: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) hmm...well, I think it comes out in PB fairly soon doesn't it? I'm waiting until then to buy it, personally...but then, I've already read it.

I probably would have gone out and bought it if I hadn't been able to get it at the library...and I wouldn't have regretted it :)

message 41: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Do you get Borders coupons Heather? I have a 20% one somewhere I think, maybe you can use it.

message 42: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) I'm hoping for Graceling, too. I've heard good things about it and I've already read The Lightning Thief and Howl's Moving Castle.

message 43: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) yeah...I'm not really being a baby about what wins :P I'll probably read Lightning Thief sometime in the next couple weeks anyway, and I would love for more people to read Graceling :)

message 44: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) Allison is a reading machine.

message 45: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Alexis wrote: "Allison is a reading machine."

nah, just impatient :)

message 46: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Fiona wrote: "I've never heard of The Lightening Thief before today! Hmmm... might not be the one I read as I don't have it, but I have The Northern Light which I will."

its the first of a...5 book series, right? Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

message 47: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) Allison wrote: "nah, just impatient :)"

LOL I know the feeling. I have a whole shelf of library books and all I want to do is read them.

The paperback of Graceling is listed as coming out in September. :(

message 48: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (alexabexis) Fiona wrote: "OH! Him. Heard of but don't think I've actually seen the books yet."

It's a great series. They're currently working on a movie based on the first book.

message 49: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I was hoping Howl would win, since I've read Graceling and The Lightning Thief, but I'll be happy with whatever wins. Both of these books were really good, and I'd be glad that more people would get a chance to read one of them if either were chosen.

message 50: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) oo cool, now Howl's is taking the lead!
