Allison Janezic (allilj) | 120 comments Here ya go... I have a lot to say...

It was different from the novel and there are things that were changed in my opninion for the better of the film. My suggestion would be to go into this with that in mind. You can never have an exact book to film adaptation because it would be way to long and in some cases not work on film. Film is a different media than the written word.

I have to admit I enjoyed Lily Collins as Clary very much and IMO she made me like Clary more by being in this role. While I'm not a huge Clary fan (I actually love Simon and Magnus the most) I found myself really watching Lily portray Clary and it made me like her much more than I had to begin with.

Simply put Jamie is Jace. At times he is beautiful and other times kind of angular in appearance. Certainly he has an ethereal quality to his look that make him physically perfect for the role but what truly sells him as Jace is his timing and delivery of every Jacelike line that was written for him. Honestly I can not picture a better Jace.

How can I say that Simon is perfect? I did not know who Rob was before this movie but I now need to find his other roles because he was absolutely without a doubt every ounce of Simon. If I didn't know he was Irish I would have never guessed. His American accent was flawless. I truly felt for him when he finally told Clary how he felt.

Alec had very little screen time and really came off as a total ass. It almost made me dislike him but knowing why he does what he does I can't do it. Some may feel Kevin is too old for Alec and while he kind of is in reality, I think that his Alec was much more of a brooding older brother/protector on screen and thus it didn't seem to diminish the flow of the film. In a way I felt he was trying to keep his family together and felt threatened by Clary and Jace's inability to filter himself when things involved her.

Of all the characters in the book the one that I felt the most distance from was Isabelle. I found her to be a bit of a snob and not really the nurturing type. However, I found that Jemima not only showed a bit of compassion in her as Isabelle but without a doubt is most bad ass chick with a whip outside of Catwoman. She was the very fun to watch.

The movie was dark, fast, entertaining and without a doubt a great movie for not only fans of the book but also people that are into action. I will take my 16 year old nephew to see it. He thought it would be more of a love story and stayed home. The romance does not define this film. It is a part of it but it is not Twilight. For that I am grateful. It gives the film a wider audience to entertain. I will say some will not like how Hodge's speech to Valentine goes. I believe they did what they did to not offend the general public. It is a change that in my opinion is needed. Why? Well if you only please the fans you will lose the franchise on film. You need to generate new fans for this to be successful overall.

There were a couple of things I did not like. One was the dubbing of Magnus' voice. IMO Godfrey Gao is speaks English fine and there was no need for it. It just seemed a bit out of place. Luckily he didn't have a whole lot of screen time so it was a bit easier to overlook. However it took me a few moments to truly stop being mad at the film makers for doing it to begin with. Valentine's braids. Really? Someone get him to The Hair Cuttery. Lose them for City of Ashes.

All in all I LOVED IT

Taylor11 | 14 comments If you are looking for more Robert Sheehan roles, check out: him as nathan in misfits and Darren in love/hate, both on Hulu. Also the red riding trilogy on Netflix and a movie with Nicholas cage I can't think of. :)

message 6: by Maddison (new)

Maddison (mmjinx) I watched It yesterday it was AWESOME!!!
We came 3 and 1/2 hours before the movie started just to get the best seats.
They did miss some scenes from the book and now that I've seen those specific actors play clary and jace and the rest of the characters well I can't think of anyone else playing those parts but then again I wasn't bothered by the actor choosing, I was just happy it was getting made into a movie.
It is definitely worth seeing its just amazing to see one of my favourite books made into a movie, it was incredible. And now we have to wait which will seem to me like a billion years for it come onto DVD and to wait for City Of Ashes... Sigh let the slow torturous wait begin...

Andrea (annic24) | 2 comments the movie was ok.....some of the important parts are missing.....still the book is much better though.

Isabella (livbet) | 20 comments The Robert Sheehan/Nicolas Cage movie is Season of the Witch. He's an amazing actor - don't know if anyone else could have made the obnoxious Nathan (Misfits) so lovable.

message 9: by Britt (new)

Britt (Kalebsmome) It was different but still good. There is so much content that it would be really hard as people have said to translate EVERYtHiNG from the book but I think they did a good job. The silent brother were creepy as all hell and Simon was hilarious better than book Simon even. It was good and cleared up alot of questions people I'm assuming would have. Lets face it very few movies are as good as books but it was still soooooooooo good.i had Dreams about Jace all night. Yes!!!

message 10: by Kenni (new)

Kenni The books will always be better, but I did love the movie. I was so worried about Jamie as Jace, but now I realize that he was the perfect person for the role. I LOVED him in it. Also I was worried about Lily as Clary, but I thought she did a fantastic job. I was a little disappointed by Magnus, I thought he would have more.... flair. He wasn't really in the movie that much, but he wasn't memorable. If I hadn't read the book I'm not sure I would have noticed Magnus at all. I thought that the demons were scary, and rightly so. It was tense, in a good way. Some back stories were left out, but they would have made the movie too long. The things they changed turned out to be ok. I LOVED that they kept the greenhouse scene between Jace and Clary pretty much the same. Those whole couple of scenes from the Greenhouse to Simon storming off were as close to the book as it could get. I am excited to see what they do with City of Ashes.

Kristen | 7 comments I think I would give this 4 stars out of 5. Overall I really enjoyed the movie and would love to go back over the weekend and see it as a $5 movie at AMC (I’m cheap, I don’t want to pay full price to see it a second time!) There were a few things I didn’t like which prevent me from giving it 5 stars. So let’s go over everything I didn’t like:

1. Magnus! OMG. He’s one of my favorite characters spanning The Infernal Devices and Mortal Instruments series. I did NOT think they did him justice. I think he looked the part. But that’s as far as it went. As soon as he talked, I hated him. He was an awful actor. And he was not nearly gay or flamboyant enough. They definitely failed in portraying Magnus for me.
2. Plot flow. The plot flow was a little off. It started out following the first book, but some things were super rushed and some things were definitely not explained well (i.e. the curse on Hodge). And then they started adding things from book 2 and changing some things. So the plot just didn’t flow nearly as well as the books do. But having read all the books, I was never lost. But someone who hasn’t read the books might get a little lost and confused at some parts.
3. Valentine. Why was he so young?! He doesn’t look like he could have a 15 year old kid! It was ridiculous to me. Sure he looked a little menacing, but it was kind of hard to take him seriously when he was so young. I wasn’t able to believe that he was Clary’s dad. Another fail in my opinion. But he wasn’t involved much in this movie, so it didn’t hurt the rating in my eyes as much.
4. (view spoiler)
5. All the shadowhunters were British! Why? That kind of boggled my mind. Not a huge strike because I got over it quickly, but It’s just a brain teaser to me. I have no idea why they were all British.

Ok, so now let’s talk about the good parts:

1. Clary, Simon, Jace. I think they casted everyone pretty well. Jaime Campbell Bower is a little feminine in facial features than I imagined Jace being, but overall I think he did him justice. He was pretty witty and delivered most of the sarcastic comments well. Lily Collins surprisingly was perfect as Clary. I wasn’t sure how I felt about her until I watched the movie. But she did a pretty good job and was a pretty good actress. I was pleasantly surprised. And Simon. I think he was perfect.
2. Action and fighting sequences. I thought the fighting and action sequences were done really well. They were visually stimulating and you could always tell what was going on. And I really liked when they used their swords and steles, and Isabelle used her whip. I think they nailed it. They didn’t downplay the action and violence – it was perfect.
3. Lines from the book. I didn’t realize until I really started reading the book again (because I couldn’t leave the story with that ending!) how many lines they actually pulled from the book. I love it. I like it when screen play writers and producers keep things in there for the diehard book lovers. Sure, some of the lines could have been delivered a little better, but overall I think it was great.
4. Intensity. I think they really built up the intensity of the movie as soon as Clary’s mom was attacked all the way to the end. There was never a dull moment. Everyone was on the edge of their seat. There were even a couple times where my husband and I jumped because something freaked us out.
5. The demons were created beautifully. They were just as disgusting and scary as described in the books! And most of the bad shadowhunters were just as creepy as I imagined.
6. The setting. They did a great job creating the setting of the shadowhunter world. The institute looked almost as I imagined it. And the rooms, were identical! I couldn’t believe how much the inside of the institute looked like in my head. I guess Clare has a knack of great description.

It seems I’ve listed almost the same amount of things I liked as disliked. But the things I liked far out-weighed the things I didn’t like. I think they did a pretty good job with the movie – not on the same level as The Hunger Games, but I think they did a better job than Twilight. Though I think the Twilight plot was done better because it actually stuck to the book for the most part.

PS: To celebrate the release of the movie, the kindle edition of “Myths and Motifs of The Mortal Instruments will be free from the publisher on August 23 and 24! http://www.amazon.com/Myths-Motifs-Mo...

They dubbed his voice?! Is that why it sounded so bad??? I had no idea! He was my least favorite part of the movie! He looked the part. But as soon as he talked I hated him. And I didn't think he acted nearly gay or flamboyant enough. But part of that is probably due to the voice dubbing. I can't believe they did that!

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm sorry but I think they butchered it. I love the book so much and was so disappointed in the movie. My favorite couple (Magnus and Alec) were in screen for like 2 seconds and were not done justice at all. I know you can never get it exactly like the book but they weren't even close in my opinion. And I hated that horrible song that played during the greenhouse scene. I hope they do a lot better with COA but I don't think we will see any more after that.
And to be clear I LOVE these books and wanted to love the movie.

I agree. But I think the reason for it was that they dubbed his voice. It was noticeable. IMO that is why he didn't seem as free spirited.

I read that the reason that a lot of the actors were British was because they were trying to portray the fact that most of the characters came from a different country (Idris). If you notice, mostly every Shadowhunter had an accent and then the New Yorkers didn't. They say Idris is somewhere in Europe, so I guess a British accent was easier to cast :)

message 21: by Olivia (last edited Aug 24, 2013 04:57PM) (new)

Olivia (livvie_simone) I would give the movie around 6/10 . Now don't think that means I thought It was terrible, because I thought it was really fun to watch. I think the major issue for me was that they seemed to go from scene to scene attempting to cram as much as they could in too quickly. I would be fine if they took a few things out so they could have more time with characters. We barely got to get an idea of who anyone is and there were many things unexplained, so a person who hasn't read the book would probably have a few questions. Some things they didn't explain included:
•the lightwoods: they didn't say anything of who Alec and Isabelle were in relation to Jace. We know Alex and Izzy are related, but what are they all doing at the institute? Why is Jace with them? Why are they the only ones there? These are questions people who have t read the book would ask.
•steles/runes: it was mentioned how runes give powers to shadowhunters but that was it.
•Magnus: they really didnt explain the importance of Magnus, and I honestly can't even remember of they mentioned he was a warlock. And there was obviously the issue of his voice.
Etc. my other main issue with the movie the music. I love movies and one of my favorite parts of movies are the scores ( the music that plays in the background ). A really good movie has the perfect score so if there is a battle going on, there is really intense music. Or if some major plot is revealed and everything stops, then the music quiets, slows, or stops completely. People don't realize the effect that the score has on a film and I think the City of Bones score made the movie seem really cheesy.
Best example of this is the greenhouse kiss scene ( which I thought was WAY to heated since it was their first kiss and because the movie made it seem like clary and Jace knew each other for 2 or 3 days therefore making them look like teens ravished by lust ). When they kissed, Heart by Heart by Demi lovato started playing which was just a really bad idea in my opinion. That is the kind of scene on which sweet music ( with no words ) plays in the background while they have their moment. Then the sprinklers went off...*sigh* I also thought the music didnt fit the scene where the group was fighting the vampires at the hotel Dumont.
I know I just went off about all the negatives, but there are parts I really liked. Most of those came from Simon. I think they did his character PERFECTLY and Robert did a great job of acting him out. I love how they kept a lot of lines from the book and I loved the scene with the Silent Brothers.
Overall grade: c-

Kylie (kyliecarstairs) | 10 comments I just saw it, and I was very disappointed. THEY TOOK OUT SOME OF THE FUNNIEST LINES!!! AND EVEN THE FUNNY LINES THEY DID KEEP IN WEREN'T DONE WELL!!! I also did not like Jamie as Jace because he's not gorgeous and charismatic enough. He was too serious in the movie. He's supposed to be egotistical, amusing, and arrogant!!! I did not like Alec!!! He was WAY too old!!! I did, however like Simon and Magnus!!! GODFREY GAO IS JUST SO GORGEOUS!!! I was really upset that they cut out many hilarious Magnus scenes and lines!!! AND SIMON WAS SUPPOSED TO BE TURNED INTO A RAT!!! AND ISABELLE WASN'T SASSY, INTIMIDATING, WITTY, AND GORGEOUS LIKE SHE'S SUPPOSED TO BE!!! I am still reeling... I feel that if I hadn't read the books I would like the movie... The movie itself was good, but it was nothing compared to the books, and that it why I am so incredibly disappointed... I have so many complaints about this movie... I'm so disappointed...

message 26: by Allison (new)

Allison Janezic (allilj) | 120 comments The Ring: They never said any other family had them. It would be unimportant to the story on screen. It would take forever to explain and in the movie industry time is money. They needed to keep the majority of the story and leave out smaller details that fans know are important but we had several books to explain it.

Magnus: Isabelle stated he was the HIGH WARLOCK OF BROOKLYN in the room scene. Still shaking my head over the dubbing of his voice I tweeted the director to not do that in COA. Guess I was really upset by it.

Music: I have to agree with Olivia that some of the music seemed out of place. I did not like the hard music used in the hotel. It seemed b-movieish. JMO though. I would have preferred a more instrumental score.

IMO any book is best as a mini series on TV. It is only then you will get the full experience.

Hmm, That's interesting. I guess that works. But did they all have to be British? It did get across that they have a different world...but I just thought it was weird they all had accents...but then they took away Magnus's accent? Idk. At least there was some reasoning behind it! Thanks for the link! I liked him so much better in his interview! His accent was really strong, but it was definitely there. I think it would have been so much better to just let it be like that. I think he probably struggled so much to not let his accent come through that it really affected his acting.

message 29: by Zoe (new)

Zoe Jackson (zoes_reads) Okay so I avoiding reading reviews until I saw it, which was on Sunday. I give it a 7/10.

Disliked:
1) I did not like the lack of Magnus and the fact that they dubbed his voice. He speaks better English then some Americans, and his accent is beautiful;.Magnus is one of my fave characters, and he was not their enough.
2)The illusion to Simons vampirism and the fact that he didn't turn into a rat.
3) Alec came off even more bitchy then he was and their wasn't enough of him to get past that.
4) The score and soundtrack were TERRIBLE. COB is not a freaking Disney movie. Demi Lovoto does not come on during the greenhouse scene. The score was too dramatic, most viewere are teen =s or adults. We don't need loud noises to explain a scene.
5) Jamie wasn't that funny. He was hot, and visually he was good, but he wasn't sarcastic, funny or cocky. Too serious.
6) The whole portal thing. It was weird.
7) The brother sister thing (view spoiler)
8) The accents. I would've loved a Magnus accent, but alas their was none. So of course practicaly everyone was foreign, and you could tell. Jocelyn, Izzy, Jace... shall I go on. Robbie(Simon) did a great job w/ masking his Irish accent.
9) No dialogue. Too much fighting...
And my biggest problem: Lack of information. My mom and aunt went with me, and they had lots of questions. My mom even said that she thought I explained things better then the movie did.

Likes:
1) Lily Collins. She's perfect, and I liked Clary more because of it.
2) Robert Sheeran was amazing. I really felt for him. A great actor.
3) The Institute. The outside was just how I pictured it, and so were the bedrooms.
4) Jocelyn's kidnapping was perfect.
5) The fighting sequences were perfect and easy to follow.
6) Magnus looked the part. But the dubbing of his voice took away from his performance.
7) Luke totally was what imagined.
8) Valentine. I liked very much. He's sooo cute!
9) The demons. Not excattly what I pictured, but I liked how creepy the one in the apartment was, the possession, and the fire demons were cool.
10) The visuals were perfect.

All in all, it was okay, not bad but nowhere near the book. They can always improve for COA. I got two family members to read it so yeah! I think I need to see it one more time....lol.

message 30: by Lily (new)

Lily I liked the movie, but found that is was a little jumpy from bit to bit. I was a little confused by the end, and was left wondering how they will start the next film. Overall the cast was amazing and I loved finally being able to see the shadowhunter world on the big screen.

message 31: by Areti (new)

Areti | 114 comments I liked the greenhouse scene! The fight scene between Jace and Valentine and in the vampire's hotel. The institute was great and and all the effects! I liked jamie and lily as jace and clary but i hope jamie will be more sarcastic and not so serious/angry in the next movie! All the cast was great! I really liked Isabelle! I liked that she was the hardcore and sexy chick and not so girly as in the books! Gofrey was a great choice for Magnus! I loved the silent brothers it was exactly how i pictured them!
I didn't like the rush of the movie! They didn't explain a lot of things and if you hadn't read the book you could't understand why hodge is cursed, why jocelyn married such a cruel man etc. i didn't like that jace and clary didn't go alone in the hotel dumort! It was a main thing because they got to know each other better and it was the first time that jace left alec behind! I did't like valentine much! Not the acting but it wasn't the valentine i pictured him! He got to be blonde to be more realistic that is Jace's father! And also if the release the third movie how jonathan would be if valentine is brown-haired? I didn't like that valentine knew that clary was his daughter and that jace didn't remember him! I wanted to see the demonic motorcycle in action, simon as a rat and more fighting betwenn jace and simon! For the end i didn't like that they changed the plot and clary keeps the cup and also that they put some stuff from the second book in the first!
Generally i liked the movie and maybe i didn't enjoy it much because i had recetly finished the book again and the differences were more obvious! I hope the next movie will be better and have a better box office!

I didn't have any problem with the actors. The only problem I had that really related to acting was the fact they dubbed Godfrey Gao's voice. So he really didn't do the voice of Magnus. Otherwise he was perfect. I liked who they chose for the actors in this film just fine.

Islam Ahmed (islamahmed0904) I understand that when transitioning a book into a movie there some adjustments to be made to make the film a fair amount of time. Don't get me wrong I'll watch a five-hour long City of Bones if they made one. I guess all I'm saying is that they said that they couldn't include all scenes of the book in the movie, but if that was the case then why did they ADD things to the movie that weren't supposed to be there in the first place?! I won't give any examples 'cause I might spoil it for those who didn't watch it.

The reason they left out certain things was for time. It would take too long to put in the part where (view spoiler) or (view spoiler). Plus those two scenes were not relevant to the plot. They really didn't add scenes but did change certain ones by combining them.

message 39: by readeraz (new)

readeraz (zoethereader) | 32 comments I have so much to say about this movie...

Plot: The plot of this movie was completely messed up. It seemed to me as though the director completely ignored the fact that there even WAS a book. They changed my favorite parts from the book, COMPLETELY. I feel like certain scenes were stupid, unneeded and not well directed. The fighting was actually pretty well done, but the placement of certain fighting scenes were forced and awkward. My friend who did not even read the books thought the movie was horrible. She thought it was confusing and not well directed. All I could do as a MAJOR fan of this series, was sit and watch as it burned and failed. I couldn't believe what they did to one of my favorite book series.

Specifically:
- Clary kept the mortal cup.
-The main fight scene happened at the institute! Wtf! Why not Rennwicks?
-Demons can't step into sunlight of hallow ground
-The ENTIRE vampire hotel scene
-How they spoiled that Simon becomes a Vampire
-They had sprinklers go off when Clary and Jace kiss. (They went full-on twilight)
- How Clary ends up at Luke's (With that weird little girl in a dress)
-The mortal cup just turns you into a Shadow hunter. NOTHING ELSE!
-How could clary kick her shadow hunter father into a portal? She had NO training!
-Clary doesn't know she has the ability to create runes until the second book
-THE ENDING. WHAT IS SHE? SOME SORT OF WIZARD WHO CAN MAGICALLY MOVE THINGS. NO. JUST NO.

The Cast:
- Clary was ok, acting a tiny bit cheesy.
- Jace was not the jace in the book. Not only is the Jace in the books supposed to be tall and muscular, but he is also supposed to be funny/snarky/cocky. Movie Jace was tiny, and not funny in anyway.
-Simon was freaking perfect.
- Isabelle was ok, a little awkward sometimes
-Alec was good.
-Magnus looked AMAZING. But he was not funny, sassy Magnus in the books.
-Jocelyn was awesome
-Luke was bad, acting and appearance.
-Hodge was perfect
-Valentine was TOO YOUNG. And his character was not very developed.

Overall I did not like this movie and I am very sad about how much they screwed it up. :(

I agree with you on most. They couldn't film on an island/Rennwicks probably because of budget. I thought Jace's acting was errkay but yeah his bod was not rocking, not that I'm mocking Jaime but Jace is supposed to be like a shadowhunter sexy god model. I agree with you on everything else :D

Cameron Piper | 2 comments I just need to start by saying I loved this movie. I was so excited when it came to theaters and I intend to buy it on DVD. Honestly I love these books and the characters, so I would watch any movie they made. With that said, the movie had its ups and downs.
Ups: Lilly Collins is a great Clary.
Anything that's has Jace in it is a good thing. :D
The grafics were great.
It was based off one of my favorite books!

Downs: the actress who played Isabelle did not look sixteen
Valentine was the complete opposite of what he should have been.
Simon doesn't turn into a rat.
The end was not as it was in the book. Like, it was really off.

But I will be impatiently waiting for the next movie. And the next. And the next. And the next. And the next. Yes, that is right. I expect to see all six of them go to theaters. Because if twilight can make 5 movies, then so can COB

The general public doesn't even want to see a 2nd movie because everyone thinks its disturbing that "brother" and "sister" are/were in love with each other. I've been told that many times, and I don't know how to explain to them that its still a good story without ruining it for them.. ugh.

Lauren | 1 comments Tbh I thought the movie was so bad compared to the books! One it moved WAY to fast and didn't really explain why things were happening! Like the first few secnes were way too fast. I didn't really feel the passion between Jace and clary at all needless to say that was a huge disappointment... Simon was well played. Lily Colin's is not the best actress and I feel she needed into be clary a lot more! She wasn't the short awkward clary I pictured I mean yeah in some ways she is but seriously the lack of compassion between her and Jace made me want to cry with anger like why! But jacks was okay again needs more chemistry with lily
