Because there WASN'T any...at least not for the Dollanger family of FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC...grandma and grandpa were SERIOUSLY F****D up! Especially, if you read the prequel to that book and find out that at one point after HIS father died, Grandpa RAPED his STEPMOTHER! Urk! His half brother...the father of the grandkids was only about 2 years old.

Kirsten: School starts on the 17th of this month for the Catholic school a couple blocks from my apartment.

Currently enjoying my current bio, about King Edward I, better than I did my July bio about Laura Ingalls Wilder... .

Speaking in Bones (Temperance Brennan, #18) by Kathy Reichs

The compelling new Dr Temperance Brennan novel from the world-class forensic anthropologist and Number 1 bestselling author Kathy Reichs.

Thank you to Net Galley, publishers and the author for an advance copy for a honest review.

When forensic anthropologist Dr Tempe Brennan is approached by amateur detective Hazel ‘Lucky’ Strike, at first she is inclined to dismiss the woman’s claims that she’s matched a previously unidentified set of remains with a name.

But as the words of a terrified young woman echo round her office from an audio recorder found near where the bones were discovered, something about the story won’t let Tempe go.

We are introduced to the wonderful world of "web sleuthing" amateur detectives use on-line resources to "assist" the authorities in all sorts of cases. In this book, we concentrate on identification of missing persons. Tempe is visited by one such sleuth who believes that she has evidence in one of Tempe's unidentified cases. What follows then takes us cross-jurisdiction to a small town and leads us down a convoluted path, full of dead ends and sharp turns until eventually we discover the shocking truth.

Although mumber eight in the series, my first by this author, as a Net Galley book, and a Pick It For Me Book, with my group " A Good Thriller".

As an honest review I have to give my opinion on this author, what I really like about these books is the way we are privy to Brennan's internal dialogue and thought processes. I also like the drip-fed forensic methods that are explained within it.

But also the character herself, a great personality, great supporting characters and story.

But lacks the excitment of many books I have read recently, no great build up, no great shocks and twists, not that much tension.

But a great respect for her knowledge and depth on the main characters.

A three star book for me.

Amber Martingale Although I stated yesterday that I was enjoying my August PIFM better than I had my July PIFM, today I started getting bored with it. If I can't make at least 5 pages worth of progress by this time next week,I'm deleting the book and declaring it a failure.

Perri | -43 comments Wow, Amnber, we haven't had a whole lot of luck PIFY. I think we should start a sub-thread. nominate a good book for Amber, and of our in common books, I pick What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Munroe . Feel free and I encourage you to ignore my suggestion :)

message 205: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale I know. The last decent PIFM I had was in June.

Of Amber's 1594 and my 694 books on our To Read shelves, there is not one single book we have in common. I wouldn't dare suggest a book for Amber.

Brenda | 2434 comments Janet, have you decided yet when to put up the September threads?

That is pretty amazing! :)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I started one of the two books that tied for me today: The Cincinnati Red Stalkings The Cincinnati Red Stalkings by Troy Soos by Troy Soos. I am already 1/3 the way through it. It reminds me why I loved this series! I wish I could go back in time and watch the game played back then!

I also finished reading the other winner: Double Play Double Play (Burke, #1) by Robert B. Parker by Robert B. Parker

I'm on White is the Coldest Colour and I'm a bit torn, because I really like the writing, but I despise the main character so much it really cracks my heart. He is so repulsive, and usually I'm not such an impressionable person.
I read Brenda's review and I know I have to keep up because it's worthwile. So I go on! I'm sure I will cope with it :)

Who knows, Brenda? You might get lucky.

Perri: Yeah.

I made about 20 pages progress. I guess I was just thrown by the intricacies of Edward I's dealings with the native born Prince of Wales...unfortunately I forgot the prince's name. Grrrrr... .

E. | 653 comments Perri, I like that book suggestion. I marked it and one review said the audiobook was really good (narrated by Wil Wheaton -who's usually a fun narrator)
Geeky curiosity and humor is right up my alley.

message 213: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) E. - it's a real funny book. I have it from Audible. It was on their Daily Deal many months ago.

Wil Wheaton is perfect! I've loved every book he's narrated. He also did Redshirts and Ready Player One.

I finished my August PIFM 'The comfort of black' 4 stars from me. Thanks to all that voted it for me!

message 215: by [deleted user] (new)

Oops, I'm sorry for the previous post! I thought I was writing on "What are you currently reading" :D.
Sorry for my mistake, next time I will pay more attention.
Wow, this "Pick it for me" thing seems challenging by the way.

It's good you're repulsed, rokovoko. It's a normal and healthy reaction. I look forward to your review.

I finished it Brenda, 4 stars from me! It was a dense reading for sure. I really appreciated how the author managed the investigation and my emotions as well. I was so captivated and anxious I think I yelled at every poor page.

Sorry it was a dud for you.

What are a few of your favorites from the past few years? I don't have a lot of books in common with you so I most likely contribute to your duds. Sorry.

message 224: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale The book wasn't the dud. The movie was.

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments I browsed through your lists and seen some Sherlock Holmes books on the shelves, what about that for a read?

BTW I've seen at Amazon they are offering until the End of August the entire Sherlock Holmes Collection for 99 cents. If you are interested I can sent you the link.

I might add one of them to my September List...as #10 since all I do from month to is erase the title of the book that won the previous month, renumber the remaining books and add a new #10.

I don't have the money to spare this month for amazon.com purchases. Sorry but thanks for the offer.

Mandy (penn_y_lane) | 547 comments Just finished The Killing Place (Rizzoli & Isles, #8) by Tess Gerritsen my Aug read, I had forgotten how good Gerristen's Rizzoli & Isles books are, total escapism! I've not read one for years and will be reading another one soon. Flew through it in a couple of days, thanks for picking it for me :)

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 1462 comments Yesterday I read the 'lighter' of my both books Taken by Dee Henderson and though Dee Henderson's books are known to be suspense pur this one was very different. I would shelf it more as a drama with slight touches of romance and suspense but still drama.
I enjoyed it very much. The fact I read it in one go through is a proof - especially now. The last two weeks I wasn't able to stick longer than two hours at a time to one book.
Though I'm still dreading the other one - Sidetracked by Brandilyn Collins . Usually I love Brandylin Collins, but her books are very graphic and tough, somtimes also very bloody.
I still have ten days so no reason to panic :-)

An amazing thriller with fascinating, twisted characters and a catchy plot!!
So thanks for everyone who voted for it :~)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1229 comments I finally finished my July read, Night Clinic by David Gelber . This was a collection of short stories that follow the fantastic escapades of a nigtht clinic. Dr. Barnes and his Nurse James are wonderful characters. If you like the bizarre and humorous, you will love this one.

I have been a little behind lately. I am now starting my August selection.

message 233: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Waiting for my votes to tell me what two books for next month have the highest votes.
