Yeah, I completely agree on that point. The book, afterall,is the book..

Yeah, I know she probably had a reason, but couldn't he just keep one thing? One small ray of light? :( I keep (a lot) of birds myself I just hated that Hedwig was bumped off :(

I read that too, that she killed of Hedwig to represent Harry's loss of innocence

I think the thing that he gets to keep (aside from friends, etc.) is his wand. It was destroyed and should have been unrecoverable, but he was able to restore it with the elder wand. A small thing, with big consequences, yet a link to his past.

For me personally I would prefer if Fred didn't die. It was much to heartbreaking for me. They were my favorite characters in the book, and I can't stand the thought of George running their shop without him.

This is a story about war and survival. War kills people, and changes the survivors forever; that's just the way it is.
The thing I would change wouldn't really change the plot or the end result at all: A little more careful editing with the details, especially dates. A lot of people (myself included) have fun figuring things out that are not explicitly stated, so when there's conflicting information in the details it's just plain annoying.
I would of let a lot more characters live (especially Remus Lupin and Tonks my favorite characters):(

I can only think that I would have loved Snape's demise to be more like portrayed in the movie. I thought it was brilliant (probably due mostly to Alan Rickman) and the book moved me much less than the movie did in only that one point.
