I have to admit, the books that are in the lead are a suprise to me. Not at all the ones I would have expected to be the "big hits"..... hmmmmm.....

Manday | 212 comments Interesting that women in white is doing well. I had never heard much about it and now its the june book for my real life book club as well as being in here.

Allison (inconceivably) Woman in White is my FAVORITE classic, I love it :)

message 104: by Salsadancer (new)

Salsadancer | 4 comments I just looked at the list (click on polls at top right of page) and there are quite a few books I am not familiar with, particarly in the Cat 1 section, so I want to look them up, check them out. I'll be back to vote!

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments I tried to read Woman in White but the main character (Walter Hartright) pissed me off too much. I might take another crack at it after a while. I just tried to read it a few weeks ago.

message 106: by El (new)

El For those who liked Woman in White I also recommend Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone. Both books are good stuff.

Thanks Diane. The polls work so much better than the old way we used to do it.... I dont have to tally anything, goodreads does it all for me :)

Yvonne thanks Jamie.......I am new at this.

Mosca | 828 comments My God! "Zombies" is leading the race for fiction!

The barbarians are assailing the basic values of Christendom!

Are no classic values to be left unviolated?

Is there no sanctuary left for untrammeled nineteenth century idealism?

May all those of chivalrous hearts bound themselves to the redemtion of our most basic literary parochialisms!

To the polls, my fellow Romantics! We pledge our hearts and swords to free this citadel from the godless zombie apostates!

Vote now and vote often!

I promise to be more "alert" next time too! Not only did I nominate one for each category, I nominated after the nominations were closed! What a geek I was! But I figure everyone is forgiving of the newbies ;)

Tom wrote: "Mosca, can we really vote often or are you being a tad tongue in cheeky? ..."

Wikipedia and others attribute this phrase to Al Capone and the "loose" voting regulations in Chicago, but an Irish colleague told me it was a common expression there, when ballot box stuffing was the norm (don't remember the period... sorry.) Can anyone confirm?

message 120: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) There were references to voter fraud in "Gangs of New York", but that probably isn't the definitive evidence you were looking for. ;)

THe polls are now closed. Thanks to everyone for voting!!!

Your winners are:
(no big suprise since they were leading from the get-go)

The Woman in White for your classic pick
and
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies for our reg fiction.

Happy shopping to those who need to run out and grab em before the start of the month. (Borders sent out a 40% off coupon just in the nick of time!)

I must be the last person who hasn't read Pride & Prejudice yet even though I have 2 copies on my bookshelf. Is it truly necessary to have read it if I plan on reading P&P and Zombies?

message 135: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm a little afraid to read P&P&Z, what if I can no longer think of Lizzie the same way again??

It's not strictly necessary, no. It honestly truly is Pride and Prejudice...and zombies. Zombies are just a part of the landscape in the book, a problem that people have to put up with.

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments Becky wrote: "I'm a little afraid to read P&P&Z, what if I can no longer think of Lizzie the same way again??"

Well, she's still Elizabeth. She's still intelligent, tough, doesn't like Darcy through half the story, etc. But this time she's also a martial arts expert and famed zombie killer, because zombies are a fact of life in this version of the story. They didn't take away anything from who she is, they just added to it.

message 138: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Yes... that's the thing.. Next time I read P&P I'm going to think of her as a badass zombie killer! LOL

message 139: by Diane (last edited May 24, 2009 07:18PM) (new)

Diane (dianedj) Great! I am really looking forward to the Woman in White. I put it on order yesterday from the library as it looked as though it would win.

As a first timer - do we read one book before the other? Is it/they discussed as we go or when finished? Thanks so much!

Kris - I haven't read Pride and Predudice either!

message 140: by Yvonne (new)

I haven't read Pride and Prejudice either. I thought I was the only person on Earth. Now I know there are 2 of us.

Diane, you can read either one. On the first of the month, I open two threads for each book, one spoiler and one with no spoilers.... you can read at your leisure... and comment as you go, or wait to discuss until your done!!

I havent read P&P either.... I broke my classical victorian cherry with Wuthering Heights and really struggled to get into it... I dont think I could handle any others any time soon (gulp)

message 143: by Turner (new)

Turner | 34 comments I just finished reading The Woman in White for class, so I'll be able to devote myself fully to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which I've been wanting to read for a little while now. I only hope that it's good and that it doesn't ruin the story for me!

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I have never read Pride and Prejudice either, but own it and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I don't know which one to read first. I'm thinking that if I read P&P&Z first and like it, then I'll be more into P&P, but at the same time I'm thinking that I'll probably like the zombie element way too much and won't be that into P&P since it's sans zombies. Eh, I'll probably think about this a bit more to decide which to read first.

And let me just add a YAY! that The Woman in White one. This was my first time nominating a book (I was too shy to do it before), so it was a bit encouraging that the book I nominated won the first time out.

message 148: by Susan C (new)

Susan C (somersetpurplegmailcom) Alibris has 10 new paperback copies of P&p&Z for 6.27 plus shipping. This is cheaper than Amazon, Better World Books and Books A Million.

Hope this is a help to some of you!
