That it - thanks so much!!! This book has been eluding me for years. :)
It was about a girl (who I think was called Tara James) who meets a guy the first day she starts college as a freshman (he is a bit older). They hit it off right away but he distances himself when his girlfriend returns to college from a holiday (I think the girlfriend's name is DeeDee and she has bright platinum blonede hair and is rich). The boy and his girlfriend make Tara's life a bit of a misery, making fun of her etc. so Tara is not happy when she is paired with him for a social studies project.
Tara and her best friend are supposed to be going home for break to Tara's (she lives on a farm in Wisconsin and has four brothers). Tara gets caught up with the boy interviewing someone at a shelter (she is supposed to be meeting up with her friend to travel to her home for the holiday). They get caught in a snowstorm and are forced to spend the night at her best friend's house (her best friend and her parents are not home) rather than spending it overnight in his frozen car. Tara is sick but the boy takes care of her and they set up a den in the living room to keep warm in front of the fire. They make hot chocolate/s'mores etc. He explains to Tara that he still has feelings for her but didn't want to hurt his girlfriend and was nasty to her to throw his girlfriend off the scent. They end up kissing and hugging all night.
The next day her friend and her parents return and it turns out that Tara has pneumonia. She is sent home to recuperate. When she returns to college, DeeDee is gloating that she and the boy are now engaged and the boy ignores Tara yet again. She feels foolish for trusting him. (view spoiler)[At the end he breaks up with his girlfriend (turns out they were never engaged - DeeDee was only saying this to hurt Tara) and asks Tara for another chance. Tara is reluctant but as they are sitting in his car the radio announces another storm coming. The novel ends with Tara thinking that the weather has given them another chance! (hide spoiler)]
