No, I am mostly old school with my music though I am slowly beginning to transfer my LPs to my iTunes (I have already converted all my CDs and then lost it when my iPod crashed)...

Oh, no, I'm so sorry about your iPod! Mine is like an arm to me. There's not much I won't listen to, and the weirder, the better. There's this Scottish nad that play salsa mucis by mixing tropical instruments and bagpipes. Their name is Salsa Céltica and their songs are brilliant for dancing.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Leslie, I've been thru my iPod crashing and losing all my music. It was pretty chronic, as like you, I have stuff transferred over from LPs and even cassettes.

Yes, it was awful and I have been hesitant to go through all that again. Unfortunately, I had deleted most of the files on the computer because they were taking up so much room so if I do decide to try the modern age again, I will have to re-import all my music :(

It is just such fun! I know that part of my fondness for this music started with the fact that I love the musicals of the 1930s & 40s -- Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, etc.

message 207: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 756 comments I had a huge crush on Gene Kelly when I was little. Singing In The Rain is one of my all time favorite movies. I used to watch all those old musicals with my Mom. One of my prized possessions is the album, Judy Garland Live At Carnegie Hall. My mother introduced me to all kinds of music. I get my love of Classical music from her. She used to have 78 rpm albums of Enrico Caruso. Unfortunately, I think they got thrown out years ago.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Ruth, I think that you and I would match up as far as musical tastes go. My parents were opera buffs and my Dad had also collected 78rpms of the great tenors/sopranos since he was young. So I grew up on that music. Likewise Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire etc movies. I was born in mid 60s so also heard all the 60s/70s music from older siblings. My sister says my iPod playlists are 'schizophrenic'.

message 210: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 756 comments Bette I was born in the mid 50's and the music of the 60's and 70's was what I grew up on. I love the music of Motown - The Temptations, Marvin Gaye etc. Though I have to say, I hated Disco music. I was glad when punk music came out.

You and me both, Ruth! I am a bit younger than you but had that same reaction to disco & "Saturday Night Fever". Though I do have a soft spot for Sister Sledge's "We Are Family" for some reason... I don't even have any sisters!

message 212: by Nefeli (new)

Nefeli (galacticon) | 53 comments I love rock, and especially alternative rock. I don't usually listen to music while reading since I sing along to the song and can't focus on the book :p

Hi Leslie! I just saw your message. I like all kinds of bluegrass - traditional and progressive! I'm on the Board of the Southwest Traditional & Bluegrass Music Association here in New Mexico. We bring in all kinds of groups, which has exposed me to some amazing artists like the Gibson Brothers, Claire Lynch, and Frank Solivan. The first bluegrass concert I went to, before I was a fan, was in the early 90s when I saw Bela Fleck, among others, at Telluride. That's when I got hooked!

I saw Bela Fleck and the Flecktones in concert and they were absolutely amazing. It's one thing to hear someone play an instrument and it's another to hear a master play one.

While I listen to mostly Symphony Hall and Siriusly Sinatra, I'm not a stranger to Bluegrass Junction either.

message 217: by Brooke (new)

Brooke (brooked13) | 53 comments I'm all over the place. I listen to a lot of country, like Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, and Raelynn, and the other half of would be movie sound tracks. Randy Edelman especially is one of my favorite composers as well as soundtracks from musicals :)

message 218: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) I love the Beatles, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Metallica.

That's just under a quarter of the total number. :)

Currently playing: the always lovely Kate Rusby's Sweet Bells

message 224: by Karin (last edited Dec 16, 2019 02:03PM) (new)

Karin Wow, such a question. I don't have any one genre where I can say I love or like it all, BUT here are some where I tend to like a fair bit

"Classical" (as in Baroque, Classical, Romantic, etc, but I am not equally keen on each of these eras and there is a fair bit of boring stuff in some of that)

Traditional Peruvian mountain Music (had a friend introduce me to this in university)

Christian rock (some)

Traditional Icelandic songs from before 20th Century--mostly choral and also I'm a big fan of Bára Grímsdóttir

A number of lesser known artists, such as Canadian singer-songwriter Terry Kelly (not sure how you'd classify his stuff), American Christian singer-songwriter Geno Meldrum

Tim Hawkins' funny songs

This is a very, very incomplete list and I know I'm missing a bunch of things. I am more of a "I love this piece/song" than a "I love type x kind of music" but there are some types of music I tend to dislike most of the time.

Does Inti-Illimani fit into the trad Peruvian mountain music genre?

Oh by the way, Happy Birthday Beethoven!

Perhaps not. Down to 140 songs at 6 hrs and 36 mins listening time left. :)

message 228: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 554 comments I like soul music from the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. I listen to old Black gospel music. Also hippie music from the 60s and 70s and classic rock/disco music from the 70s. I sometimes listen to classical music (romantic, late romantic).

It's a different style, but cool! Some of the instruments are the same, so they might not sound really different, but the overall styles are but with a bit of overlap. Notice (and in Chile it might be the same) the combination of traditional and Spanish instruments. I wish I could find a good one with ocarina (I love the ocarina played well). Or anything from the LP I bought by Sukay that was never put onto cassette or CD as it has traditional music only.

Here's a song from an Inca Son https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtVGH... that is also on the CD I just bought of theirs

Okay. So you don't like any music? That is rare, but of course there have to be people like that. We are very much into music around here :)

Anyway, that was a joke that I was making about the tin whistle!
