Hillary (eledri) | 24 comments Yes, this is part of a series. The second is The Dead-Tossed Waves (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #2) by Carrie Ryan

Now you know!

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Won't there be a third one as well?? I could have sworn I'd heard that somewhere.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Yep there will be a 3rd. It's in my To Read list.

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Thanks Hillary. I like her titles, especially the last one. They're so gloomy.

Amanda (snugshelf) I loove the titles also. I thought those were sort of companion novels? Cause the second one is about Mary's daughter I believe, (it's very possible I'm wrong though, I just skimmed through the description) so you wouldn't reallly have to read the first one.

Read the ARC, loved it. But this was also before the big zombie craze hit out there, so the market wasn't over saturated just yet. Tho luckily how the story and themes are treated make it stand out from the rest. I don't think you'll be disappointed :)

...and I can totally agree with much of the thoughts in this thread. I hated her, I loved her, but I was rather engaged throughout the reading.

Rach (pagesofpiper) (piperbunny) When I finished it today, I marked it down with 5 stars but I have mixed opinions on it. I liked it, a weird dystopian/fantasy story. A bit gory in places but I'm glad I read it. I loved the bits with the numbers and how the two different mini villages grew separate. I kinda expected it to be a big brother is watching you to see how you will survive against the zombies. I also liked the fact that the author wasn't scared of killing of main characters.

The character of Mary was very self-indulgent, but I loved how her faith was the ocean and how she got there in the end.

I've skipped over comments here about the second books, I really want to read it.

A few things about the book I really wanted to know, was her mum still out there somewhere? What happened to the sisterhood? How will Harry, Jacob and Cass survive? What happened to Jed? Why was Gabrielle so fast? Had they eveolved differently?

I hope these questions are answered in the next two books :)

Cassie: "-Didn't quite understand how Mary always avoided being bitten. Does she just taste bad? "
Haha :D

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I liked it. Mary annoyed me a bit that her dreams came before everything and everyone else, but I also understood that she felt stifled.

Just because a book is sad or depressing doesn't make it bad. I'd rather read a book that doesn't have a happy ending but interests me, over one that ends happy but is boring. I wouldn't be able to read this kind of story as a main staple, but every once in a while it's good to mix it up.

Kristen (k10bentley) I really disliked it. I picked it up as a "if you like The Hunger Games..." selection, but I HATED it. However, I read it to the end, because I was waiting for something to happen. There is a companion book to it, but I just can't bring myself to read it.

Tony Bertauski (jadedreader) | 22 comments Of all the book threads I've followed in this group and YA Sci-fi and Fantasy, there's never been a character so universally despised as Mary. I cut her a break. Her brother was a prick, her mother eaten by zombies and the nuns were old school nuns.

That said, I still didn't care for the book. Won't go to the second one.

I guess there isn't a Twilight thread then haha :)

I'm the oddball who didn't hate Mary. But I'd just gone through a death and all the grief (heck does that ever go away) when I read the book so I understood where she was coming from, selfishness and all, more than most.

I have a 12 year old daughter. I'm not allowed to have bad opinions about any Twilight character. Or Justin Beiber.

But that doesn't mean you can't:

Hahah love their group picture thing! Maybe he's born with it... Maybe it's Maybelline.
But yeah, I'm not exactly a hater, I just don't think they're the most awesome books in the entire universe!!!!1111. I read and mostly enjoyed them, but Bella is a pretty bad character. And definitely not someone I would want a bunch of preteens looking up to.

Emily Northcutt (emilydnorthcutt) | 2 comments I don't recall hating Mary when I read "Forest" well over a year and a half ago. She obviously had her own priorities, but I prefer characters to not always be ideal human beings. The way I saw it, she was making whacked-out choices in a whacked-out world and I was interested in seeing what happened to her.

However, when I listened to "Dead-Tossed" I was very close to hating Gabry. I'm not entirely sure whether it was the character itself or the narrator of the audiobook or a combination of the two, but her whininess was almost too much for me to take. It takes a lot for me not to finish a book, but I almost didn't get through that one. I found that disappointing after having enjoyed "Forest" so much. Maybe I should go back and read "Dead" to see for sure.

In general, girls who spend all their time whining about boys has always irked me. Yes, I'm talking to you, Bella Swan. I enjoyed reading the Twilight books myself, but I always liked Bella the LEAST. The secondary characters were more interesting than the main ones.

Evelyn | 13 comments I was kind of in two minds about the book. I found Mary's teen angst a bit wearying at times, but it did make the character a very believable teenage girl. Sometimes the repetition of certain words/phrases got a bit irritating. I was really intrigued about certain aspects of the story, then a bit annoyed when a lot of my questions weren't answered by the end of the book, but maybe the sequel covers that stuff.

There was one particular scene that I found incredibly creepy (the one involving a baby). It haunted me.

Possible slight spoiler-
Gabrielle's jacket (the fabric and colour) suggested that there was still heavy industry/manufacturing going on outside the village, which made me wonder if there was an outside world out there that was totally fine and that this village within the fence was either a forgotten relic or some kind of experiment. Apparently not though. I found that a bit disapointing.

Ameris (snap228) | 13 comments I enjoyed this book, but it wasn't one of the best I've read. I finished it, obviously (which for me is saying something, if I'm not feeling a book, the rest of it goes unread) but the characters fell kind of flat for me, and I thought the plot was mediocre, while the concept was interesting.

My biggest memory from this book was sitting in the car reading it while waiting to pick up a friend from his dorm. I was in the middle of one of her harrowing fights with the zombies while, unbeknownst to me, my friend, seeing me engrossed in my book, decided to play a prank on me by throwing himself against the side of the car. It was a very precarious battle and the scene itself was a bit creepy (it was night), and I was more than a little anxious for our brave heroine. So there I was, reading about Mary, in the thick of battle with these zombies, and all I heard was BOOM as my friend threw himself, full force, against my clunker of a car. Needless to say I jumped quite high.

Stormi (StormReads) (bmreviewsohmy) I started to read this book and then I was like oh.. this is like a zombie book..blah..so I took it back to the library. I am just not really a huge zombie fan though it did sound interesting..maybe someday I will try it again.
