BethyMac I am new to being a librarian and still haven't figured out how to update covers, I now know you have to created an additional edition but still not sure on how to do that so looking to see if there is a librarian that will do it for me then maybe I can see how it should look and be done. Here are the books that need to have cover updated, it's already been done on Amazon, so I have left GR and Amazon links. Also I have the actual picture files from the author that I can send. Help is greatly appreciated

Book #2

thank you
Beth

Susie (dragonsusie) | 2469 comments Hey,

The way it's done here is that you don't update the covers but create a new edition (new book) with the new cover and a note to say that it's an alternative cover edition of the other book. Every edition of a book is valid, whether it is a different cover or a different ISBN/ASIN.

Once you've created the new book, you can combine it with the other editions of the same book. Then, if I'm creating an alternative cover edition, I go back in to edit and add a librarian note to say this (at the top).

The books are here:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18...
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18...

The second one was easier as I noticed that the edition that was already on here on Goodreads is actually the paperback, whilst the one you gave me is the Kindle edition (difference between ISBN and ASIN - ISBN is used for physical books and ASIN for Kindle/ebooks). Although it may be that at one point you will want to add the alternative covers for both the ebook and the paperback, so just ask if you need any more help with it.

Whatever you do, you do not delete covers of works that have already been published.

BethyMac I just noticed when you look them up they still show the original covers, but I noticed other books when you look them up show new covers, how do you get them to show the new covers

You cannot. Only the author can do that.

Remind them that these groups exist precisely so that authors and members can ask for such changes to be made. Generally speaking (not pointing at you), librarians should avoid, um, 'private jobs' for authors at least until they have a good deal of experience in determining when they are being asked to do something that is not absolutely in line with Goodreads rules.

BethyMac thanks and well the author mentioned she was looking for help and I was looking to learn how to be able to do these things being new, so that was why I offered to help her, I am still in the learning process and trying to understand what a librarian can and cannot do

That is fine. But some(a lot?) of private requests have resulted in the loss of librarian privileges. Post their requests here and you will learn from the army of librarians that work here.

Did you tell the author you were a new librarian?

yes I did, I told her i would try to figure it out or get help from another librarian as I wanted to start trying to learn how to do things and figured this was one way I could

It is a great way to learn. Just be careful with private requests. It is as easy for an author to post a request here, in front of hundreds of librarians and super-librarians and even a few staffers, as it is to PM someone. Ask yourself 'why have they done that'. Frequently there will be no problem. Sometimes there is. A useful trick is to search the threads and see if the request has already been made and perhaps refused. That will often trigger a private approach.
