I LOVE TEXT TO SPEECH! I've never heard of anyone using it! I've heard of people using audiobooks, but never really anyone else who uses text to speech and I use it ALL the time! If my eyes are tired, if I'm showering, etc. I find that I get so much more read when I also listen to books. One night I was up doing stuff on the computer and I finished a book because I was listening to it at the same time. I had no idea how much extra reading time I could have if I also use text to speech!

I use it all the time. Everyone asks how do I read so much and that is why. Need to cook, pop it on the audio and continue listening, need to fold laundry, just listen... heck I don't even have to stop reading if I need to go to the bathroom. LOL

message 3703: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 4239 comments I've only had maybe a handful of books that weren't compatible with the text to speech too even with the ARCs we get.

Doesn't it sound robotic?

Also is that only with the Kindle Fire? Because I'm looking into a Paperwhite.. Can you guys try and describe the different types of Kindles for me?

message 3705: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 4239 comments It does a bit but believe me it's easy to get used to. I switched mine to the male voice and liked it much better.

And as far as I know the text to speech is only on the various Fire devices. A Fire is basically a tablet with all the option of downloading apps, email, web browsing etc etc. If you tend to read in the dark, laying in bed etc they are great since the screen lights up which some of the others don't do. The paperwhite I believe is more of just a basic e-reader.

message 3706: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 4239 comments Ok, looked it up and the Paperwhite does light up so you would have that but it's just to read on. And as I said the Fire is more of a tablet with all the other options but it's not good for reading in bright sunshine etc due to screen glare. Here's a good photo to compare.....

message 3707: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 4239 comments I personally don't use mine where I ever get glare on it though so that's kind of misleading. LOL

Maddie (maddisonbruce) | 53683 comments Mod
Yeah I know most about the Paperwhite, so like the eink and glare etc. And it's back-lit which is what I need. So I think I'll still stick with the Paperwhite because I don't need any of the other additions.

@Amanda: Yeah I could get the Kindle app but I hate reading my phone

Seems kind of weird to me though to pay so much more to get so much less. But maybe that's me. LOL

How much is a Fire??

message 3711: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (boombaby13) | 4239 comments Maddison wrote: "How much is a Fire??"

The 7 which is the smallest is 49.99. I love it, fits in my pocket which makes it easy to carry around and listen. They also go on sale a few times a year for 39.

Just looked it up, and it doesn't ship to my country from Amazon -_- I think I'll still stick with the Paperwhite. I don't want anything else that could distract me XD

message 3714: by ✨Skye✨ (new)

✨Skye✨ | 3107 comments Mine is the glare-free one with no backlight at all, I prefer it way more. I used to use a tablet and the light gave me a headache if I read for too long xD

Yeah, I know a few people that can't take looking at the lit screen but for me I love reading in bed with the light off so I don't have to get back up and turn it off. Used to read on my phone when I was using one of the original Kindles which didn't light up and thought what's the point of having it if I never use it and use my phone anyway. LOL

I have a fire that is like a tablet too. I think mine is bigger than yours Carrie, it doesn't fit in my pocket, that's for sure. I used to have a paperwhite though and DEFINITELY see the appeal. For a long time I didn't have my computer though, and used my tablet for everything. Now it's mostly for books. I used to turn off Wi-fi though so I wouldn't get distracted.

I don't really know how they work exactly, but I think they do get randomly granted. Let me ask my Netgalley Readers group

Wishes are supposed to be a completely random draw instead of the publisher accepting/approving through a request. However, I kind of question how "random" they are when I always get my wishes granted from St. Martin's who always approves me but rarely ever get any from other publishers.
