Zizz I totally fell in love with this story. But am I the only one who had issues with the characters?
1. The more I think about it, Jake's an ass. And getting his POV only made it worse. So he still loves her yet he see's no hope for him so he keeps his girlfriend? And behind her back, he tries to spend as much time with Charley? I was already mad at him to begin with. What was he thinking - going to Edinburgh knowing she was going to be there and brandishing his new girlfriend around?!
2. I loved Charley but I was just waiting for her to move on. It got to a point that I wanted to slap some sense into her because she just kept hanging around.

Brittani Yeah...I agree..something not sitting well with me about Jake. The book ended well enough but we didn't get that scene where he did choose Charley over Melissa ...just him saying next time he would. And what Was he doing with Melissa until 2 am in the morning. I want to like Jake and believe him but he has "player" written all over him...anddd I don't know why this stood out to me but at the end where she was like "so I guess we're done taking it slow" he laughed..no yeah or anything....I didnt like that...ugh. I just have a feeling that he's not quite done with Melissa... So that ending imo wasn't enough for me. Great book :)

Zizz Hey Brit. Yup great book!
But I just wanted to smack Jake for going to Edinburgh with a new gf and trying to re-build a friendship with her. It's totally trying to have the best of both worlds. If he realized he was in love still with Charley, why didn't he leave Melissa then? It sounded to me like he saw no hope so might as well settle for what he had now. That's such a d*ck move.
It got to a point that I wanted to smack Charley around too. It got very masochistic to me. How about looking for a new life. Even Claud started dating someone outside of that group.

well there is book 2 and maybe we get answers there

I was wondering if I was the only one who thought the 2 AM thing was messed up. I don't care how "nice" you were trying to be, taking off, not saying a thing, no text, nothing. I would have been livid.

.chel. I totally agree with all of you. I hated how Jake flaunted his relationship around Charley, and at the same time strung Melissa around when he knew he still loved Charley. He totally did both girls wrong. And that whole 2am thing was so messed up. He knew he had to try and gain Charley's trust back and he does that? Doesn't even have the audacity to call/text her back.

I wanted Charley to date Lowe. He seemed really into her. I think he would have treated her better.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

OMGOSH me too! I was rooting for Lowe at one point, but I realized it would be so futile as they would never be together.

Not a great fan of Jake but I also got the impression that it wasn't his original intention to flaunt Mel. He simply never abandoned the idea of attending the study abroad program, and it was only regrettable that he had been dating Mel when he arrived there. And if you can tell from my review...not a fan of Mel.
..at all.

YelleOh You are sooo...right ladies I was rooting for Lowe too!!. If it were up to me I'd want Charley to move on and explore the possibilities with Lowe. And Jake could go fart himself for all I care, he was such an asshole and being insensitive towards Charley's predicament. I mean the guy bailed out of their relationship, and then had the guts to flaunt Melissa and then asked Charley (who was supposed the be the one) to be his friend again while he's in a new relationship?!?. I mean WTF dude?!?! so not cool.

But I really loved the book though and it was a fast read, let's wait and see if Jake will redeem himself on the next book in his own POV I need answers.

Angie Elle I didn't think Jake was flaunting Melissa in front of Charley. If he had been, I don't think he would have felt so awkward.

I do think he made a lot of mistakes, but they're young and learning. I think their biggest obstacle (especially Charley's) is going to be communicating their feelings in the future. When Jake left with Melissa and didn't come home, her first instinct was to run. And I can't say that I blame her, but she's going to have try and overcome her habit of running and avoiding if they're going to make things work.

Shannon This is the way I see the whole thing.

Jake never stopped loving Charley, I think he went to Edinburgh to hopefully see Charley again. I think he believed that just being near her was enough. He knew she was his "one" he had Melissa because she made him feel better, she helped him forget, but I don't think she ever helped him forget Charley.

He wasn't rubbing it in her face, he assumed she would have had moved on, he thought he would never stand a chance with her ever again.

Jake will redeem himself, BUT I have a feeling we have not seen the last of Melissa, I don't know if she will turn up pregnant or something crazy or if it will turn out that Melissa is tied to Bretts dad some how, but she will be an issue for these two in the next book.

Angie Elle I really hope it's not a pregnancy scare. I hate those. It can ruin a whole book or series.

I don't mind them if they are fake, or not the H's

message 13: by Zizz (new) - rated it 5 stars

Zizz It's been two months since they broke up. It's too late to claim a pregnancy. Unless they did something that's why he was with her until 2am.

Seed of doubt will have been planted for Charley.

Vickie*** yeah... i too had a slight problem with jake.
just the fact that he leaves his girlfriend to find his ex 2 times (first with melissa, then with charley) shows he needs to think before he reacts faster
and charley, i do respect her, but it really is masochisty to stay with her group of mutual friends, then again i guess finding another group of friends would be the "coward" way out.. idk

I agree, I am rooting for Jake and Charlie. I really hope Jake did not do anything with Melissa. Melissa kept saying that it was hard to hate Charlie but I am not a fan of Melissa's at all!

message 17: by Karine (last edited Aug 23, 2013 05:27PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Karine I honestly like Melissa and Charley ; they are both good people at heart who unfortunately care for the same guy. Think about it : Melissa saw a broken boy in Jake and wanted to help him get better. What I think is unfair is how Jake treats both of them, how he goes back and forth and wants the easy way : since he can't have Charley, he'll just pretend to love Melissa and give her 'fake love'. Melissa was annoying at the end, but her reaction was pretty human. I liked Charley a lot too. JAKE is the one I didn't appreciate much, but I can see redeemable qualities, so I'm looking forward to the next book, hoping Jake won't mess up even more.
And Lowe... I was totally rooting for him at some point, but it's pretty obvious he and Charley will never be more than friends (which I think is sad, since the sexual tension between them was great - maybe even greater than the one between Jake and Charley)

Shelley Glad to know I wasn't the only one that was somewhat rooting for Lowe to end up with the girl. Not sure how I feel about Jake and Charley. Will have to wait and see in the next book I guess.

Karin I liked this book. Charley became really annoying and overbearing for me at multiple points. jake kind of became an ass as he was totally leading Melissa and charley on. I totally fell for lowe. Charley should of taking a chance on him!

Shannon I liked Lowe, but he didn't have enough of a part in the book to make me "fall" for him. No one is ever happy with a book. I don't understand why.

Cindy I loved this book, can't wait for the next one. Too bad it's in 2014..booo

Hey listen Shannon, to each their own. Isn't this this whole point of these blogs sites, being able to voice your own opinion. Yikes!

Jen I was totally frustrated with Jake in this book. But, I did feel like the bonus chapter with his POV helped a little. At least we knew he was still in love with Charley. And based on his conversation with Charley he really did not think she wanted him back. I buy that. However, him telling Charley that he "loved" Melissa. Hated that. Later the author tries to say "love" and "in love" are nto the same thing. I get that too. I have loved guys I wasn't in love with. But, what I did not think worked here was he didn't do or say enough to Charley to convey that. There better be alot more convincing from Jake in the next book. Charley still seemed awfully unsure of him at the end of Into the Deep. It will be interesting to see what the author does in the next book that brings Charly back "into the deep" with Jake.

Sabrina I thought the book was great...no one is perfect and people make mistakes and that's what I think we got with Jake. he never imagined that Charley would still love him and he was trying to move on and when he saw her he new he was still in love her. he realized that he loved her still and broke up with Melissa. I loved the story and can't wait for the next one

message 25: by Yuyu (new) - rated it 5 stars

Yuyu I love the book. I just couldnt deal with Jake playing both sides. And i think Melissa was kind of a bitch the whole conversation about knowing him and i think the whole 2 am situation was completely inappropriate. He couldnt go back in and tell Charley hey im going to walk her home? which in its self wrong. He put Melissa before Charley at all moments. Even the whole being respectful... he and melissa were not respectful in front of Charley. I understand that jake was young and it was a terrible thing but he was selfish. The guy died in her arms too. I guess im just not a fan of jake and hope she finds someone who deserves Her. His POV kind of bothered me when he compared her to claud... oh well lets see.

Fm Agree, Jake's behaviour was annoying. I'm totally addicted to these NA/YA Romance novels but the way the women are treated in most of them is pretty terrible, emotionally abusive and should never be tolerated in real life. Hopefully young girls reading these books enjoy them for what they are but never look at the relationships in them as something they'd like in their own life.

message 27: by Jen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jen That's a good point FM. On the one hand it takes an awesome writer to invoke emotions. But on the other hand I could really feel Charly's emotions. While I don't think Jake is meant to be purposely hurtful... the dialogue from others in the book - the father scene, the friends dialogue could suggest emotional abuse. It would have been better to have Jake's POV. In SY's other books the topic wasn't so angsty so the H POV wasn't really that necessary. I'm hopeful the next book resolves all the open issues in their relationship. Although, the spoiler scene SY just posted didn't help me empathize with Jake at all.

Sthep YESS! The reason why I disliked this book was because of the characters. Charley couldn't move on even when Jake was an ass and that made me mad. I hated Melissa even when she wasn't a bad person, and even when *SPOILER* they stayed together at the end, it felt so wrong, cause he's an ass who cannot face his troubles. And Charley, I liked her but I got so frustrated. I kind of wanted them to end up together but it felt so wrong and I hate Jake, he's selfish and stupid and I hate him so much.
But anyway, that's just my opinion.

Jen Just wanted to let everyone on the thread know that SY released more snippets of Jakes POV in the book that will totally change your mind about him and you find out some not so nice things about Melissa!

Sonia Jen wrote: "Just wanted to let everyone on the thread know that SY released more snippets of Jakes POV in the book that will totally change your mind about him and you find out some not so nice things about M..."

I was about to say the same thing! Books that are only from one character's POV make me suspend judgement only because if the author doesn't explain what happened we never really know the truth. The new POV that SY released shed a lot of light on where Jake's head was at, and I really liked that. I may not agree with what Jake did/didn't do but I did get where he was coming from. :)

message 31: by Zizz (new) - rated it 5 stars

Zizz The funny thing is that it took SY 3 attempts at Jake's POV to finally get it right for me. I think she knows that he's not exactly popular with a few people and she's trying to make us understand him. It took turning Melissa into this passive-aggressive/underhanded villain to get me to like Jake. Did you manage to read his POV2 when he got together with Melissa? He told her he loved her. He felt all tingly and all with her. My friend and I were discussing it when she posted it and we agreed that Jake is digging a hole further for himself! But I guess this is all over and done with, from the blurb for Out of the Shallows, it sounds like Jake is going to have his work cut out for him.

message 32: by Jen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jen Zzz: I think you are spot on. Many people did not care for Jake and that first POV with telling Melissa he loved her did not help but I read everyone's comments on it and I wouldn't be surprised if that's why SY gave us those other POVs making it that Melissa manipulated Jake to stay with her. Basically implying that they would have broken up much sooner. To be fair Jake does admit in ITD that while did love Melissa he realized he wasn't in love with her. At this point with all the backlash on Jake it almost needed the making Melissa look bad to change readers minds.
