SOLVED. About a young man having a gay relationship with his professor and ends up trying to murder him [s]

Hi I am trying to remember a book I read years ago. Its starts in the UK, a young man starts an affair with an older lecturer/professor, he is male also. the young guy isnt "out" yet and is unsure of his sexual feelings. the professor goes on some sort of expedition involving a ship visiting various islands. The young guy has arranged to meet up with him at one of the stopffs. Flies to whatever exotic country, meets the professor's sister, falls in love with her, then keeps the rendezvous with the professor and meets him on the ship. cant get the sister out of his mind, feels trapped and ends up leaving the professor (which means a pretty sure death) on a deserted island. Its such a good read, and I never got to the end of it as I was reading it at a friends house and left it there.(None of my friends have any recollection of this!)
