If remade into another movie, heaven forbid, who do you think would play Rhett Butler?

Maria Hugh Jackman is a great choice. Also Johnny Depp.

Hugh Jackman is a good choice. But I just can't see Johnny as Rhett Butler. He is definitely a good actor, but he doesn't have the gravitas to play a scoundrel. However, I could see Johnny in the role of Ashley.

Netta Henry Cavill (swoon) as Rhett, and Jenna Dewan Tatum as Scarlett. JDT is a pretty good physical match to the book description - dark hair, green eyes, and a square chin - and she's less physically perfect than VL (although still very pretty, of course), which fits into the opening line of the book.

Kate George Clooney.

message 355: by Kate (new) - added it

Kate After reading through the thread, (some comments were hilarious btw) a lot of you made good points about other actors such as Karl Urban (who could definitely pull off the roll as far as looks) and Johnny Depp (who has the looks and the acting ability) and Gerard Butler for the role of Rhett. People say George Clooney is too old to play Rhett, perhaps they are right, but in my opinion Clark Gable sure didn't look 35 in GWTW.

As far as Scarlett, we're all readers here, not the typical person who "knows" her only from the movie and thinks she was this gorgeous creature that the world came to know. "Scarlett O'Hara was not beautiful, but men seldom realized it when caught by her charm..." Obviously she was pretty, but not Vivien Leigh stunning. It would still be hard to cast her. It'd be as much about acting ability with a role as important as Scarlett.

Dana Colin Farrell?

Gabriela Robert Downey Jr. of course

Italia8989 ***James Franco (or Johnny Depp, I suppose): Rhett Butler
Jennifer Lawrence: Scarlett
Kristen Stuart: Melanie
Tom Felton: Ashley

I realize that this might cause some controversy....

message 359: by Carla (new) - rated it 5 stars

Carla Peele Ok, Bruce Campbell has the swagger to be Rhett. Swagger is TANTAMOUNT here. There is also Ian Sommerholder. But, for our Miss Scarlett? Mila Kunis has the looks AND the acting chops.

message 360: by Carol (new)

Carol Omg...very one forget Matthew McConaghy as Brett!!

message 361: by Donna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Donna I definitely think Johnny Depp is the best choice. I like the idea of George Clooney, but I do think he looks too old, and I think Ian Somerholder could nail the part, but doesn't look like Rhett in my mind.

message 362: by Donna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Donna Oh, I forgot...Derek Hough should be Ashley.

message 363: by Anna (new)

Anna Devane Jerry Seinfeld as Rhett. Elaine Benis as Scarlett. George Costanza as Ashley. Newman as Mammy.

Carol For sure Matthew Mcconoughy as Rhett

Joyce Fiddle-dee dee! Definitely Brad Pitt (10 years ago) as Rhett and Angelina Jolie (also 10 years ago, maybe 15) as Scarlett. Exes Jonny Lee Miller as Ashley Wilkes and the long-suffering Jennifer Aniston as the long-suffering Mrs. Wilkes (Melanie).

Teresa Matt Bomer

message 373: by Jenny (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jenny Sturgill Gone with the Wind is my favorite novel of all time, I've read it close to 20 times. It is very difficult to imagine anyone who could pull off Rhett the way Gable did. When you read GWTW, it's almost like the written description of his character was written specifically for Gable.

With that said, I have a difficult time really thinking of a current actor who is talented enough and has the natural charm and cockiness and smoothness about about him to act out the duality in Rhett's character...

If I had to think of someone...perhaps Kiefer Sutherland. He's older and versatile and if his hair was changed he could possibly pull it off. Alexander Skarsgard with Black Hair. Hugh Jackman isn't too detrimental of an idea...When I consider Johnny Depp from movies like Public Enemies, he could possibly pull it off. Josh Brolin...

message 374: by Maria (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maria The actress who plays Scarlett has to be beautiful.

Reese Witherspoon, with that jimmy-jawed underbite does not qualify!

Kiri Fiona If we have to see a remake, I'd want to see Gerard Butler, Michael Fassbender, or Cilian Murphy as Rhett.

Would love Cillian Murphy as Rhett! or Colin Farrell.

I was thinking Katie McGrath for Scarlett. Ryan Gosling for Ashley.

Altair IV Olivia, like you I would not want to see a remake. I would consider it a waste of film. However, if there was a remake I would not want anyone to play Rhett. I would take him out of the story. In my opinion the only essential character is Scarlett and clearly to me not Rhett. Some examples: At the Bazaar I do not believe that a woman with Scarlett’s character would have needed Rhett or any man to bring her out of “mourning” and eventually openly have fun. Then fleeing Atlanta, while Scarlett believed Sherman’s army was burning the entire city that was not the case. Had it not been for Rhett Scarlett, Melanie, Prissy and the children would have had a very horrifying night, but they would have survived. Again I believe that a woman with Scarlett’s determination and courage would have found a way to get to Tara with all those under her care. Then there is the Klan raid. The story doesn’t require that the members of the raid had to go free. Some may have been arrested, some may have fled and some may have found their own alibis. To me the least interesting part of the story is after Scarlett marries Rhett. At the end of the book it’s stated that “She [Scarlett] could get Rhett back. She knew she could.” At that point it is not stated that Scarlett would get him back or wanted to get him back. To me this story is about a strong and courageous woman who does not need a man to survive. Rhett weakens this storyline and weakens Scarlett, he tries to tear Scarlett down and bend her to his will and I don’t like him. Scarlett is much less independent when he is around.

Altair IV,

Well Margaret Mitchell did not have the perspective of someone living in the year 2018.

message 380: by Altair (new)

Altair IV Joyce thanks for reading my comment and replying. You make a good point saying that “Well Margaret Mitchell did not have the perspective of someone living in the year 2018” and I’m sure many people like Rhett, but I don’t. This doesn’t mean I don’t like the book. Along with those by Jane Austen, GWTW is among my favorites. I’ve read it twice so far and will most likely read it again.

To all, I would like to read other people’s thoughts about this comment and kindly read and comment on my other comments: “Race” and GWTW, What would Melanie have said? and Thoughts on Gone With The Wind . . .” They are more positive.

Jean Dujardin (The Artist) was the first actor that came to mind when I read your question. Not only does he have "old Hollywood" good looks but I feel he is the modern version of how Margaret Mitchell described Rhett. But do you think if they remade it they would try to modernize it in some way or would they just try to rip off the original from 1939?

message 388: by Barton (new) - rated it 5 stars

Barton Weese Aiden Turner from Poldark would be an excellent Rhett!

message 389: by Dana (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dana Benedict Cumberbatch

message 390: by Hoyt (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hoyt W.C. Timothy Dalton was really good, I thought. He played Rhett in the movie adaptation of Scarlett. Sometimes when I read the books, i see him as Rhett.
