I very much liked the idea of a child name that one drops on reaching adulthood. The name that parents think of upon making the acquaintance of a newborn does not always suit the adult. I also hugely enjoy the idea of keeping one's true name a secret, and picking up nicknames that suit places and occasions. I dislike introducing myself by name. Names, for me, are way down the list, after the "feel" of a new person, and getting to know them for awhile. Names do carry power, and a person can use another person's name as a weapon against them by filling it with scorn. Descriptive names, nicknames, do not have that power. Not having the connection of true names makes it easier to let or send a person out of one's life, if that is necessary. Exchanging true names would have a bonding power and significance that can't exist when names are used and given casually.
