I am looking for a book that is set in the middle east. I read it a few years ago and it's set in around the 17th century. The story is about a girl who is taken as a concubine for the ruler and is then freed by one of the soldiers in the palace who has been serving there for years although he is a prince from a different country and fights in their two bladed style. It's not much to go on, but some other facts are that the girl was supposed to restore balance to the world by giving birth to a god/goddess and she had messengers to help her along one of them was a eunuch who served her and another was a court jester. In the end she gives birth to twins and the main antagonist dies when he walks into the water which is the goddess's domain.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments How many years ago did you read this? Did this fall in the fantasy genre?

Remember anything about the cover?

Neil | 5 comments I read it about 2-3 years ago. No clue about the cover. As for genre it was fantasy or fiction.

Michele | 2488 comments Neil, some questions that might spark more memories: Do you recall if this was a YA book or aimed at adults? Any specific fantasy elements that you recall -- spells, magic, etc.? Do you remember anything about how long the books was (thin, medium, humungous doorstop)? When you read it 2-3 years ago, do you have any sense of whether it was new at the time or older -- for example did you pick it up in a new bookstore, used bookstore, library? Do you remember if freeing the girl happened at the end, so most of the book was about her as a concubine, or if it happened at the beginning and most of the book was her adventures after the soldier freed her? Was there a lot of fighting/military stuff in the book? Anything more about the religion/gods/goddesses aspect?

Neil | 5 comments It was actually a series each book was about 300+ pages in the beginning of the first novel the king died so his oldest son takes the throne. The girl was originally a farmers daughter I think, but the king had all beautiful women collected for his harem. Also she was to be married to the new king/prince, but she loved the foreign prince who fought with two swords. The foreign prince served as the head of the guard for the king. He won his place when he was captured as a slave and fought several of the kings soldiers at once to get his attention and win his freedom.

As for the magic I remember the court jester could use some magic to conceal his presence. Also the girl died in the end giving birth to twins after crossing a desert. Im not sure when they were written but all books were published when I started I think.
