I read a story many years ago set on Mars. A pioneer type has a wonderful female companion who makes life worth living for him, and who keeps him sane. Then the settlers get recalled to earth and the man is leaving but the female is left behind. At the end you realize the "female" is a robot and is essentially counted as luggage for the trip so he can't take her. The last scene is of the robot watching the ship take off, and I believe there were tears on her cheeks.
For years I thought this story was Helen O'Loy, but when I recently reread Helen O'Loy I realized it's very different. Anyone have any idea what this story was actually called?
