Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Knicked this off Wiil's Facebook.

What do you think?

message 2: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I *liked* the voiceover in Blade Runner, and I'm not afraid to say it.

Although I agree the tacked on happy ending sucked.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I wonder who this Wiil person is.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments If I've read - and enjoyed - the book and a film comes out later, well I don't think that there has been one that I preferred to the book.
One that I did the other way round - film before book - was Stardust. Enjoyed the film (& still do). The book is totally different, but also enjoyed that. Perhaps I should do it that way in future.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Blade Runner is possibly my favourite film.

I just love the whole feel and atmosphere, and although I like Philip K Dick's books this has to be one of the rare times the film is better.

Not sure about Interview with a vampire though.

Patti be careful. Wiil is my evil twin.

message 6: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I used to have a Wii...

Simon Jenner (simon_jenner) | 112 comments How about Carrie? Dare I say I thought the film was better than the book ...

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You may say it Simon.

You're wrong, but you may say it. :)

message 9: by Philip (sarah) (new)

Philip (sarah) Willis | 4630 comments As I mentioned in a previous thread I found the film The Exorcist terrifying. Nothing I read in the book prepared me for the scenes in the film.
We were sat in a corner of the cinema gallery only 2 seats wide so felt rather isolated and the atmosphere was chilling to put it mildly.
I slept on my friend's floor for 3 nights afterwards. I have now seen the film about 20 times and it still freaks me out.
Each time I watch it I try to analyse why it has this effect on me and the conclusion I have reached is that it has more to do with the religious aspect than the horror or paranormal. I am very drawn to the premise of good versus evil and I think this film portrays that magnificently!
Now I want to watch it again but I'll wait till I have company!

message 10: by Darren (new)

Darren Humphries (darrenhf) | 6903 comments I agree that the ending of THE MIST was shattering, but that was only a novella at best.

I do think that BLADE RUNNER is a fabulous reworking of Dick's book, but better? It's too different to be better.

I did enjoy JAWS the movie a whole lot more than the potboiler that it came from.

Oh, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix cut that rambling doorstep down to size.

Wrong??!! But what about Sissy Spacek? She really made the character for me - her breakdown came across much better in visual form (I think!). The effects for the prom scene were also spectacular for their day. And in the book, my empathy for Carrie was lost once she went too far by taking out the town. It's been a while though - maybe I need to read the book again!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments the shame is that if you do, you'll see sissy instead of the character your brain should deliver. that's what i hate about revisiting a book after I've seen the film.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments The Lord of the rings trilogy. Loved the films, but gave up half way through book 1.

Tim | 8539 comments David wrote: "The Lord of the rings trilogy. Loved the films, but gave up half way through book 1."

It took me 5 years to get beyond Rivendell. In the end I just skipped that whole chunk. To this day, there's big chunks of LOTR I just skip over - it could easily be condensed down to half its size.

Tim | 8539 comments Darren wrote: "Oh, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix cut that rambling doorstep down to size"

Yeah, but they blew it big time with Deathly Hallows. Now we have to endure every bleedin' film series having the last book split in two, whether it warrants it or not. It's bad enough Peter Jackson stretching a shortish children's story into 3 overlong films...

message 16: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Oh do not get me started on the Hobbit, totally unnecessary.

message 17: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments Love the fact they split it into two movies. The epic battle at the end is just too epic to cut down and I would of hated for it to be shortened just so the film wasn't like 4 hours long.

I much prefer the movie of Alice in Wonderland.

I agree with you about the last film, but Deathly Hallows part 1 was Harry Potter goes camping and doesn't do anything for 2 hours.

message 19: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments I never liked the first part of the book anyway so I was bound to be indifferent about the film version

Andrew Lawston (andrewlawston) | 1774 comments Dune.

Hundreds of pages about the adventures of a Messiah figure who can see the future and knows himself to be invulnerable... or Sting in leather pants.

message 21: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments I loved the soundtrack to that movie. The film itself was too chopped about, I thought.

Oh, there is so much wrong with that answer that I don't know where to start. Andrew, throw yourself into the mouth of a giant sandworm in sharme. :)

And the Dune film was crap.

Can I have another vote begging post now, please?

message 25: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Hadn't seen the movies they mentioned cos I don't get out much... but - I love the film versions and the book versions in different ways. I think they are complementary.
STILL not yet read Conrad's 'Heart of darkness' but
'Apocalypse Now' is my fave film (and, yes, it's on again tonight!)

message 26: by Andy (new)

Andy Elliott | 1446 comments Dare I say Trainspotting? Too late, I said it. I hated all of the characters in the book, but the film seemed to make them more human.

Also American Psycho. Really struggled with the book, but loved the film, same for Easton Ellis' Rules of Attraction.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Dune was just about the worst film I have ever seen, and I enjoyed the book. Series went rapidly downhill though.

Jurassic Park, defo.
The Last of the Mohicans. I have to admit to being a "Red Indian" fanatic from an early age (sorry but we're talking pre-PC here) - at the age of 4 I dressed up in my Indian Chief outfit for my birthday party whilst all the other little girls were in pretty princess outfits. I read J Fenimore Cooper very young after having seen a BBC Sunday afternoon serial. But I found the film with Daniel Day Lewis quite relentlessly gripping.
Trainspotting. One of my favourite films ever. The book isn't.
The Princess Bride? I like the book, but I think the film wins out.

message 28: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Hurray, I thought it was just me who wanted to be a Red Indian! (when I wasn't being a sheriff, that is).
Loved the film, can't remember reading the book.

Agree with The Princess Bride, but the film of Jurassic Park seemed to lose the book's bite (fnarr, fnarr). I appreciate that they were aiming for a mainstream audience, but the lack of evisceration in Spielberg's slice of popcorn fun was a bit disappointing. Hammond's story arc was also much more satisfying in the novel.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Will wrote: ""I agree with Patti, Dune was crap"

Yeah go on.

Everyone is ignoring you anyway. :D

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Lol I was NEVER the sheriff!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hmmmm.

The princess bride.

Perhaps equally as good as the book.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments And which channel is apocalypse now on tonight? Love that film.

As I watched the film I got more and more unsettled, something was missing and I just couldn't put my finger on it, but something was missing and I ended up not enjoying the film.
When it was over I wound it back and fastforwarded through it, stopping to see what it was I'd missed.
Then I realised. The English infantry don't have bayonets. They spend most of their time in close combats and don't have bayonets because holywood couldn't cope with the English men bayoneting American Indians.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Natives.

*sigh*

message 36: by Sam (last edited Aug 09, 2013 03:52PM) (new)

Sam Kates Disagree with the blogger about the ending of 'The Mist' - the film version made me laugh, which I don't think was the intended effect.

Has anyone seen 'Sharknado'? If that was based on a book and the book is worse, I'd have to read it just to say I've read the book upon which the film is based and it was even worse than the film. Nobody who's seen the film would believe me...

The TiVo box kindly recorded Sharknado the other day. I was hoping it would be a Plan 9 kinda film, so bad it's good. Is it so bad, it's unbearable?

ITV4 - forgot. Adverts. Maybe won't bother...

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments We're watching it now.

The adverts are posting in the group time. :)

I can get some satisfaction.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments This is haunting to watch after our holiday in Vietnam.

Although this was filmed in Thailand, I was told.

If you're watching it, crank up your heating. If you're not streaming with sweat, you're not getting the true experience.

I'm watching it whilst munching on an overly hot keralan curry. My upper lip is slightly moist, will that do?

Here's my FB comment on it:
Well, I've just watched one of the worst films I've ever seen, a disaster movie in every sense of the term. But it was so awful that it was unintentionally hilarious and became compulsive viewing. 'Sharknado' - watch it and weep...

message 45: by Andy (last edited Aug 09, 2013 01:44PM) (new)

Andy Elliott | 1446 comments Charlie don't surf!

Will watch Sharknado once the smell of napalm has cleared.

message 46: by Sam (new)

Sam Kates I love the smell of shark in the morning...

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments how long are these ad breaks? go on forever.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm sure that I saw photos of scenes in this film in museums. Or scenes were based on photos, more likely.

I've seen this film probably ten times, but not through these eyes.

Criminy.

message 49: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments a bit eerie cos the fireworks are going off outside for the Shrews flower show! can't smell napalm yet tho...

message 50: by Andy (new)

Andy Elliott | 1446 comments The adverts are bad enough, but that moppet banging on about Richard Curtis films doesn't do much for the atmosphere. Am going to out the DVD on from hence forth so my comments might be a bit out of sync.
