(Believe me, he's a bigger threat than The Program) I will love the next book if he dies or even better, Sloane murders him. He's sort of like that guy-Blake, I think, from the Lux series who befriends Katy and then tries to turn them all in and everything. I really wish Sloane kills Realm like Katy killed him. I'm through 6 chapters and really liking the idea behind this one.. So sad that the parents are so brainwashed and that everyone thinks suicide is contagious

Part 2 chapter 9 (view spoiler)[ I kind of knew this was going to happen.. That she was going to meet someone else in the Program.. UGH It's so messed up what Roger is doing. Part 1 Chapter 12: (view spoiler)[ This is an interesting concept but at this point I'm eager for something to happen. Judging by the title, Sloane is going to be taken in so hopefully that happens pretty soon because if it doesn't it'll start to drag way more than necessary. It's sad what happened to everyone around Sloane... She's the only one left in her group of friends and that sounds awful. I don't imagine she can make it much longer without being taken in. In fact I think they'll force her in there simply because everyone else was "infected" around her. (hide spoiler)]

Part 2 Chapter 10: (view spoiler)[ I don't really trust Realm. He seemed okay but it was pretty suspicious of him to request the pill from Sloane and then get mad when he learned she already took it. I feel like he's done this to the other girls to get the pills. Or maybe he's working with Roger so that they can sell themselves to Roger, Realm will give Roger the same pill back, then Roger can get them desperate enough to sell themselves again and the cycle continues. Part 3 Chapter 5: (view spoiler)[ I'm pretty sure Kevin is trying to keep Sloane away from James just because Realm told him to. It's interesting how they take the memories but they still tend to gravitate towards the people they share a past with. I'm actually not that into this book for some reason. It's just not that interesting for me at this point and it feels a bit draggy. (hide spoiler)]

Ch1-4. Certainly a pertinent topic when you look at the figures of teenagers with mental health issues. Not sure how comfortable I am with the idea, but I am curious to see how this is set up.

Done: (view spoiler)[ I feel like the epilogue was the best part of this whole book. It surprised me so much to learn that all those people playing cards weren't even real patients! Which begs the question... Was Sloane the only actual patient at her facility? Since the same nurse was there it must've been the same facility Sloane was at (unless they moved the nurse) so it wouldn't make sense for all those people to lie about how long they've been in there because one of the other "patients" could call them out. Part one-like the fact the couple are established before the novel, but it seems to have been a relationship born of desperation/guilt. Sloane is stronger than she seems. Think this part was fairly inevitable with regard to the ending. I'm curious to see what comes next, but I'm not convinced the explanation for this course of action is really established.

part 3 chapter 14- almost done (view spoiler)[ OK so obviously this is a total set-up/intro book for the next. I do wish we could find out more about the suicide sickness, but I'm glad Realm has so far turned out to be decent and that Sloane and James are together again. I'm a bit confused about the Kevin/Lacey thing, because it sort of just came out of left field. (hide spoiler)]

Ch1-10 of part two. An abusive regime, though people think it's in the teens' best interests. Does make me question our modern attitude to mental health issues.

End of part two. Can Realm really be trusted? Sloane is like a shell-how can the absence of feeling be an ideal state?

Finished - frustrating. Damning indictment perhaps of our current treatment of teen mental health. Curious to read part two now.

I agree about liking the established couple. It's a bit different and I think their dynamic is beneficial to surviving but also cute because they're protective of each other.

(view spoiler)[ Ok, so honestly I didn't love this book. I feel as though there was a whole lot of character building for the two main characters, but not enough action. I appreciated that we got so in depth with the backstory of the individuals, but I would also have liked more having to do with the actual suicide situation. In a way, it was scary because knowing that all the adults were complacent even though their kids would come back shells devoid of emotion and memories? Like...yuck. It is thought provoking, and makes you wonder what would happen in real life if something like this happened. (hide spoiler)]

Review: (view spoiler)[I liked this book. I felt that it really spoke to me as someone with mental health issues. But there was also a missing component that I couldn't pinpoint that prevented it from being a 5 star.

I liked Sloane and felt really bad for her. A society that doesn't let you grieve for fear of losing yourself is a society that promotes suicide.

I was sad that so many teenagers were committing suicide either by being found or by not being found.

The program seemed to be defective. I also was surprised and disgusted that someone like Roger was able to take advantage or her like that but sadly realized that probably happens a lot.

I was left wondering how the epidemic happened and why it happened. I will very likely read the next book (hide spoiler)]

I love this concept, and suicide being contagious is such an interesting idea. The fact that these are teens and they are forced to keep everything in and even encouraged to isolate those who are sad, just leads to more depression. Very interesting! (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 1-5 (view spoiler)[ Well the book is off to a good start so far. It's sad that depression is such an epidemic and how "suicide is contagious". Poor Miller in love with Lacey who may not remember him. These handlers sound intense with one wrong look it may look like you have depression. I would be paranoid every day. James is carrying the weight of keeping Miller and Sloane safe from the program as well as himself. I can't believe she burned herself just to let her cry. (hide spoiler)]

chapter 6-9 (view spoiler)[ I can't believe Miller killed himself, only 3 months and he would have been safe from the program. I hope James will get better soon, I don't want him being taken away. Him carving Miller's name into his arm was heartbreaking. Now Sloane has to stay strong for the both of them. That one handler is getting creepy now, I'm not sure how I feel about him.
