That's completely fine, I have quite a bit of time on my hands and no immediate plans for further study. At the minute all I have is my dissertation which will really only take at least a couple of hours a day.

I think it would be good to have this thread, perhaps under "book chat", and if you are happy to set it up and manage it, that would be great! Just let us know if it gets too much, though...

Not a problem, I will get it set up right away.

It doesn't fall to one person's responsibility for updates as this would obviously be a huge undertaking. Thought this might help you.

That's what I was thinking but I would have a big calendar at the top to help other members so they wouldn't have to go through the posts.

Timothy wrote: "Dely asked why I was interested opinions of non-Americans. I’ve been told that I ask too many questions and maybe this is just another instance."Thanks a lot for answering. Me too, I'm a very curious person ;D
I like your idea but I think I can't add a lot to your discussion because, I'm sorry to say it, I don't know a lot about American literature. But I think it will be very interesting.
I'm still hoping for something to be set up, where we can express literary views as inhabitants of one country, about another country's literature. I think what Timothy was asking, was how English people view American literature, and which of the US authors he mentioned non-Americans have heard of, and whether outsiders rate them in a similar way to how they are rated in their home country.I was keen to respond, as was Gill, and Dhanaraj actually commented on the topic itself.
But when I said "from an English point of view" I wasn't thinking of the sort of questions you mentioned, Alannah, as those are purely local issues, ie only interesting for people within the UK. (They are great questions, but not about the topic we were actually discussing.)
What I meant was, I personally would be interested to hear other countries and cultures' views of English literature, and other countries views of other countries (eg USA on Australia) - ie those outside my own experience.
I've restricted this to English-speaking nations purely to simplify the examples. This would clearly be a popular theme, as several of us have expressed a desire to respond.
So how about it mods?

Alannah, the problem with the calender idea is that when we members get notifications or emails, it brings us immediately to the relevant post and not the Calender part.
Maybe it would be better to leave out the Calender and let everyone's posts just stay as they are.

If you decide would like the posts stating release dates deleted at any time (like Jenny does with the bday calendar) just let me know :)

Jean wrote: "Brilliant! Thank you Shirley, you are a ★!!! :D"Was going to set up a new thread, but have discovered we already have one entitled "World Literature" under 'Book Chat' - so I thought we could use that? I will move the discussion from here onto there and we can all chat away about it.
Here's the link to the World Literature thread:

Shirley, thanks for copying. I wasn't online yesterday so I missed the latest developements. I thought maybe the last idea was for it to have an own thread and to maybe also create one for British lit at some point? However discussion in World Lit seems to have kicked off now which is good. If it get's very lively, I think at some point in time it might be worth it to open a World Lit folder rather than thread maybe, where we can discuss literature of individual countries or cultural circles. (people could open a thread for a country/region they are interested in) Or would this add too much to our slight overabundance of threads?
Jenny wrote: "Shirley, thanks for copying. I wasn't online yesterday so I missed the latest developements. I thought maybe the last idea was for it to have an own thread and to maybe also create one for British..."Yes, we could do that. Maybe see how it goes for a while...

Thanks Bette, sounds like a good idea, we will definitely bear this in mind when we are planning our group challenges for 2015!
Last month we had so many people say 'yes' to the Readathon but probably only half posted their number of pages at end of weekend. Would it be worthwhile to send an 'event reminder', in the form of an event, to remind people? Or would a Group Announcement suffice?I'll leave it up to the Mod Squad to decide. Thanks, Bette:)
LauraT wrote: "How can you do an "event reminder"?!?"I think the only way would be to do a group announcement as a reminder, or send an email to all members.
I got an event reminder from GR about the readathon this morning, (7 hours ago) so unless that came from one of the mods GR already sends them out.One of the other groups I'm in did readathons and stopped doing them because very few people ever took part.
I've received it as well, but I didn't do anything. Probably it is sort of connected wuth the event form!!!
I need help getting a book here into GR. I am not a librarian. This audiobook ( http://www.audible.com/pd/Classics/Tw... ) I just bought from Audible and it is not listed here at GR. I would be very thankful if someone could add it here at GR.
Thank you in advance!
Oh, a friend saw me asking for the collection of Chekov stories and has already added it for me. Here it is now: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...I don't need any help, but thank you anyhow.
Chrissie wrote: "Oh, a friend saw me asking for the collection of Chekov stories and has already added it for me. Here it is now: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2......"Oh dear... I just added it too. I'll go delete my copy.
Chrissie wrote: "Oh Leslie, I am sorry. I wrote here as soon as I saw my friend Laura had added it. (((Leslie)))"Well, it was a good learning experience as I have never added a new title before (just different editions of existing titles). Gotta look at the silver lining :)
Chrissie wrote: "Anyhow, thank you, Leslie. and I am sorry you then had to spend time deleting it."Pshaw! It takes about 5 seconds to delete!
Laura- Yeah I believe GR sends event invite reminds automatically. A lot of people do have their profiles set to not get EIs though because some authors use them to spam people. Chrissie- Unless they've changed something or it works differently in Europe you don't have to be a librarian to add a new book only to change something about book that is already in the system.

Oh, I had no idea! I thought there were special places you had to go to get the covers and stuff like that. I thought you were not allowed to copy stuff from particular places.
@Chrissie. If you are simple entering a new edition, you can copy the blurb from an edition already on GR.Be aware that when you load on a new edition, you need to ask Librarians/Moderators to combine editions for you. If you don't, your new entry will appear like a 'new' book the author has released i.e. will not appear in the list of 'other editions' of the book.

Actually this book was not listed at all. It wasn't a matter of a new edition.
@Chrissie. Ah! no problem. Oh well, you know what to do now if you have a new edition for a current book:)

There are copyright rules about author photos, but I don't think there are any rules about book covers. You can also add a book without adding a cover to it at all. None librarians can add things to a book they added, so you could go back and add the cover later as well.

A lot of story collections have different groupings of stories and you aren't supposed to combine those. That is why people like Chekhov have thousands of books listed as being written by them, because every time a collection comes out with a different grouping of works it gets a new listing.

Yes, I am already aware of that, thanks amber. I was listing the basic rules for Chrissie. More information can be found the the Librarians Manual which can be found in the Help menu. https://www.goodreads.com/librarian_m...
