Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Oh boy - and again on the "Rebecca" thread. This person may say "respectfully " but it's getting beyond a joke :(

Done, and I have removed E from the group, as he/she requested.

And again.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Thanks Shirley. Hopefully there's an end to it. What an odd thing to do, to ask to be removed from a group! She could have left it herself rather than be blocked! :D

It appears he (I google him and he is indeed a man) has been asking to be removed from several groups. Bizarre.

message 108: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) The only possible reason I can think of for that, is so that he can then put the "blame" on to the groups. Persecution complex or something similar? I don't know - just a thought. (Sorry I got the gender wrong by the way. Something must have misled me.)

I've realised now that this is a pretty useful thread for us to post an "alert" on! I hope we don't have to use it in that way very often though. It's much nicer as an "advice" thread :)

Still having problem with internet connection at home - no phone line still!!! - I've missed all this going on! Glad that the others coped with it better than I could have done!!!

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Unless you mods are "fielding" some of the nuisances, I think we're doing pretty well to not have more of this sort of thing in "All About Books". It doesn't happen very often really, thankfully :)

Hope you get your phone back soon, Laura. In the meantime, enjoy the peace? LOL

YES!!!!!!! But still we have all mobile working ... :(

message 113: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments Seen that three members of the group have had a meeting I think it would be a nice idea if these pics could be added in the shelf "photos" of the group.
In this way we can find them more easily, it's also a nice way to see how the members of the group are friends and if there will be other meetings the new pics can be added creating a kind of "album" of all the meetings (adding date, place and maybe names of the members so they are not mixing).

What do you think about it?

message 114: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Hope you don't mind me saying that I think this is a really lovely idea :)

I'll put what I really came on here to say in a separate comment.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I know Jenny and Laura may not see this for a couple of days but hopefully they will eventually.

There's been a bit of discussion about self-promotion, which we all know is strictly against group policy. All the members are assiduous about this. We have at least one professional author who regularly contributes, and he's extremely careful. Several of us have friends and relatives who are authors, but again we don't use this group as a platform. When one member who contributes almost daily put a link to her writing, she was reminded of the rules and asked not to do it again. She hasn't, and continues to put a lot into the group.

The recent chats have been about pushing a certain book, this one

There is one member who is doing it. In her membership of AAB, since last October, she has made a total of 17 comments, 16 of which have been pushing this book. I hesitate to put her name here, but several of us have spotted it.

At first I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Plenty of people spend a long time over one book, and this is apparently a young impressionable person. I made this point a few months ago, but as she continues to never mention anything else, it looks fishier and fishier. All may well be not as it seems.

Do you think any book should be pushed in this way? Whether there is a personal connection between the reader and the author or not, it seems to qualify as advertising to me.

Although she has set her profile to private, the messaging facility still works (I tried it.) I think it would be a good idea to have a private word about this, at the very least.

No offence. Joel but this group has a very strict no self promotion policy as highlighted in Jean's post above you.

If you want people to read and review your book you can list a giveaway: https://www.goodreads.com/giveaway
or give a look to the author programm: https://www.goodreads.com/author/program

Like you are doing right now is, in my opinion, the worst way to promote a book: you haven't read the rules of the group and you neither have read the message above you. Readers don't like a lot self promotions and if I see it you can be sure I will never read a self promoted book.

Jean, just a quick note to say that as moderators, we are aware of this and are currently discussing it. We do not condone self promotion and if we believe it is happening, we will take relevant steps to either warn the person beforehand or simply remove them from the group.

Just turned my pc on now! I was thinking of posting the photoes on the group - Jenny told me that someone thought it a good idea, when I've read Terri's message. I'm a bit shocked actually, the same thing happened to a collegue of my husband and i know what it takes. I think I'll wait for a couple of days if you don't mind ...

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments I read with interest Jean's comment #119. And I'd like to add my support.

I have checked two other groups I belong to and this member has done the same thing there. Surely this is a case of sockpuppeting?

message 131: by [deleted user] (new)

@Bette - mail me with the name of the member and I'll look into it (its difficult to check back at messages on the app, but I'll be on the computer soon) :)

message 133: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I know who you mean Bette, thanks for letting us know. Could you direct me to a similar comment in the Aussie group maybe (was browsing my way through your groups just now)? Not being a member I can't view member comments by going via the member list.

message 134: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Also making similar comments in Book Vipers, apparently...

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments I can't tell you the dates now because I've since been checking other groups and didn't record the dates on paper. I haven't referred this to my Mod in AR because AR is a only Reading group; we don't have set book discussions like AAB does. I will check out dates now and get back to you.

In Fiction Fanatics under name of Claudia - again SG is the only book she mentions but Claudia is no longer a member of FF. Both 'Claudia' and 'Mariana' live in Portugal.

Book Vipers - I didn't write details down.

Hope this info helps!

Was that directed at me? The member has been blocked from Aussie Readers just now.

message 141: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Just for your info, she has disappeared from the other group's members list too. So if nobody deleted her, maybe she has got wise to being exposed and has done a runner!

Now that there seems to be enough evidence that there has been sockpuppeting going on since last October, would it be possible for the mods to delete the posts which are advertising this book, please? Or at least some of them.

Yes, I just found the book on the bookshelf of Literary Exploration group but can't find her actual posting.

Hopefully all mods of the affected groups will delete said book from each groups bookshelf.

@Jean The book was published in Oct so the author has just got right in there and started this charade immediately.

message 146: by B the BookAddict (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Bette wrote "@Jean The book was published in Oct so the author has just got right in there and started this charade immediately."

Oh wow, Bette! It's just so devious! I remember googling the author a few months ago and finding no connection. She had a different profile pic, which I guess is easy, but even appeared to be a different nationality!

LOL - And I'm not Charles Dickens...

edit: Perhaps I should add her name to my post 119 now, so that any mods of other groups, who are also members of this one, may spot it, and be warned about her!! Though it's easy enough to track her down if you follow the link to the book. Nobody else enthuses about it after all. :D

Yes, I checked too. The book has a big following in Portugal.

I was an Executive Accountant so am used to tracking things but in this case, I am left here feeling just a tad like a tattle-tale.

Bette Booklover wrote: "Was that directed at me? The member has been blocked from Aussie Readers just now. "

No, sorry I meant it for Jenny :P I wasn't sure if she had already deleted her but it looks like she has just deleted herself. I am going to write a complaint to goodreads. I have done it before with various 'members' in Perks who were posting about the same book, in the same tone, if that makes sense. I looked at the reviews and all of the 5 star ones from different goodreads 'members' were written in VERY similar language. So I wrote to Goodreads, who said they would look into it ;)

@Jean - once I've screen-shotted them for future reference, I'll delete :)

EDIT: I have removed the comments. I have also written a mail to Goodreads and will write said ex-member a mail to inform them of this.
