Kristi (kristicoleman) NICE! Thanks Loretta!!

Becky Fantastic! I started reading today at the doctors office. I'm already pleasantly surprised at how drawn into the narrative I am.

Loretta (lorettalucia) Yeah, when I first read this one, I read all 1000+ pages in a week or so. I can't imagine reading it at the 50 pages per week pace, if it's your first time reading. A real page turner. :)

Alana (alanasbooks) | 456 comments I think I read it in two days when I was in high school. But it was summer break and that's literally all I did for those two days (including long hours into the night). I devoured it, though, it was great!

Loretta (lorettalucia) And, actually, we're not even really doing 50 pages a week. More like 60-70 most weeks. Chapters were long, so it's hard to break up.

Kara So excited!

Loretta (lorettalucia) Also, as an FYI, I will be opening the topics on Mondays rather than Sundays pretty much every week. It's just easier for me to do so. So if you don't see it on Sunday, I'm not late, that's just how I've planned to do it.

Becky Works for me! I'm almost finished with chapter 3!

Andrea I really wanted to join in on this one but Im not sure if I have the time. Hmmm,

message 13: by Kara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kara We're not that far in, and it's a pretty fast read. You should totally join in!

Alana (alanasbooks) | 456 comments I'm actually not going to start reading it myself until at least October because it's a re-read for me and I'd rather just pick it up and go straight through, so I'll catch up on the threads as I go along.

message 15: by Andrea (new) - added it

Andrea Thanks Kara! If I can find my book this weekend I may jump in.

message 16: by Andrea (new) - added it

Andrea I found my book! I have to do some work with the Count of Monte Cristo schedule before I can do anything else. I marked off all the pages and I'll jump in with you all a little later. I'm so excited to finally pull this off the shelf :)

Stephanie Ok, so seriously pretty excited about this one! Sorry I missed the official start date, but I'll be all caught up soon!!!

Becky Are we supposed to be through chapters 36 now? I think I'm hovering at 34....

message 19: by Jen (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jen (jeninseattle) | 140 comments Yep - this week is through the end of 36. I think I'm in nearly the same spot you are Becky - right around 34/35.

Jess :) I am just now beginning the novel, and it looks like I have a lot of catching up to do. Life has been so busy lately! Yesterday I finished Part I - I should be caught up within a week or two. Better late than never :)

Andrea I'm super duper behind!

Becky Well you aren't missing it :D You can join in !

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) Ha, I just started it a few days ago, the audio version. After the Harry Potter audio books, this is the best audio (Audible) book I have ever listened to! I read it over 45 years ago and it's like a new book to me - SOOO much better than the movie and a lot more in the book than I remember! I hope I can catch up to you all before it's supposed to be finished, lol!

Becky OOoo the Harry Potter books are the standard for audiobooks in my opinion, who narrates Gone With The Wind?

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) Linda Stephens. It's 49 hours 7 min long! Audible has it on sale for only $3.99!!

Becky Excellent!

Jen (jeninseattle) | 140 comments Hey Kids -

How are people doing with GWTW? I know there are couple of us that are pretty much up to date with the schedule, but I also know there are a lot more people lurking around a few chapters back.

Should we take another break week so people can catch up? If we took one more weeks break we could still finish before Christmas. What does everyone think? I am happy to update the schedule if people want to build in another break.

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) I started listening to it on Audible last week and I'm almost through the 2nd part (page 300+), with 4 parts to go! It is the BEST audible book I have ever listened to. I love love love it! Taking a break is find with me.

Amy (bibliocrates) I dug my copy out. I'll be starting it after I finish my current book.

Kristi (kristicoleman) So what would everyone rate this book? Once we get a consensus I will post that on our bookshelf for the book.

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) I'm still listening to it, but it's 5 stars for me!! Loving it. And like I said, the audible version is BEST one I've ever listened to.

Becky I rated it two stars. In the end I found so little redeeming in the book, and I found it rather shallow. It was a disappointing end to me when I had otherwise really enjoyed the beginning. It became so repetitive and stifling, there were about 100 pages at the beginning, middle, and the end that I actually cared about, but the other five hundred pages did not resonate well with me. I felt that the author had one-view of Reconstruction and of Emancipation for the slaves, and that she missed an opportunity to round out the book by showing both sides of the story.
