Andre Norton wrote a lot of straightforward SF adventure without military stuff. I particularly recommend Catseye and Dread Companion
I highly recommend 'Ready Player One' by Ernest Cline. Picked it up in a bookstore on sale having never heard of it before. The list of authors giving their kudos is quite impressive. If you have knowledge/ interest in video games and 80's culture then I'm sure you'll love it. Best description I heard was Charlie's Chocolate Factory meets The Matrix. A great sci fi/ dystopian novel. Loving every page.
The Last Planet (aka Star Rangers) by Andre Norton.ANYTHING by Leigh Brackett, especially her Eric Stark stories.
The Lensman books.

I still might be unique though, I'm a big fan of the movie as well.
