Or maybe some people just have varied taste. Really, insulting the whole fanbase like this is what's immature.

Anyway, not gonna engage in some pointless argument. Have a nice day, sir. Hope someday you learn people can like things you don't and not be...handicapped.

Jessica What my opinion would be is to listen to the others when they say that it is only you who can make that decision, that you shouldn't let people's opinion of the series sway you. The only real thing that I could say is to skip New Moon and disregard the last part of Breaking Dawn and you're all set. Because nothing really happens. You could read a cliffnote of it and see if you really want to read it, but I've seen plenty of people say that New Moon was their least favorite. Reading a recap of it would give you the gist of what happened minus the plethora of unneeded drama Meyer added on.

Kirby Well, I sure hope that if you have decided to read it you didn't read Paul's rant, as he seems to be under the impression that there's no need to mark spoilers if he personally didn't like something.

Zeina The books are so different from movies and much better. I like them a lot but everyone has his own taste. Although I love classics I've become a fan of this book, maybe it's not the piece of art in the writing, but it's so mesmerizing. And I don't believe it's a bad influence on young girls, so give it a try.

Denise Wow. People get really crazy with their comments and opinions! I personally loved the book. MUCH more than the movie. The characters are deeper in the book. You gain a lot of insight that you do not get from the movie. It is an easy, enjoyable story. Yes there is some ridiculousness, ie. Sparkling Vampires. But whatever. I am 40 and NOT IMMATURE. I have a large genre of reading preferences. These are not my all time favorites, but I would recommend them.

Astoria My advice would be "NOOO, SAVE YOURSELF, Twiligt teaches you the importance of having a bf, and how useless a girl can be when hormones are involved", But that would be immature.

I think, it's up to you whether you read it or not. It is a beautiful thing, having freedom to read whatever you want to read.

andie Resendes yes, you should the books are way better

Jessica No.

Just No.

Julie Shankle So many Twilight haters on here. As an English teacher, I would recommend ANY book that a reader can find interesting. Twilight has some original and fun ideas, but it also could use some help with plot for sure. One thing that Meyer does fairly well is develop voice for her characters. Is Twilight high literature? Certainly not. But it certainly isn't crude or boring either. It's a quick, easy, fun read. More of a summer read or an SSR type book. The point is to read. Research shows that access to books creates good readers. That research doesn't say access to only high literature. Having a library with RL Stine serials for kids promotes a love of reading just as readily as simpler, fun reads like Twilight does for preteens and teens. I started reading my mom's Harlequin Romances when I was in fifth grade. These books were formulaic and certainly not "good" writing, but they helped me develop a love of reading and writing that still exists today. I enjoyed the Twilight series. Did I find Bella a bit of whiner? Yep. Did I find Edward a downer at times? Yep. Did I find Jacob miserable at times? Yep. But I still found the books entertaining. Good luck in your book hunting. If you like paranormal stories, this should be a fun, yet easy series, to read.

+1 for this post! You are totally right!

I started this topic just to know if twilight would still be a good read after I read divergent etc... and it turned out in this big discussion, which is fine, but never my intention. So I am going to read twilight, and I am sure I will like in some way.

Just No! There are so many good books out there, don't waste precious moments of your life with this c***

Melissa I will share advice I was given that has proven valuable: try the sample (or borrow from friend/library) - if you can put it down at the end of the first few chapters, don't read it. If you are hooked, read on!

Emily I think you should read it just for the experience. I mean, when I first read them I liked them. They're nothing special, but it's still a good idea.

message 67: by Lois (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lois I would re-read the series because it takes me back to my high school days =) lol but i really did love the books! i was madly in love with Edward <3 & the only regrets i had about the series was watching the horrible movies.
and yes honestly there are better books out there but the Twilight series will always be one of my favorites

Marilyn Whoa, if Paul doesn't convince you to not read it, then I don't know what will.

Willow Weird question! Read it if you want to. It's not a horribly good book, but it obviously had something in it that resonated with a large audience. That means it had something of value, despite its flaws. You won't know whether you find the same value if you don't read it.

Bianca I quite liked it, but I read it a few years ago. I think I was in 5th grade. Maybe if I had read it now I wouldn't have liked it so much. But if you're younger it's quite a fabulous book.

Rainbow Moonstone I'm really happy that you chose to go against people's deterrence and plan to read the story for yourself. No matter what other people say about the books, making up your own mind is the very best option in this instance :)

The books have been demonized beyond reason because in recent years it has simply become a social trend to select something and unleash hatred onto it. I don't encourage anyone to mindlessly join this trend, or to be scared to admit that they enjoyed a series just becomes others like to look down on you if you did. This particular series might really appeal to you or it might not depending on your tastes. I'm not saying that hearing other peoples reviews and opinions is a negative thing but when it comes to Twilight, opinions have been convoluted by trends.

Marilyn Bree wrote: "The books have been demonized beyond reason because in recent years it has simply become a social trend to select something and unleash hatred onto it"

Why are you assuming that only Twilight gets poor treatment when everything in Mainstream American media gets the same treatment? Pop, rap/hip hop artists, reality tv stars, etc are all talent-less hacks just like Stephanie Meyer. It is not a social trend to hate something naturally bad; in fact I'd say it's the opposite and it's the popular thing to like trashy romance novels such as Twilight.

As to why Twilight is bad; please refer to the large wall of text that Paul has painstakingly written out. He's made all valid points, to which I agree wholeheartedly. To pass our hatred for your beloved books as "the popular thing to do" is the most absurd thing to assume when an explanation is staring blatantly in your face.

message 73: by Gerd (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gerd Marilyn wrote: "To pass our hatred for your beloved books as "the popular thing to do" is the most absurd thing to assume when an explanation is staring blatantly in your face."

Actually, it isn't, the most absurd thing that is. I'd find it rather absurd to "Hate" something, just because it's badly written and yet still widely liked.
But then hatred is most of the time an irrational response, so I guess it's asked too much of people to be, well, more rational about it. :)

deedee megadoodoo In my personal opinion I think reading Shiver would be more of a step back than Twilight. Shiver's a good story and the writing's well done, but it's a slow story dragged along the pages of a thin book. Twilight has it's grammatical errors, but so does every book. That's not a reason to not read it.

You should read Twilight-- it took most people about an average of four days to finish each book in the series, so it's not like you'll be wasting much time if you hated it-- mainly for the reason that you may really like it.

Bella is no Rose from Vampire Academy (Matched wasn't my favorite book) and Twilight has no plot like Divergent, because it's not a dystopian in the first place, but in comparison to the things that you have been reading-- I think you should read Twilight because it does appeal to a large audience, that you may fit into, for lots of reasons just like Divergent, Vampire Academy, and Matched, and exactly like Divergent, Vampire Academy, and Matched, Twilight does get a lot of hate along with it's large popularity.

I think you should read Twilight. If you hate it, it's not like the world will end or someone will come murder you, and if you like it then you've gained a good read c:

Though considering the books you've listed as the books you've been reading, I think you'll like Twilight. But that's just me.

Happy reading.

Marilyn Gerd wrote: "Marilyn wrote: "To pass our hatred for your beloved books as "the popular thing to do" is the most absurd thing to assume when an explanation is staring blatantly in your face."

Actually, it isn't..."

The concept itself, is extremely cliched and cheesy, why wouldn't people like it? As for how it's written, that's where the main problem lies. As Paul had already addressed.

Paul wrote: "Meyer places big words in simple sentences to make the books seem more advanced, yet misuses words I learned in first grade.

Meyer has no sense of Biology WHAT SO EVER. Vampires are dead..no heartbeat no Pulse according Meyer they can't cry Blush, pee etc but wait no blood flow? means no erection, no sex, no impregnation only an immature mind could easily dismiss basic biology for the sake of suspension of disbelief right? But When you assume as Meyer was that you're writing to an IMMATURE audience no one will question common sense as long as they can say "OMG Edward is like so hot, I wish I could get a boy to stalk me and break into my bedroom.""

If you have anythign further to say, do so. I've other things to do then to argue why trash like Twilight, Bieber or the Kardashians are wildly popular.

I am a sucker for Asian horror movies. D: I enjoy the occasional American horror movie, but only if it's well done. However, I'm not a fan of the remakes they seem to be doing as of late. Though, I still watch them for the laughs though.

People tend to overuse words such as hate and love, which includes myself. :P I'm pretty sure you got the general gist of it.

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

The books are really misunderstood...it's not their fault the movies sucked. My friends gave me so much smack about reading them that I had to put a book cover on it just to get them to buzz off....but it was worth it! Like I said, misunderstood but totally worth reading;)

Really? I easily read each book in a day, and I probably could have read them even faster if I had picked up the next book the same day when I finished one.

I'd call the Twilight books "popcorn reading." They won't fill you up, you can consume them surprisingly fast, and they have no real value after you're done, but they can be sortof fun for a little while...if you don't think too hard about all the really bizarre ideas and messages in the books.

Your problem then :(

Besides, Edward and Bella seemed to have misused the word love plenty of times at the beginning of their relationship, did they not? I honestly think it's quite fair here. ;D

Casey I think that you should read it to gather your own unbiased opinion on it.

Italia8989 It honestly depends what you like. If you are looking for a romance that is literally the plot, then go for it. But if you want something more, like a plot that has a romance in it, then it probably is not for you. I think half of the problem with "Twilight" and why it has so many haters is because they plot IS the romance. This does not necessarily mean it's bad, it just is the way it is. Without the vampires and werewolves, Bella is just another regular teenage girl. People tend to want someone with a strong personality before the action kicks in. Based on the books you listed, it might be a bit humdrum for you. I personally enjoyed the romance and the history of the vampires/werewolves, though the biggest problem is how Bella relies on Edward. This is what gets people the most: They want a strong independent female character who can live on her own. It isn't the case with "Twilight," but the fact Bella cannot live without Edward is essential for her wanting to become a vampire.

message 88: by Elisabeth (last edited Aug 22, 2013 08:01AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Elisabeth If you've watched the movies I suggest you read the book. I say this only because the books are way better then the movies! I do have to say that if your a supernatural romance fan that I would give Twilight a 4 out of 10 score only because for me personal I like more romance in my books and twilight was to I don't know predictable I like more suspense and action. So if your not interested in reading the books then I would suggest you read Dianne Duvall's Immortal Guardians series! It's a great read, you'll love all the characters, it's funny but has danger and action and two different supernatural beings fighting one another and lets not forget the romance if anything Dianne Duvall's Immortal Guardians series in my opinion tops all supernatural romance books! lol Anyway like I said if you don't want to read twilight then give Dianne Duvall's series a try you wont regret it lol :)

Amanda I personally thought that Twilight is a super good story. I think that you should give it a try. Yes the writing sucks compared to other novels, but it is still a good series. I loved this story! I hope that you will give it a try, the worst that would happen is that you hate them. Just try them...

Tatiana Almeida Yes! Of course, you'll be amazed

Valencia Petje Okay so I've watched the whole Twilight Saga movies and I enjoyed them. Loved them and all but I've heard so many people say you should read the books before even watching the movies. Now as I've read some of the reviews for the books, it seems such a waste of time. Now I'm wondering if I should even bother reading the books with such bad reviews. Decisions..decisions...

Madeline Dyer I would say to read it. I actually really liked Twilight, butit was one of the first vampire novels I'd read. However, after reading Vampire Academy I liked Richelle's novels better, but I do still like Twilight--and the movies!

I didn't think I'd like Twilight when I started reading it, but once I got into it I enjoyed it. I thought it was better then other books like Marked. It's really your choice whether you read something or not, but all I can say is, what would it hurt? If you don't like it, you can just stop reading it. :)

Paige Yin people likes to compare books.
they especially like to say this book is better than the other, and which book is following the style of another, which one is 'good' read and which one is 'bad' read - aka it isn't healthy, no actual value within the story itself and such and blah and blah.

i have to agree twilight is not nerve-wreaking amazingly written book, it focuses on romance, and then all the ridiculous things teenagers do for love, but ain't that supposed to be? ain't teens are supposed to be do stupid thing like fall for the most handsome guy in your school? even if said someone is a vampire - well, it just add in a bad boy fantasy most ladies/ girls like to see written in fictions, don't you think? it is also the reason why people love vampire diaries and true blood and all that ain't it?

what i am trying to say is, one should read a book with an open mind, give it at least a 100 pages to prove to you whether it is good or bad, never judge it because people say it is bad. what others think is not what you think, your brain is not wired the same way theirs do.

i seldom let people reviews affect my judgement, so would i not let the movies ruin my view of the book and vise versa. i like twilight as it is a story.

and seriously, there is no good and bad story, it is just whether the story can get to you, that's all.

and with this, i shall leave the decision up to you. :)

Priyamvadha Naomi wrote: "Twilight is just simply not good literature. It's poorly written and WAY too long. Invest your time in reading something more worthwhile."

I second that.Personally,I did not like it.But if you want to read, read it and then say your opinion. You never know may even love it.
