The Sea of Monsters

What the hell was that?! (Movie discussion)

Yes, these things are changed, but there are also a lot of the things in the movie that DID make sense and WERE in the books, as well as things that they tried to patch up from the first one, and are trying to make the fans happy.
I don't like movie adaptions and changes either, but you have to understand and accept some of them. I feel as though the changes that were made to this movie made more sense and were more necessary than the changes that were made to the first one.
You also left out the fact that Thalia was brought into it, and with all of her parts of recognition, they were all in the book. I absolutely loved the end part where she awakens from the ground. Her actor was absolutely perfect.
There are good points too, I just don't think people should be turned against the movie or the whole movie series all together because of this, because they are improving and they are trying. Mr. D's actor was perfect!

So I think it says something that even I don't know what they next movie will be about and I've read the books.
And screwing with the classic myths is just unacceptable in my opinion. If they can't get the story right, they could at least get the myths that the story is based on correct.
Also, the book was supposed to be an epic journey, based largely on the Odyssey. And they took out almost everything that allowed the viewer to make those connections: the sirens, Sylla, Cerci, etc.
By all means people should go out and form their own opinions, but mine is that it was utterly insulting to a lover of this series who appreciates the vast references to Greek mythology that the series contains.

Does anyone know if they actually do plan on making three more movies? Maybe they'll just abandon it when it turns out to be a waste of money. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is basically the defining book series of my childhood, in much the same way that Harry Potter is for other people, so these travesties of movie adaptations almost feel like a personal insult to me. (On a side note, Chris Columbus directed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone quite skillfully, so how did he manage to botch The Lightning Thief up so badly?) I was in 6th grade when the Lightning Thief movie came out, and I remember being so excited I could hardly stand it. My brother and I even made Camp Half-Blood t-shirts to wear to the theater! (You can imagine the metaphorical slap in the face I received when the orange camp t-shirts were mysteriously missing from the movie.)
Anyway, I will never see a Percy Jackson movie in the theater again. I'll rent The Sea of Monsters from RedBox. I feel compelled to watch every movie adaptation they make because of how much I love the books, but I'm not sure that future movies will even be worth that one dollar...

That's true.

I was more-so saying that towards the people that have been saying they don't want to give this one a shot after the first one was so terrible.
Also, I completely agree on the implying-Luke-is-dead-thing. That was a huge drawback of mine from the first one. People argued with me that him being pushed off a building into the water didnt mean death. So I kind of liked that he mentioned he could swim, but then they turned around and did the same thing again with the cyclops scene, so bleh.
There were things I liked and things I disliked.

Haha thank you :P

Sorry, there will be cussing in this post because I am absolutely DISGUSTED by the new Percy Jackson sea of monsters movie. Spoiler alert: they complete..."

No dont tell me this! I was hoping this movie would stick to the plot of the book. His books dont need hollywood changes. I guess i will see the six dollar matinee
I don't agree. They have to change things. What's the point of it being exactly the same?

They changed the plot so much from the book, that I was almost amazed to actually see that kept any the same. I was so ready for them to start calling Percy by a whole other name, since evidently they didn't give a damn about how it related to the books.
The things that bugged me the most were...
- Clarisse: Okay, Clarisse is suppose to be the camp bully who is cruel to everyone, especially Percy. She's not suppose to redeem herself, become the nice girl who like basically begins to worship Percy in the end of Sea of Monsters.
- Annabeth and Percy: What happened to the amazing characters we were introduced to in the books? They were 2-dimensional. I felt like their whole personalities had been scrapped and instead they had been replaced with stock characters.
- Demigods: When the Colchis Bull attacked, the demigods did NOTHING. Have they not been sent to Camp Half-Blood to actually learn how to fight and protect themselves?! Instead they all stood around and just started at the bloody bull while it tore apart their camp.
- Luke's Transportation Device: Honestly? Was this just some random thing to make it so much more 'dramatic'? And why did Luke not transport himself away when Kronos was about to eat him?!
- Krnons: WHY WAS HE A BIG LAVA-ROCK GUY?! ALL THE OTHER GODS LOOK LIKE PEOPLE. WHAT WAS THIS?!
- Annabeth's Death: What happened here? They all started to freak out, but no one was smart enough to immediately realize that they had the Golden Fleece in their hands! They had the most powerful healing device known to Greek Mythology, and they were like 'oh, whatever. Let's just watch her die in one of the most painful ways ever. Then we'll help her after she dies!'
- The Prophecy: Okay, I get how they had to change the age of the Prophecy to 20 from 16, since they completey changed all the character's ages, but did that not bug anyone else? It just made me cringe.
- The Horrible Script: *scream* 'That's Clarisse!' 'That's not Clarisse!' 'YOU STUPID MORONS!' 'That's Clarisse!'
- It's A Small World: .... Just what was that?!
- Tyson: Just everything.
The two things I actually did like was some of Luke's lines. They were horrible, but they actually added something to the line.
And most of all, the Firefly refrence from Hermes/Nathan Fillion. It was absolutely brilliant that they threw that in there.

I did go see it - mostly because it was the only one I was remotely interested in when I wanted to go see a movie. I started regretting it about 20 minutes in. I might have enjoyed it at a $3 movie theater.

He has nothing to do with the movie making he even admits that he doesn't like them/hasn't seen them himself. You can't blame him for this. Also, it's Hollywood you can't sue because you don't like a movie..

Question: What amazing Percy/Annabeth moment occurs in this book? Because I've already read it and can't think of anything.

We say it'd be an awesome movie because if they stuck to the plot it would be! Like HP! But when you add stupid and unnecessary things and even stuff contradicting from the books it turns horrible!

Cherie wrote: "You don't remember the part with the sirens? When annabeth wants to hear them because they reveal the truth of your desires.. But then she jumps into the ocean and tries to swim away and Percy save..."
Thanks!!!! I'm doing a re-read and am just about to get to that scene! Can't wait! :)

Yes, these things are changed, but there ar..."
I'm not trying to be a grammar nazi, but it's actress...?

- First of all, the age... It messes with everything!
- How little depth there is in Annabeths portrayal. She is this amazing female character, with flaws like her pride and know-it-all attitude. And it got lost in this.. thing. A lot of the get-to-know Annabeth part in The Sea of Monster.. it wasn't there. And for me, it was in this book that I started shipping Percabeth.
- Tyson.. everything was wrong.. The contrast between the body and personality. I pictured him bigger and rougher physical. And then this sweet face with this naiv, simple and adorable person inside! And this wanna-be stamps in and make him totaly different..
- Clariss.. Well, like Tyson, I picture her more bigger and rougher as well (not in a Tyson-way though!). And that she would have more pride and be a bit more annoying.. If I remember right, she did som hugh mistakes on that quest because she didn't take advice from Percy..
- And Percy.. meh! I didn't get the Percy-awsomeness-vibe from him like in the books.. I feel like they used the entire movie to build up Percys "badass-ness", and didn't pull it of. If they just had followed Riordens book, that would have come naturally and It wouldn't seem like a brag movie. and did they totaly forget to save Blackjack?!?!
I really liked Nathan Fillion as Hermes. And Mr.D was awesome! And Rainbow! OMG! So cute!
And that they swithced Pierce Brosnan with Anthony Head was a brilliant move as well.
But I must say... there were very little I enjoyd in this movie... :(

Annabeth was absolutely useless in the movie, I couldn't stand it. >_>

They messed up with the myths.
Oh and don't even get me started on Kronos rising. HE WASN'T SUPPOSED TO RISE UNTIL THE LAST BOOK! And Luke was supposed to be his vessel.
They messed up the whole prophecy because Percy wasn't' supposed to get it till the last book but he got it in the second one (and I'm sure they really messed up the meaning but it's been awhile since I've read The Last Olympian).
I didn't like Annabeth she was too shallow and didn't have any depth.
Also I don't understand why you guys disliked Tyson. I liked the way they portrayed him. I thought he was really close to the Tyson in the book.
I pretty much covered everything that I hated about this movie.
I tried to give it a chance I tried so hard and I was okay with it (barely) until Kronos rose and I was literally about to turn it off. I thought this movie would've been better than the first but I was wrong. Horribly wrong.

I will! And yeah of course I don't agree with everything about Tyson (the bottle of mist... Yeah hated that), but there was enough things I despised about the movie that I looked past it.

6. The Characters, they killed them.. Annabeth, Percy, Clarisse and even Tyson's characters were just totally wrong for me... Tyson's meant to be this guy who's basically a big baby, 'Ponies' 'Annaeth is pretty' 'Scared... Smell funny' stuff like that, Annabeth is meant to have her wisdom and pride and all that.. I thought she was pretty weak in this, Clarisse too.
7. Kronos... Hell no... Why bring him in fricking THREE BOOKS EARLY as some crappy lava-rock dude who EATS LUKE... WTF???!!!
8. ALL OF IT. This film was utter crap in my opinion, with very few good points, and just killed Rick Riordan's beautiful work... I hated it and just wanted to scream and punch at the screen through the whole thing. I hope the producers and directors and screenplay writers meet Hades soon. (Maybe that's harsh but IDC I'M SO ANGRY RN.

Sorry, there will be cussing in this post because I am absolutely DISGUSTED by the new Percy Jackson sea of monsters movie. Spoiler alert: they completely ruin the entire series in less than two hours.
They started off trying to add in all the crap they left out in the last movie: clarisse, dionysus, the prophesy, the oracle, etc... Sound good, right? Weeeellll, don't get too excited because they take out ALL THE BEST PARTS OF THE BOOK, including, but not limited to: Cersei's island (which is now an abandoned theme park), the sirens and the amazing Percy/annabeth moment, Sylla (how can you have Charybdis without Sylla?), and so on. It's been a while since I read the books so I have forgotten some parts.
Not only do they change the prophesy, therefore changing the purpose of the entire series, but they also decided, "Hey let's resurrect Kronos 3 books early and make the next books absolutely fucking pointless" Theeeen there is an anticlimactic scene where annabeth dies, but doesn't... Which lasts about 2 minutes. Spare me. And a part where they are swallowed by Charybdis.... And so on and so forth. Tons of entirely useless additions.
Oh and last thing... HOW DO YOU FUCK UP THE MYTHS??? How? One of my favorite things about this series is how much I learned about Greek mythology and I am so disappointed that they couldn't even get that right. The movie claimed that Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades escaped from Kronos after he attempted to eat them... That is not how shit went down! Zeus was hidden from Kronos by Rhea and eventually Zeus tricked Kronos into throwing up his siblings after which they overthrew the titans. Get your shit together!
SCREW THIS MOVIE! Screw everybody involved in it. I'm done.. I reuse to watch any further movies put out. I'm gonna reread my books and pretend this shit never happened.
End rant!
