Kevin How many of you have considered publishing your book content so it's viable for the visually impaired.

This means recording readings of your writing.

Now selling tapes is difficult, but producing youtube videos or other audio mediums and embedding them on your website isn't.

I'm seriously considering creating such videos or audio files and incorporating them on my website for the visually impaired. I'm calling around to various organizations to find out the best way to accomplish this feature.

But I want to know if you've considered it?

For readers - do you prefer books on tape, or do you prefer books on paper? Or does it depend on the situation?

discuss ^_^

Petra X (petra-x) Paper. Never audio. Audio is someone else's interpretation of a book (although if its the author reading the book, that might be very interesting). Also I can't concentrate. I couldn't sit still doing absolutely nothing except listening to a book unless I was on a train or something and there aren't any trains here so that isn't going to happen. If I did listen to an audio book and was also chatting on GR or doing anything else at all I wouldn't be concentrating in the same way, meaning total, that I have to with a paper book. Paper forever for me!

Lauren (lexnick) My daughter is legally blind and I would welcome anything audio for her when she gets older. She's only 7 right now so everything is pretty much large print for her but it will be harder for her to find books to read as she gets older.
Regarding what to do while listening to an audio book, I crochet. It keeps my hands busy and doesn't take much concentration.

Jackie (thenightowl) Kevin,

Neil Gaiman has a video tour of The Graveyard Book on this site: http://www.mousecircus.com/videotour....
Personally, I think it's a great idea...even more so if the author has an excellent reading voice, which IMO Gaiman does.

I prefer paper, mainly because I can read at my own pace, peek ahead or go back easily. However, thanks to GR I have been introduced to audiobooks. I'm currently on my second one and I really enjoy it. Sometimes I listen while at work if I'm doing something mundane or if I'm exercising. Also, if my eyes are tired it's a great option to just lie in bed listening, but still getting my reading done.

Kevin, we have a few audiobook threads running around in here somewhere. I would prefer not starting up another one.

Please take the time to search through the older threads for the topic you are thinking about posting. With so many members and so many threads currently out there, I would rather see us revive the old ones than start another new one.

Lori, I'm not going to search for an audio threat that may or may not be "running around in here somewhere", especially since I still don't see a thread that talks specifically about audio books in the fashion I'm discussing right now.

Now what I did see were two threads in the area entitled "book reading habits" and they are very distinctly not the same topic that I proposed here.

I considered highjacking another person's thread in such a way to be distasteful and lacking etiquette. That's why I posted this thread in "general discussion" and not "book reading habits"

oh please. Dont tell me what you did or didnt do , or could or couldnt find, Kevin.

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4...

The link above is the main one. Why would you think posting to an existing thread is HIGHJACKING? Isnt that what we do here on a daily, hourly, minutely basis? Post to other peoples topics? Isn't that what social networking is all about?

For readers - do you prefer books on tape, or do you prefer books on paper? Or does it depend on the situation?

Was this not part of the topic you proposed for discussion? Is that not what the above link has already discussed?

btw, In my original post, I was trying to be helpful. But now I'm set on making my point because I'm sort of pissed at the tone I detect in your reply.

I'm not going to search for an audio threat that may or may not be ....distasteful and lacking etiquette

Note to Kevin --- Try not to piss off the moderator.

Kevin Lori, you were not "being helpful" you were being snarky and aggressive. If you had read my post, and actually looked at the other posts, you would've realized that this was clearly a different topic than the other topics you wanted me to use, so please spare me your veild and overt threats.

edit: and let me be expressly clear this thread:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4...
is NOT the same as what I was asking in this thread. I thought you meant there was another thread which had the same content post as my original post, there is not, I searched this group. I will gladly explain the difference if you are so set on making your point you want to actually piss me off. I have literally gotten fed up with moderators who have nothing else to do in the day than toss their weight by giving off snarky threats around without reading the actual posts that they're attacking. It takes a level of immaturity to reach that level of self-important behavior and I'm sick and tired of seeing it.

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Kevin, Lori was clearly trying to do her job as a moderator. I'm offended by your last post, and it wasn't even directed at me.

message 11: by Kirsty (last edited May 15, 2009 11:41AM) (new)

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Exactly. Kevin, if you don't like moderators that much then maybe this group isn't for you. Lori is, and always has been, a very active moderator.

message 12: by Allison (last edited May 15, 2009 11:48AM) (new)

Allison (inconceivably) Lori has a BIG responsibility in keeping up this group, it is really big and she works hard to keep it organized. Everyone can tell how much she does to keep threads moved into places that will be easy to locate for everyone.

She was simply saying "hey, try asking your question in another audiobook thread instead of starting a new one." She did NOT imply that there was a thread for your specific question, she just said you could ask your question in a thread already in existence.

I'm sure Lori has PLENTY she could be doing other then cleaning up this group, but she does it anyway. That is something pretty much everyone appreciates her for. You aren't doing yourself any favors by saying otherwise.

message 13: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) aaaaand Kevin has left the building.

Er..the group.

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Probably for the best - if he's gonna attack the moderator then we don't really want him here do we?!

Thank you all for coming to my support while I was away at work. I really appreciate the things you say!

I cant please everyone, I know that, and I want to protect you all from assholes like that... god! Point someone in the right direction, and they act like you turned them in for robbery or murder. He emailed me a nasty little letter about my immature attitude. I banned him even tho he quit so he cannot come back!

:)

Hugs and Kisses to all my favorite TNBBC-ers!!!!

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Ed, I'm convinced that some folks wouldn't recognize a life if it came up and slapped them in the face!

Spammers are getting more desperate, I guess.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Hayes: You are right about "some folks wouldn't recognize a life if it came up and slapped them in the face!"

It is too bad that there are so many pains in the butts out there.

I can't believe how agressive and disagreeable he was but good by Kevin!

message 23: by Samantha McNulty (new)

Samantha McNulty I'm partially sighted and registered blind, and though I prefer reading books, I do listen to them, so anything on tape/cd would be appreciated by myself.
