Jenads85 | 52 comments Hello everyone! It's great to be here among others who are not too impressed with TL. My bone to pick is this...I have 2 best buds. I'm 23 and they're 25. We were roommates right after I graduated high school, and we've been best friends ever since. Long story short, the two of them read TL before I ever thought to, and they were smitten with it. When I would come over they would share private jokes and conversations, and when I would ask what it was all about they would just say, very snobbishly I might add, "You wouldn't understand. You haven't read it." It was all they were talking about. I got so sick of it that I went out and bought all 4 books and decided I was going to read them through if it killed me. Well, I got a third of the way through book 3 and haven't picked them up since then, and that was Christmas. Now here is the clincher...the three of us have stuck together through several deaths, marriages, man trouble, etc. and...here it comes...TL seems to have harmed our friendship. Ever since I expressed a polite but honest dislike of the books I rarely get invited to get together with the two of them, and they call each other far more than they call me. Maybe it's just a coincidence...anyone else have a similar situation? It feels like high school all over again.

Jenads85 | 52 comments I know I must sound whiny, but it's so juvenile. I thought we were way past this kind of crap. I couldn't believe such a mediocre piece of lit would cause such a reaction from the two of them.

Giggles i know right?? what do they see in it???

Sarah Terry | 1 comments It wasn't very nice of your friends to leave you out in the first place. I feel for you...

message 5: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nicapineda) Dear, I am so sorry for you. My friends who are fans of the series are mature enough to respect my views and vice versa. We even try to see it in each other's point of view. Your friends should really grow up.

message 6: by Jenads85 (new)

Jenads85 | 52 comments Believe me, I agree. I mean my god, they're 25, not 13. They are both a couple of those fans that saw the movie and couldn't accept that it wasn't that great, they listen to all of Pattinson's music, even though it's pretty mediocre, if RP says he read a particular book they have to read it to...you all know the kind I mean. We can all respect each others political and religious differences, but when I say that the plot in TL is kind of unoriginal the defenses go up. And that's an understatement by the way...it's VERY unoriginal.

Jenads85 | 52 comments Now just hearing the words "sparkly" and "velvety" brings my blood pressure up. That's a little exaggerated, but you know what I mean.

Melyssa | 52 comments I just don't get why people are willing to give up friendships over this stupid book series.

message 10: by Giggles (new)

Giggles its just a book i mean even though all my friends love that book im not going to stop being friends with them just because of the book i mean thats just stupid and ridiculous

message 11: by Jenads85 (new)

Jenads85 | 52 comments Believe me I agree with all of you. I keep hoping the "sparkle" will wear off, and they'll get tired of the whole thing. :)

Oerba Yun Fang (oerbayunfang) | 3 comments my friend used to hate twilight and now LOVES it. It's really wierd. but we kind of poke fun at each other about it...it isn't serious. i just am kind of annoyed at how much she loves it. she says she thinks edward is real, for gosh sakes!

Erin Courtney wrote: "It is so silly how people are so obsessed with Twilight!!"

y is it silly we just really like that do u think its silly when ppl get obsessed with HP, star war, or anything else?

message 17: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nicapineda) Well, I've met a lot of Harry Potter fans (being one myself) and they've given me some sane and logical arguments on why it's a great book. Not to mention, all they started were toys and shirts (or cloaks to be precise) and they didn't really start a perfume line to smell like the characters or a religion like Potterism.

For Star Wars fans, they're just kinda geeky in their own way, considering Star Wars isn't really a book OR romance(so you can't compare it to Twilight) and they're primarily in it because of the awesome graphics. Or at least some of them are.

message 18: by Melyssa (new)

Melyssa | 52 comments Yeah, but there just is a huge difference in the way that the twifans obsess over Twilight than the way HP & Star Wars fans obsess over those things.

I don't know why, but it just does seem that way.
I don't know. It's silly because the majority of twifans (not all of them) have taken 'unhealthy obsession' to a whole new level. It's weird and creepy.

Dumping actual boyfriends because they're not "Edward enough", dropping good friends because they don't like Twilight, starting a 'cult' because they actually believe the Cullens are real and worship them like gods (o.0), most of the fans can't seem to realize that Robert and Kristen are.....Robert and Kristen. They're only seen as Bella and Edward. Even tonight on the MTV awards....Kristen won for best actress or whatever, and someone yelled out "Bella won!!" And some of those Twimoms... *shudders* ....

Their website jokes about having messy houses and unwashed laundry & dishes, neglected husbands & neglected children who get to have bowls of cereal for dinner (for the countless number of days in a row) all in the name of the Twilight craze. But some of those moms really do have all that going on, and they laugh about it. Sorry, but neglecting kids for a fictional character screams a bit of mental instability to me. One of them even took a cardboard cutout of Edward with them on a trip to Forks. They sat it in a chair at the dining table in the restaurant and took it pretty much everywhere she went. I won't even go into detail about what one of those moms has done with her Edward pocket doll.

To me, if I walk into someone's home and they had a wall of collectibles of Star Wars or Potter things, it would be cool because Star Wars is standing the test of time, Potter is on it's way to doing that, and they both are good decent quality stories. If it was a wall of Twilight stuff, it would scream obsessive shrine to me because there is nothing of quality about Twilight, and that is how the fanbase is presenting themselves. It's rather shallow because the fact remains that Bella "fell in love (lust)" with Edward because of his "hot" looks, and that's all she ever talked about for practically all 4 books. If it was based on anything else, we would have been told/shown. She obsessed over being as "beautiful and perfect" as Edward and the Cullens were, and staying young like them. (Way to set back self image issues for teens Mrs. Meyer)

It's a big fad that gained popularity extremely fast. And things that gain momentum that quickly fade and die just as quickly. Star Wars has been around since 1977 and has been building a solid fan base for over thirty years. Potter is doing the same thing for over a decade, and is still going strong.
Sorry, but comparing Star Wars obsessions and Potter obsessions, and other fandoms to Twilight obsessions is a bit insulting. Because from what I've seen, all those other fandoms have shown class. From what I've seen from most of the Twilight fandom, well.....it definitely is not class. It's definitely on the other end of the spectrum. Which is kind of sad for the sane part of the fandom. The insane fans just give the whole fandom a bad name.

definetaly...
OMG! yesterday morning, apparently my mom only JUST found out that i hated twilight... though ive been hating it since november*shudders* and she seemed really upset... i dont really understand y... i mean, we went and saw the movie 2gether, and all. but she hasnt even READ the books...

strange, she seems to have had a huge problem with our warcraft obsession a couple months back, yet she is surrounded by twinerds all the times, and isnt upset...

I agree completely. I'm a Potter fan myself. The worst I've ever done was buy a Gryffindor t-shirt, and dress up in a cloak for the last two book parties (which were costume parties anyway). That's as bad as it gets for me, end of story. I also think it's interesting that fans of Potter love the books, not necessarily Daniel Radcliffe. You hardly ever see a girl with a Radcliffe t-shirt, bag, necklace, etc. Hermione is also a much better role model for girls than Bella. I often wonder...if Robert Pattinson weren't the one playing Edward, would the franchise be this popular? Without him, I don't think it could stand on it's own two feet.

Jenads85 | 52 comments I wonder what would happen if RP dropped from the movies, and they had to replace him...thoughts anyone?

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

...lol...

have alan rickman replace rp... lol... id like to see wat would happen to the movies then... -.-*

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

thats the point!

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

very...

message 25: by Melyssa (new)

Melyssa | 52 comments That's what is so funny though. At first the fanbase was ready to murder because they didn't want RPattz for Edward. He wasn't "hot" enough. Then they settled, realizing they weren't getting anyone better.

I personally don't think RP did all that great of a job as Edward.
I do feel bad for him though. He'll always be known as Edward. He's branded for life.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

o well, he was the idiot who chose to play his part, so its his loss.

Melyssa | 52 comments Aline wrote: Yeah...unlike Twilight, Harry Potter fans don't try to cast spells or anything...

I also ABSOLUTELY DESPISE when a book is criticized by being compared to other books. I am an HP fan, and I HATE when Harry Potter is compared to LOTR ("Rowling tries to make it like LOTR, but LOTR is SO much better!""Harry Potter is a rip-off of LOTR!").

I've never heard of HP compared to LOTR. Huh.

Well, with Potter fans and Twitlight fans, doing things to a sane degree is fine. My kids love to play Harry Potter and they used pencils, sticks whatever they can find and will pretend and shoot spells at one another. Fine. No harm done. A little imagination never hurts anyone. But for someone to sit and try to brew a potion like Polyjuice and thinks it's actually going to work and instead it blows up their house.....yeah...then I'd say cut back on the Potter love a bit.

Same for Twilight. It makes a girl dream that one day they'll find a man that is caring and sweet and gentlemanly as Edward (if that's what they see in him). Fine. Nothing wrong there. Girls waiting for Edward to stalk them through their bedroom window and say things like 'Edward can bruise my body anytime'.....and actually believe he's going to come through their bedroom window. Yeah....lay off the Twilight forever!

IMO, it is very insulting to JK Rowling to have her books compared to SMeyer's crap-fest. JKR spent over a decade putting out her series, it was well thought out, and she did research along with a bit of her own uniqueness and plenty of hard work.
Meyer....she slaps some fluff together sends it out to 14 or 15 publishers, gets one bite and has it published in less than 6 months. There's obviously no real effort put into her writing, no research...and no editing either. Most readers would think that Renesmee is a unique creation of SMeyers. Wrong. Renesmee is a DHAMPIR!! Child of a vampire father, human mother. But you would never know that because the way Meyer writes it, it's made to seem she created it.
I don't like when books are compared the way people compare Twilight to HP. They make it seem like a war and there can only be one winner. Books will always be compared. But the way it's done with Twitlight and HP is ridiculous. It makes you feel like you've got to jump in and defend.

message 38: by Jenads85 (new)

Jenads85 | 52 comments Teen and adult HP fans (like myself) understand that HP is all fantasy. You don't see us jumping off buildings on brooms thinking we can fly or defending ourselves against an armed robber with a toy wand. That would be taking the book too far. Die hard TL fans are taking the book too far by letting it dictate their expectations regarding love. It may not be the equivalent of jumping off a building, but sooner or later it will get you hurt.

message 39: by Erin (new)

Erin how r they taking it to far they arent jumping in front of cars r they? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

... same thing kinda goes for teen warcraft fans(me)... i mean, sure we might go have a couple of fake sword fights (w/ sticks, might i add), but we normally stay glued to the pc screen and dont bother anyone, not doing stupid stuff like going out and buying real battle axes and slicing at random ppl... really ive been obsessed w/ quite a few things, and ive seen quite a few ppl who obsess over thins, but so far, twi-fans r the worst ive seen...

message 41: by Jenads85 (new)

Jenads85 | 52 comments Erin, in response to your question (see the last two sentences of my previous comment), die hard TL fans are hurting themselves in the long run by forming unrealistic expectations about love and lovers. I don't know how many of you have suffered genuine heart break due to unmet expectations, but believe me, it's a sensation to be avoided. When you take something negative from any book, movie, tv show, etc., see it as positive, and incorporate it into your feelings, actions, and subconscious thoughts...well, I just don't see how you can avoid being affected by it in a bad way.

That's just the point. There are lots of men out there better than Edward. It sounds like you're basically settling for your crush, because you can't have the man you really want. You're kind of making it sound like you'd take Edward in a second if he were real, but because he's not you're making due with you crush. Wow...don't ever tell your crush that...no one likes to play second fiddle, not even to a fictional character.
