ABANDONED. A long time ago I read the 1st chapter of a book about winged people, but I never got the title, maybe you do?

My description may be off, I found this book years ago (2006-2007) I believe it's a young adult fiction book.
So the book focuses around a kingdom of (possibly winged) people, and there is this guy who has recently become a bodyguard of the princess (Who i am sure he was in love with, from what i remember reading). The boy is apparently from a different area that the kingdom doesn't exactly like (I don't remember why but I remember reading the word exiled) but he and his parents earned the respect and trust of the kingdom.
(Now this is the last thing I remember reading in the book before putting it down and going home)
The boy goes home to sleep but gets waken up by someone he knows that is from the (for lack of better word) exiled people, and she asks him for help, and he reluctantly leaves with her.

I say possibly winged because I'm not sure if my mind is melding two books i read that day. I do think I remember reading about how his wings (and his parent's) are different from all the others though.
I read this either my eight grade or freshman year in my neighborhood library, but then I realized I was running late and decided to go home without writing down or texting myself the title, for too long I've gone wondering what this book is and I've finally decided to ask the good people
of the internet.
I am SURE that this book is not the first in the series, maybe the second or third, but I just need a series name, or the author. Whatever ideas or titles that come to mind can help and would be GREATLY
appreciated.

Ally--do you remember anything about the book cover? What about any names for the characters? Where did you go to school? U.S., Canada, U.K.? Did it strike you as having a vaguely Harry Potter vibe? Was there any other PN element besides the wings? Do you remember about where in the alphabet you found this?

Any way you could check back with the library? Maybe they still either have it or can check your list of books.

Hawksong first published in 2004 It is a series, the first book is the best IMO, one of my favs

Possibly one of the novels in Sharon Shinn's Samaria series? That's the first one I think of with winged people.

I was also thinking one from the Hawksong series, Falcondance in particular might be the one your looking for.
