Kaila (cephalopod) | 5 comments I bought an advanced reading copy (ARCs) at a library sale. I looked, and there are no ARC editions for this book, nor is there an option for one when adding an edition. It has a unique ISBN, so I can't lump it in with other paperback editions. Should I list it as a paperback and note that it's an ARC? It has a very different cover than all the "official" published versions.

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 259 comments I don't think GoodReads lists ARCs and it's not legal to sell ARCs. Since they are uncorrected proofs, they can't be bought and sold like normal books. You might want to take it back to your library and tell them.

Actually, especially if it has a different ISBN or cover, ARCs are permitted to be added to Goodreads as a new edition. A notation would be put in the edition field called "ARC".

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 259 comments Really? I own lots of ARCs, but have never seen ARC editions listed on GoodReads. I figured since they weren't official, they weren't allowed.

That would be cool, though, since it's sometimes frustrating to have different page numbers when keeping track of your progress. Still, it's something to look into that the library was selling ARCs when all ARCs gererally say, "NOT FOR SALE" or "NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION TO THE PUBLIC".

This one looked like it was something someone donated to the library and they put it in their ongoing book sale section. I don't think they really check the books people donate.

Debbie's Spurts (D.A.) | 6325 comments Members reading ARCs are likely to want to add their ARC edition to bookshelves and to review that edition so goodreads allows. I suspect a lot of ARCs show same isbn as forthcoming publication or else ARC readers just review an ediitin that doens't match theirs. I don't think goodreads has ever prevented or ruled against ARC editions; but, rather data feeds don't include or members aren't adding (possibly just don't know can add ARC as a separate edition; don't understand that review shows on all editions so wait for the published book, or I know some members that mistakenly think a book needs an isbn to be added to goodreads.)

Plethora (bookworm_r) | 359 comments Plenty of ARC's exist in the GR database. When you win a giveway on GR they want you to add the book to a "first reads" shelf.

I would enter it as paperback and then under edition I guess note ARC copy.

The ARC I have in front of me does have a note on the front "ADVANCE READER'S EDITION, NOT FOR SALE, ON SALE 06.4.13" but it has the same ISBN as the book released.

Eh, you'd be surprised at how many libraries sell ARCs. Sure it's not exactly legal, but....

As for ARCs on Goodreads, there are quite a few of them around. I, myself, have a few shelved. =

Lobstergirl The used bookstore near me sells ARCs all the time. I've never heard that it's illegal.

Here's a forum discussing just that issue...
