have you read Graceling; Fire and Bitterblue? they are fantasy - but the characters seem to be fairly bad ass

or Robin LaFevers Assassin Nuns - the first book is Grave Mercy - this is more historical with some fantasy

This is just one single book, not a series, but how about " the Ghost of Crutch field hall" It's about a girl who slipped off the roof and died, now on the afterlife, she is trying to get her younger sick brother to do the same. and a cousin( who looks exactly like the boys sister.) is trying to save the ghost girls brother I loved this book. I haven't read it since i was about 10. ( I'm 13)
