The Third Silence

Does anyone else think the Third Silence is a weapon/technique Kvothe created for fighting powerful Namers or Shapers?

It is interesting that the Third Silence is always described as his. He possesses it in some way. I always thought it seemed an interesting way to describe a silence. It feels like it's hinting at something. I see what you mean.

Okay, I don't know if it was you or not, but over on the kkc.boards.net forums, someone brought this up and I was stoked out about it.

Never considered it until last week.
But I can see the possibility there, almost every fantasy gaming setting offers Silence as a magical spell. But I did struggle with the point that Chronicler does use the Name of Iron in The Waystone effectively binding Bast.

I'll have to see if whoever came up with that theory on the other boards figured out a way around that one, because I would love for this theory to work.

I read a theory on this forum awhile back that when the 3rd book starts the Silence will be broken. Or there will be an awakening or something along those lines. It would be a cool way to start the book, and it would continue from where the WMF left off, "one perfect step." Food for thought

Amber brought up a good point that Chronicler did indeed invoke the name of Iron on Bast. But I do recall that Bast did say that it wasn't really all that effective.

If the 3rd Silence is truly his, this would be a profoundly strong skill to have. It would basically leave all Namers without their power.

Or another route that I think some have questioned, guessed, or hoped that Kvothe was one of the Chandrian, maybe Silence is his sign. But I wouldn't put much stock in that, it just doesn't make sense.

Thats a fair point Billy! Bast is able to move and was going to attack Chronicler so, it wasn't necessarily the best binding.

Outside of that, there could always be a spell DC. Obviously a writer isn't going to address something like that outright, but considering Pat has already been at work to make this story into a campaign setting, it's something he definitely has had to consider. If you make a spell DC really high, it doesn't mean that it can't be counteracted, it just means it's going to be really difficult.



But that mention of Silence being his sign is interesting, maybe whatever voodoo Selitos worked on the Chandrian to curse them, has been worked on Kvothe as well.

Chronicler did invoke iron, but was the third silence invoked? I don't think that the third silence is something in place at all times.
It might even be an extension of wind mastery, being that sound travels through the air.

Iron wasn't effective on Bast 'cause it was a dumb idea. It was uncomfortable, even painful, but not incapacitating. Kote implies that's the normal state of things and Bast sort of reifies that at the end of NW when he lectures Chronicler while holding his wheel.

We've seen, like, four kinds of magic operate in the Waystone at different times and performed by different people. If the silence is anything, it doesn't seem to be built into the inn. It'd have to be something active, as Falanasi suggests.

Perhaps silence is the ring that can't be seen, indicating he has mastery over it. It would make sense, given even his sword is named after the break in speech, not words themselves. And in Ademre, he learns that much can be said with silence.

Silence is something that “gathers around” Kvothe. It was mentioned a few times, from both chronicler and Bast. I think with Chronicler it was described as a blanket settling over the Inn. With bast he was counting “it” off as “it” became deeper still-er. It was something Bast was learning to fear like the time he fell from the tree. This is sloppy by the standards of this group. But I don’t have the books in hand to reference. The silence is mentioned too frequently and in such a way that I believe it is… something significant. I believe I articulated this better in another thread here some time ago. Or maybe I just intended to. ::shrugs::

Well, there is a very "me" vibe to your comment. The point of this "sloppy" discussion, is for us new folks to talk about ideas that are bubbling about in our heads and maybe get some friendly feedback.
If you are much too "articulate" for us little folk, by all means feel free to stay where the air is better.
And yes we believe it is something significant also.

Erm, what? I'm saying, I'm not articulating this very well in this thread, right here. That months and months agoooo in a thread far from here; the subject of the silence was brought up. I had the books in hand at the time and laid out specific details. As to why I thought the silence was important, or at least plays a part in whatever is going to happen in book three.

To recap for the sensitive; I think MY post is sloppy. And not up to the standards I have come to expect in this group.
