The Runaways by Brian K Vaughan & Adrian Alphona (August Read)

So wish that Joss had made it into a movie.

If you wanted to pull it apart, it's pretty stereotypical, both in the group of characters and in the teens against the world sort of thing, but this isn't English class.
Runaways was a very nice read...thanks for suggesting it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I'm desperate to get volume 2. I really wish I had found this as a teen so I could have been a comic convert a lot sooner.

I totally agree! This really warmed me up to reading other series!

Ha. This was actually my major criticism as well. I feel that it should take a lot more than one incident to be totally convinced that your parents are evil and need to be destroyed. I would have also liked to see more evil deeds from the Pride. What were they doing that was soooo evil, it would turn child against parent? Argh. I know I'm thinking too much about the story but it bothered me that this wasn't developed a little more. It's still a good read!

In the 6 or so years since I first read through Runaways, I've become a much bigger fan of BKV and this re-read confirmed why I love his writing.
I'll continue to recommend this series to my grown-up friends as well as their kids, but this time I started making a list of all the dated pop culture references that I imagine will only be immediately understood by people in my age group, i.e., folks born in the early '80s. Even my extremely well-read partner, who is 24, wasn't familiar with several of the references made early on in the series. ([David] Shapiro and the Menendez brothers were some of the first ones I wrote down, which I only knew because I was somewhat aware of major national news stories in the early '90s.) I know Runaways started around 2003 but am I the only one who thinks Vaughan made far too many quickly-outdated references for what is supposed to be a young-adult and teen-friendly series? After the first handful of notes I made, I just gave up because every couple of pages there would be yet another pop reference from the late '80s and early '90s.
Overall, I still think BKV presented the diversity within this young cast of characters in an above-average manner.

LOL about the velociraptor AND Chase.

Emma, was Joss Whedon considering making a movie of The Runaways? Was he involved with the comics in any way?
Does anyone remember that anti-runaways campaign from the 90s and the associated Soul Asylum video? I can't see the word "runaway" without thinking of that and/or the Joan Jett/Cherie Currie band.
I have to admit those Missing kid posters always make me pause.
