How would the story have prevailed if Lena's future husband was Alex or Jullian (somehow)? Or someone she finds awesome?
I suspect that "prevailed" probably isn't really the word you want, but let's see....
If Lena had been matched to Alex, I think the story would still probably have played out mostly the way it did, since Alex was an uncured posing as a cured, and he'd still want to save Lena from being cured. Unless he got her cure faked, in which case they might try to take down the system while posing as an ordinary "cured" couple.
Julian--it depends on whether Lena would still meet and be "infected" by Alex. If so, then I think the story would still have happened much as it did. If not, and Lena found herself drawn to Julian, then she'd probably have gone ahead with the cure, and so would he. Then he'd die, since the doctors warned that the cure was nearly guaranteed to kill him. If the cure had worked in Lena, she'd move on with little trouble, since she wouldn't feel strong feelings for him one way or another. And the story wouldn't happen.
