ABANDONED. Book about a boy and a girl who try and save an albino dolphin?

Book from i believe the 1990's-2000's about I believe a girl and a boy and an albino dolphin. Maybe the girl and boy meet each other during the summer and somehow end up trying to save this dolphin? or shes studying marine biology or something... im not sure if thats two stories im mixing up. All I remember was being about 10, and I cried in the end because I believe the dolphin died or left? That's about all I can remember, but I've been searching and searching for this book and no matter what I type into google, it doesn't give me anything to go off of. And it's not "White Dolphin" by Gill Lewis. I want to say I remember a starfish on the cover, but that's also not certain. Please someone help me remember!

It's probably not it, but all I can think of is A Ring of Endless Light by Madeleine L'Engle.

There was a girl and boy main characters, but I don't remember an albino dolphin. I read it a long time ago though.

There's a part in Prince of Tides where the main character and his brother and sister save an albino dolphin from Sea World, but that's maybe a long-shot :)
