The Map of Time

Help with references from The Map of Time

I started reading the Map of time. I am about 120 pages in to the book. I feel as though a lot of the important set up work that is happening now is going over my head. I haven't read any of the old "sci-fi" books that the author appears to be referring too. Can someone help me out here and let me know what books he references? I'd like to look them up to get a synopsis before continuing on. At this point in the book, I feel utterly lost.
Thank you

there are a lot of references to the Time Machine. I feel like that's the biggest one, although he does do some name dropping as the book goes on. If you read the next book, Map of the Sky it still references Time Machine. It's a quick read, and cannon to science fiction, but I don't think necessary to enjoy the books. You can cliff-notes it. Hope you're liking the book! -L
