Should I read the Outlander series?

Millie Crawford I went about halfway through the series and quit. First the sex between Jamie got just a little too silly, it was in every book and came across as gratuitous. Also, those books needed to be edited to about 75% of their length. It got to be boring. Frankly the only reason I could see to go through the series was to find out what ultimately happened to Claire and Jamie when they got old and I couldn't see dragging through more tomes to find out.

He does not rape anybody at all.You really need to read the book before you get wrong ideas otherwise the story loses its magic.

Agreed! I always feel so sad when I get to the last 100 pages !

I so agree. Davina Porter is excellent and makes the story come alive!

Beth I did not like Outlander. I'm no prude but as gertt mentioned, the sex got to be a bit much (In the bed, in the woods, on the rocks, in the water, and so on). In the beginning it was interesting to see their relationship evolving but after awhile I had to roll my eyes when I sensed yet another graphic "encounter" approaching. Also, some of the sex and violence was gratuitous and extreme to the point where I just couldn't take the book seriously. One person's opinion here. I have friends who loved it. I am pretty sure there are a lot of others who did not. It's that kind of series.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and Outlander isn't for everyone. I am just curious if you only read Outlander or if you read any of the other books. I think that Outlander by far has the most sex in it because the relationship between Jamie and Claire is new and blossoming. In my opinion it lessens throughout the series. Still there, but not as often. I don't know if this will make you want to try the later books but just wanted to share. I have seen many posts from people who are fans of the series but have the same dislikes as you have expressed.

If you are interested in the story-telling but wish for less sex, and gratuity you may find that the Lord John series by Gabaldon better suits you.

I hope that whatever you read, you enjoy it. I think all of us on Goodreads can agree that finding that perfect book/series that just speaks to you is the best thing.

Beth Sorry...my mistake

message 59: by Beth (new) - rated it 2 stars

Beth Thanks for suggesting Lord John. I will definitely take a look. I didn't realize she had written other series.

Jess ✨ℬℴℴк ∞❤∞ ℒℴvℯr✨ Beth - it is more a spin-off from Outlander. The title character is first seen in Voyager but the series is firmly about Lord John and his life outside what we see of him in the Outlander series. I hope you enjoy!

message 61: by Lesa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lesa This is a must read series....SO good. My favorite books. Re-read them all the time. All the characters are so well written - the story amazing - the history interesting. The love story unforgettable. The family connections... it's just an incredible series.

ღ.Shilan.ღ I've only read the first book and I wish I could unread it somehow ... so that's a big fat NO.

message 63: by Natalia (new) - added it

Natalia I'm only reading the 1st book, Outlander, and I have a question about this series.
Do Claire and Jamie grow older as the series progresses? It is probably a stupid thing to ask, but since those books do have some fantasy element in them, I figured nothing is impossible. How old are they by the beginning of book 8?

message 64: by Dee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dee yes they get older as the series progresses, in the most recent one (Echo in the Bone), I think they are like early 60's...

Raine I am a total Oulander freak! It took me a while after the first book, years actually, before I read the second. After that book, still my favorite BTW, I was totally and completely hooked. The love between Jamie and Claire is truly timeless and every time I re-read the series, I find something wonderful and new that I didn't see before.

message 66: by Deidre (new) - added it

Deidre You should def read the first three books, after that it gets REALLY cumbersome.

I will say that Voyager was my favorite of all the Outlander books, even more than Outlander itself. However, I have loved and enjoyed every one of Diana Gabaldon's books. The later ones are different, mostly because Jamie and Claire are older, but their story is still one that I cannot put down.

Jess ✨ℬℴℴк ∞❤∞ ℒℴvℯr✨ Eileen, I totally agree with you. Though I kind of have Voyager and Outlander tied because Outlander started it all and got us all hooked. :)

message 69: by Natalia (new) - added it

Natalia Okay, thanks for the information. I just asked because I don't think I'm ready yet to see Jamie and Claire growing older and read about children of their children :)
Does Voyager end in a cliffhanger? What I'm really asking, are Claire and Jamie well and together and happy at the end of Voyager? Is it a good place to make a pause in this series until I'm ready for more (which may be a long period).

Jess ✨ℬℴℴк ∞❤∞ ℒℴvℯr✨ Natalia, Yes you could say Voyager has a happy ending except it doesn't end there. There are four novels after that and another one coming out soon.

Also if it helps any the author has promised a happy ending when the series finally ends.

Joana Jessica wrote: "Eileen, I totally agree with you. Though I kind of have Voyager and Outlander tied because Outlander started it all and got us all hooked. :)"

Me too! I also kinda loved The Fiery Cross a lot, even though I've heard a lot of people found it difficult to get through

RedRedtheycallmeRed Outlander, Voyager and A Breath of Snow and Ashes are my favorites of the series.

Echo in the Bone was the first in the series that I didn't love.

I thought the Lord John books were boring as hell.

message 73: by Beth (new) - rated it 2 stars

Beth I am impressed by being able to read and reread a series that contain books of such great volume. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy us my personal best and I loved every minute of it. In general though I hesitate to read books in a series. There are so many books I want to read and I was a late bloomer when it comes to reading for enjoyment.

Millie Crawford I agree Beth . A trilogy is my preference though I have many friends who like a series to be ongoing like a television series and want to stay with characters and a story they like . I am reading Martin's "Game of Thrones" series but don't know how I will hold out through numerous large volumes.

message 75: by Lyn (last edited Aug 15, 2013 11:08AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn Absolutely and without ANY reservation, I highly recommend this series. Diana G. is a truly amazing writer; so much so that she is able to keep her audience captivated and wanting more at the end of each book. You have received many positive comments, I note, so get thee to the library or a book store "tout de suite" (right now). You'll love the read and the ride into time.

The heroine is raped but not by her hero, Jamie. He does give her a few switches once because he felt she put the men of the clan in danger but I believe that was an example of the times that the story takes place. Their idea of discipline was very different than what is common place today. He also vows never to hit her again. The story is a wonderful depiction of the Scottish clans during the 18th century and their fight to restore King James and prince Charles to the throne of Scotland. It is a wonderful love story that transcends time. I have read the first 2 books of the series and have reserved the 3rd. i like the Way the English look at life and the way the books are written.

No no I'm pretty sure that does not happen in the first book atleast.. There is no abuse or rape... I think his name was Jami and he was younger than the heroine and very cute and sweet. It was a long read. Personally I'd suggest.. Redeeming Love
Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers

This book was SO beyond inspirational. I'd recommend everyone to read it, but not if you're like an atheist or whatever cause it's about forgiveness in love, God's love and faith. It was just amazing, this book moved me.

RedRedtheycallmeRed Ramisha,

Well, I'm an atheist and I loved the series. I generally avoid overly religious books, and this one didn't bother me in that respect. There are references to Jamie being Catholic, but Claire seems to practice no religion at all.

claire was 27 in outlander and jamie was 23...the first 2 books take place over a span of about 2 years...which puts her at 29 returning...21 years until Voyager ((view spoiler)) - which makes her 51, then the subsequent books are at least 7-8 years...so late 50's

No no, I was talking about Redeeming Love not the The Outlander series.

Dee Peta wrote: "Wait until it is finished it it the longest saga known to mankind!"

nah the Earth's Child series lasted longer...i think it was close to 30 years between the first and last book...and it was less books (6 vice the 8 at minimum that outlander is going to have)

Jewell L. I don't know about y'all... but Outlander is the longest I have ever read. It took me about a week to get through. And if it weren't for the fact that Diana was a goddess with a typewriter, I would have probably gotten irritated and thrown it to the side.

I am too excited for this premiere of the TV series. Just dying to see Sam Heughan in his full kilting glory and whoever this Claire will be I'm excited to see that too.

Trust me if you take the few weeks or months or whatever out of your life to read this series you will definitely not regret it. I haven't started reading Fiery Cross yet, but that's only because I know I wouldn't be able to stop. So do it DO IT.

Ramisha I don't have the patience to read that long of a series however good it may be.. Just read the first part. I dunno maybe one day... when I'm old =p

Star Fouse I love the Outlander series! I have listened to it over and over (Takes several weeks) if I do it straight through. I usually take a break between books 3 and 4 and listen to something else for a bit. Then I go back and listen to the rest of the series. Im not a Diana Gabaldon addict.. really im not. Seriously, I bet I can stop at any time...

When is the next book coming out again?

The first book in the series, Outlander, is being made into a mini-series/tv show on Starz in the US and Showcase in CA. Sam Heughan has been cast as Jamie Fraser and Tobias Menzies as Frank Randall/Black Jack Randall

Starz the TV network has taken the first book into their loving bosom. So sometime next year (July I think) The TV Series will be airing on Starz. They cast Sam Heughan (perfection) as Jamie Fraser and Tobias Mendez as Black Jack Randall/Frank. Sadly they haven't mentioned anything about a Claire yet.
