NocturnalRose | 5 comments I remember a story about brothers in a forest who did something to a tree and then one at a time they went into the forest when one died the tree would bleed.

Another story contained a woman who would lie a lot but would insist she was being honest by saying "let the world open up and swallow me whole if I'm lying" or something very similar to that.

The story that really stuck with me was about a girl who was dying and wished to live as long as the flowers outside her widow her mother or some female caregiver was horrified because she was afraid some kind of like goblin or evil fairy things would hear her they did without the females knowledge and the next day she was healthy eventually she meets a guy they fall in love and he gives her a crown of flowers she is scared and without explaining anything to him she runs back to her home where she finds her had picked the flowers outside her window and the next morning when found she is as dry and lifeless as the flowers she still clutches in her hand.

I hope that's enough to go on I've been searching for this collection of short story fairy tails for over a decade I also remember the book having illustrations

*update*
thank you very much all who have replied so far I neglected to mention that the woman who let me read this book was at least 50 years old and commented that the book was extremely old i think it maye have been older than here I really hope this helps

Kate I have not read all the stories in this book but maybe it's what you're looking for. If not it seems very similar to what you wrote so if you want try it out anyway. I found it interesting and well written, and I've been told my sense of humor is strange, funny at times. Celtic Fairy Tales

Lariethia--most of the "old" fairy tales WERE dark and morbid. It's only been recently (Like the last 10 or so years) that they have been cleaning them up and making them more PC. For example, in Hans Christian Andersen's story The Little Mermaid--at the end of the story the prince marries another girl and the mermaid dies. NOT what you see in the Disney cartoon or read in any of the books based on that cartoon. And all of the rest of the stories, in their original form are like that. Fairies are at best pranksters and at worst truly evil.

So you might have just had a book with the original fairy tales in them. Try looking at fairy tale books that are older than 1980 or so.

Thank you and I know about the fairy tales being more scary back then ever since that book I've become obsessed with the genre if that's what to call it I believe the reason they were so scary was to help teach children lessons or something like that at least I know for sure I came across something saying just that. Thank you very much for the date to at least try and find it.

Merrilee (jrsygrl626) | 189 comments "Fairy tales" were originally written for adults. The were told at court and were meant to be morbid because back the morbid was the "cool" thing. My favorite is "Snow White" where at the end they make the evil queen dance in hot iron shoes til she drops down dead. Then there's "king of the golden mountain" where the main character uses a magic sword to chop everyone's heads off because his wife left him and was planning on marrying another.

Kate You may want to check and see about a Brothers Grimm omnibus of fairy tales as well. I actually like their take on the classics better. They have a book version but the one I have is a graphic novel. The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales

Wander | 20 comments Surprising stories by Saki? I seem to remember something about a sick girl thinking she'd only last as long as the leaves hanging onto the plants growing outside her window.

I think the first story is "The Two Brothers" which is a Grimm's story. They might all be Grimms', honestly. Here's a link to "The Two Brothers": http://classiclit.about.com/library/bl-etexts/grimm/bl-grimm-2brothers.htm

Laina (lshockley) | 196 comments Hi Lariethia, I agree with the others here that you probably remember reading traditional not-touched-up fairy tales.

Try looking at Andrew Lang's colored Fairy Books, published late 1800s to early 1900s. Each volume is a collection of different fairy and folk tales from multiple traditional sources - whether author (Grimm, Perrault), work (Arabian Nights) or national folk oral tradition (Russian, Norse, etc.)

The volumes I have read do have black and white pencil illustrations.

Good luck!
