"The Bank of England announced Wednesday that author Jane Austen will replace Charles Darwin on the country’s £10 note by 2017. The new note will feature a portrait of Ms. Austen as well as a passage from her novel Pride and Prejudice: “I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading!”"

And Ireland has a short story on a stamp.

What are we going to do, America, huh?

Gerald Miller | 821 comments Authors have been placed on stamps for years. Up until a couple of years ago the USPS had strict rules for stamps, dead and American. Now anyone and any subject can get on stamps.Even non Americans can get onto stamps. As for American bank notes I can assume the cost might be prohibitive for constant changing of the portraits or symbols on them.Just a guess.

Why would it be cost prohibitive for the US to change portraits on bank notes but not for other countries?

Gerald Miller | 821 comments Anne first we don't have a tradition of changing portraits on bank notes period in fact we rarely changed the less expensive coins until recently. That is probably the number one reason. As for expense we probably produce 10x the number of bank notes than most countries. Again I am just guessing.

Gerald Miller | 821 comments Just want to point out that the US MINT does produce many uncirculated coins for collectors but only coins.

message 11: by Gerald (new)

Gerald Miller | 821 comments Sorry to see that but I read a little that some women in Briton were upset with so few women on these notes and that other women besides Austin should have been selected but I might be wrong .

message 12: by Esther (new)

Esther (estame) No, Gerald, women in Britain were not upset about this. The article that Toni posted tells you the full story.
