Fran Parker (mypassionisbooks) | 21 comments I don't have a lot sadly. It is a story about a genius mathematician who is out for a walk and finds a man on the ground barely alive. He takes him home and deduces what has happened to him by various clues on his clothing and in his pockets.

He then gives the man a concoction that will take care of the poisoning? and in time the man awakes with questions.

The genius mathematician then goes through the story as he deduced it and the man who had almost died is amazed at how the man was able to deduce all of this without the man being able to tell him anything.

The story has the flavor of the time of Sherlock Holmes, but it was not Sherlock Holmes.

Thanks for any help! Sure is frustrating not to remember a story you read.

Ok, I haven't read the anthology myself, but what about one of the stories in A Study in Sherlock: Stories inspired by the Holmes canon?

Was there any paranormal angle to the story? There is a paranormal series that leans heavily on the Holmes stories. Only Watson is female and a wizard--and more than competent--and Holmes is a mentat, a human calculating machine type character.
Lilith Saintcrow is the author. I'm not sure if there are any short stories with this series tho, as it is fairly new.

No paranormal elements in the story, just alchemy.

It's a good series Fran. It's called Bannon and Clare. The Iron Wyrm Affair is the first book in the series.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Fran, did you read this story in an anthology or collection of short stories? And, how long ago did you read it?

Fran Parker (mypassionisbooks) | 21 comments I read it last year and it could have been in a collection of short stories, but I can't be sure.

I believe it is also in The Thinking Machine.

Fran Parker (mypassionisbooks) | 21 comments I really don't remember it from the Time Machine, but I will keep that in mind during my next reading of Time Machine.

Thanks!

I was excited to finally figure it out. It figured it out partly on the way home, then made myself a note on the word I remembered through the bout of free word association and when I got home I did a few searches and found it.

Fran Parker (mypassionisbooks) | 21 comments Thanks Cheryl! Will have to check it out.

The mind is an amazing thing. That word association really helped. My mind was totally blank on it before that.
