Maybe I'm just lazy but I seem to be reading lots of old horror at the minute, Ramsey Campbell, Lovecraft, Barker, etc... and I'm struggling to find modern writers who live up to what I term classics. Any suggestions for new authors who hit the spot?

For modern indie authors try David Haynes (The Macabre Collection) and Kit Tinsley (Dark County).I'd suggest myself as well, but that would be cheeky :-)

There seem to be far too many books out there that I'm mentally placing in a "chewing gum for the eyes" kind of category; not awful, but not truly grabbing me, either. I'd actually been thinking about starting a similar thread elsewhere. But this'll do. :]
In fact in the past year I can think of only ONE recent horror novel that had the ol' pupils dilating: Undead on Arrival, by Justin Robinson.
The problem with this one (aside from that annoying title) is that it ain't for everyone. It is a very gritty zombie splatter-fest with a noir type mystery tossed in. Lots of strong sexual content as well, and a protagonist who is more than a bit of a d-bag. And I don't mean doggie.
