I finished my book for this challenge A Fortunate Life. It was okay but not as good as I had been led to expect. I felt that it was a very challenging life but it was not really a fortunate one.

Chris | 240 comments I have completed my first challenge. I have just finished A Fortunate Life. I agree with Phrynne in it not being as good as I was expecting. Still enjoyed though. My read The Magic Pudding now.

I love The Midwich Cuckoos. There's a really old film of it where all the children had white blonde hair and big eyes and looked alike - spooky!

message 183: by Amber (new)

Amber (ukaunz) It doesn't look like I'm going to get The Rosie Project from the library this month, but I did manage to read The Magic Pudding. I gave it ★★★

The Happy Prince and Other Stories is waiting for me at the library, so I'll be able to fit that one in too. It was reviewed on 01/11/2011.

Yes, there's a few versions around - but not one of them is as good as the books - same with Day of the Triffids!

Best book club book for me this year! So funny and I hate to say it but I do know a couple of people who are in the same sphere as Don!

Ben (bennewton_1) I finally finished off Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West today and gave it 5 stars. It was really quite a staggering book. However, I don't think I would ever want to pick it up again and probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone either. It is one of, possibly the most challenging book I have ever read.

Thanks Brenda, it definitely felt like an achievement when I got to the end.

message 189: by Kadi (new)

Kadi (kads) | 99 comments So I did it! I read Gone Tomorrow which I liked. I don't think I have read Lee Child before so might go and have a look at the other books.
The other was Sharp Objects which I really liked. I read it in 2 days which is very quick for me. I thought I had worked out the killer but I was wrong. It was a good read.

I am pretty easygoing with books. I generally like everything I read though, unless its really slow and I can't finish it, which is rare. Now on to September!

For 5 stars it must be good in a way. Its on the best books ever list I saw. I'm not sure I could read it though

Absolutely Kadi, it was an incredible book. The language in particular was astounding, so evocative. There's a lot of metaphor and subtext as well which I'm sure a lot just went right over my head. Tonally it was very heavy though, and very challenging to read. I don't necessarily mean that as a bad thing, but I wouldn't recommend it to others unless I am pretty sure that they would be up for it. It's very demanding of the reader, if that makes any sense?
