I've noticed lately that participation in the Book of the Month program has been decreasing. So I want to make some changes to encourage more people to partake in it each month.

I'm posting links to a couple of polls to get your feedback. Please take a minute to tell me what you think.

Also, if you have any suggestions please list them below.

Poll #2: Should we do a series read along every month? (Where we pick a series and each month read the next book in the sequence until it's finished)

Maria Schneider (bearmountainbooks) I think it's just summer. All my groups have less people on through August. Once the rush to school starts back up, people start getting back online. Maybe doing less bookreads in the summer to accommodate the schedules would work better?

I am active on about 4 GR threads and all but one has a botm and I can't read them all!

Faith (faleoh) | 1 comments I am on several groups, but my son doesn't let me use my kindle most of the day so I don't get very far.

Jenny | 4 comments I love the idea of the book of the month but sometime the book something that I have already read or something that I'm not interested in but that is the chance that you take. And sometimes I just don't have the time to read along that month. I would love to do it more often and I always try and vote but it just doesn't work out.

I checked out Fever series but it wasn't for me.

One of my other groups has a "Buddy read" thread. It's sort of like book of the month, but it seems to work Any two people can do the buddy read. It's in addition to the BOTM (only one BOTM there.) A lot of times if the book of the month isn't the one selected that a couple of people want to read, they do a buddy read instead. You can usually tell by the votes if there is enough interest in a book to start a buddy read!

Mark Henwick | 8 comments I like the book of the month idea, but it's really hard to keep up sometimes!

The fever series is one of my favorites =)

message 13: by Nikki (new)

Nikki (withererose) My only issue in reading them is availability at the library as much as i'd like to buy every book I just can't and if they don't have it at the library then I cant read it (as what happened last month) and also picking a book of the month for say august that was just released august makes it very hard to get from the library hence why I didn't read game board of the gods (yet it just finally came to my turn last week). Thats my only issue with keeping up or reading.

Heather (fun-sizelibrarian) I agree that a lot of it is just summer. People are just busier right now. Having lots of beach reads is a nice idea, but I haven't even had time for a beach trip!

Me either on the beach...

Oleander | 39 comments I agree with other comments that people tend to read more in the winter when they are inside. Summer activities take away from reading and computer time for many. The long lazy days at the beach/lake are more of a myth than a reality in my experience. *sigh*
I am more likely to participate in BOM when the book has been out awhile and I may already own it or it is available at the library. I am not going to go buy a new release. However, if it is a recent freebie, then that's a good choice too.

Jessica | 84 comments I find that its hard for only the first book simply because there are so many series that I need to catch up on. I find I like the two books cause I can pick or choose what I am going to read. I have no intentions or reading YA books... It kinda sucks because I have bought books that I would like to read and they get chosen to be book of the month after I have given up waiting for them to be book of the month and read them already.

Maybe more buddy reads for the summer? I am trying a buddy read at the blog. I picked 4 books for the polls and two had the most votes, but honestly it will be willy-nilly discussion of all four if I know my blog. One of the other GR groups is doing buddy reads of some of the books that Didn't win BOTM -- informally start a thread on the book you "choose" from the list and then see who wants to discuss.
