428 years is a standalone sci-fi short story which contains a little over 6700 words.
Doran and his sister Alexis live in a world where life can be extended for hundreds of years. They only have each other, but that is more than enough. The serum that extends life is too expensive for most people, but not for Doran. Someone else pays for his vital treatment. In fact, an entire system has been put in place for people like Doran. His sister is not so lucky, but at least she isn't locked up in prison.

"Doran's mind trailed off a bit. The scent of the flower took him back in time. His sister used to pick him flowers from the broken concrete fields behind their block. The yellow ones with the flower heads that closed at night. They used to carefully escort the flowered ones to the rooftop. His sister loved to see the wind carry the little white parachutes. Doran always assured her that some of the seeds made it across the spiked fence. Maybe one day they would too."
