Doug (alexchel) SPOILERS for those who haven't read the book.

Let me try this again, I screwed up the spoiler tag on my last post and lost all my brilliant thoughts :o/

Thank you too Denisa, I enjoyed the read. My favorite thing about this novel is that I know little more about the case than I knew before I started. Outside of the murders, I don't know what's true and what isn't.

Dick being killed at the end doesn't seem as bad because Capote had spent a good part of the book showing him to be a careless husband who liked young girls, as opposed to Perry who despite his evil thinking was made to be the sympathetic character.

I'm uneasy about a person being killed for being mainly an accomplice. I think the book mentioned that there was no "life without parole" in Kansas so I don't know what options they had but as Dick said in the book "I'm the only guy on death row who isn't a killer". Perry is a little more straight forward but if he was clinically insane, I don't think he should have been killed either.

I also found this information:
Aug. 25, 1984
Truman Capote, author of Breakfast at Tiffany's and In Cold Blood, dies in Los Angeles at age 59. In Cold Bold, Capote's pioneering true-crime novel published in 1965, told the story of the brutal slaying of a Kansas family at the hands of a pair of parolees from Kansas State Penitentiary. Many critics consider the book to be the first "nonfiction novel."
It's strange that you and I read this book in the month he died in 1984... even stranger, they re-opened the Florida case they thought these boys were responsible for. In my strange little mind... I wonder if maybe Dick was the one who actually killed the Cutter family and not Perry. It is stated many times that Perry didn't want Dick to die with his momma thinking Dick had killed anyone... And the book led you to believe that Dick had something over Perry, why else would he succumb to Dick's strange ideas other then they were a matched pair of mean violent people. I also think Perry had mental issues but I'm not so sure he was the killer or at least of all of them... Dick was just down right evil.

Doug (alexchel) That is kind of strange that we basically finished up the book on the date of Capote's death.

I think it's entirely possible Perry didn't commit all of the murders. In my reading of the book, I found Dick to be an aloof type character but there was more going on for Perry to defend him so strongly and even desire that Dick come with him when he had that fantasy of being broken out of jail.

Maybe Perry was a weak willed guy who would have latched on to any strong personality and as Dick referred to him "the loneliest guy" around.

maybe he was indeed a very lonely person. The fact his sister moved away and didn't want him to find her showed his character earlier must have been one to scare her or cause her worry too...Maybe since Dick showed him friendship he grabbed hold of it as... he didn't have any... but he seemed to get a long with the jailer's wife and protected that young Cutter girl... I mean Perry i just couldn't figure out... and he was so gentle and sweet to that squirrel that came to visit him...

You're very welcome, Denisa. The discussion was great. I'm glad my input was appreciated.
